Run (Saddleback Marathon) 4:27:12 [3] 24.62 mi (10:51 / mi) +4460ft 9:16 / mi

This was hard. Shitty weather and last minute RD change - late announcements meant low turnout.

Mid 50's and light rain on and off the whole race. Course change this year had us going DOWN San Juan Trail to the bottom and then back up, with a campground loop/ Falcon Crest Trail tacked on to the end.

Ran controlled to the bottom, wasn't sure if I over-cooked the downhill or not. Tired from shit sleep thanks to the kids being sick AGAIN.

Re-filled nutrition at the bottom. Out and back course meant I knew exactly where I was in the standings; came in 7th but picked up 6th right out of the aid station.

Ran solid up the first set of switch backs, caught 5th right after the second set - he teed me up that 4th wasn't that far and he was done trying to catch.

Caught 4th about 2 miles from Cocktail Rock, made a solid move in a wide spot and he latched on. Put in a HUGE effort for about 5 minutes and he finally cracked.

Topped off one bottle at Cocktail Rock - rain came in pretty decent after that and things stared getting snotty. I had a pretty bad rough patch around mile 18, but knew it was that 3-hour slump and it would pass if I kept moving, eating and drinking. Felt better-ish around mile 20, but the legs were DONE and I was running on will power and the desire to just be done.

Caught 3rd about mile 22 stopped off trail with his hands on his knees - classic 'legs are done' position. Finally topped out San Juan, cruised the pavement stumbled and bumbled Falcon Crest and crossed the line....3rd OA.

Seriously dehydrated and hypothermic - body shaking chills, and barely walking. Got some hot chocolate, back to the car to dry off and get warm.

Blew my expectations completely out of the water.

Taking it easy for about 2 weeks, then starting up for spring races.

Run 1:00:04 [3] 6.44 mi (9:20 / mi) +623ft 8:33 / mi

Aerobic town loop. Waked 5 to warm up, then jogged to the 40 min mark before 8 x 20 second strides at 400m pace (5:40's on flats). Walked 40 secs between for recovery, then jogged home. Legs are "there", but the rest of me feels run down and unmotivated. It's probably because the kids are both sick and we're not sleeping much. I'm getting cold sores, drinking ALL the coffee, and I find myself reaching for zinc and B12 just to keep moving. Break coming after Saddleback and I NEED it.

Run 1:05:51 [3] 7.71 mi (8:32 / mi) +336ft 8:12 / mi

Tempo taper work PT. Walked 5 then jogged 10 to warm up. Then 5 x 7 mins tempo with 2 min recoveries. Jogged, then walked to cool down. Out the bike path, then out Hall Road to the 32-ish minute mark, then flipped it. HR cap 180.

AVG pace: 7:05 slow (7:05.8)

Slower than last week, but maybe snow shoveling trashed my back? Maybe fitness is on the decline after "meh" training since Mt Tam?
