RACE (Challenge Cup Relay) 52:36 [3] 7.5 mi (7:01 / mi) +317ft 6:45 / mi

Not a lot of sleep coming in to this. Zach usually gets up at 0230 and tosses and turns for about 30 minutes before finally going back to sleep. Then he's up for good between 0600 and 0630, or the dogs get up at 0400--0430 to go out.

Rinse, repeat.

Left the house at 1230 or so, LOOONG drive into Palm Desert, before heading up the pass - road closures are seriously wrecking my life right now. Rolled in to Baker at about 5:30 and met the group, rolled out for our stages at about 6.

Typical controlled chaos of a relay race. Made it to my leg with enough time so I wasn't as rushed as previous years. Finishing up my warm up and Dan is coming up the road and yelling that they're waiting for me. Crap.

Last minute light malfunction on the vest and a semi-panicked swap out, but my team mates got it done. Solid.

Took the hand off and planned to run "steady" to the top of the climb at 2.5, not overcook the down hill and shred the quads, then kick it into gear through the flat and climb the last 1.5 miles.

Only Anaheim is right in front, and SAPD comes around after the first mile or so. Game. On.

I sat in until 2.3 in when SAPD slowed up. I knew the top of the climb was at 2.5 and that it was all downhill through mile 6 so I threw in a surge and kept the hammer down over the summit. I could hear their footsteps fade so I knew I had a gap. I throttled back a bit to save some for the last 1.5 miles, but SAPD came back around. I latched on and stayed with him through mile 6, but I the 6:25-6:40 pace was a bit too hot for me and he got away.

Still, that was FUN.

HUGE PR's for me, team wound up 7th in Open and 9th Overall again. We had a couple eff-ups so this was decent for us.

Guys pop in and out through the years, I keep waiting for things to line up and we have that one "Dream Team" that slays it.
