Note
(rest day)

Finished the o festival yesterday ended up coming 34th out of 140 not really what I was looking for ... Would of ended up coming in the top 10 if I continued my form from day 1&2 and even then I felt like I'd lost a lot of time but It was nothing compared to the mistakes on the other days . I guess I've learnt at this level on really difficult areas that not many but the French are used to a clean race will win you the race ... Looking at the splits from the winners there pretty much the same as mine minus the mistakes ... They were hardly getting the fastest split every time Just hitting a top ten fastest ... A lot learnt from this complicated terrain definatley good experience and the week was provided with some good banter from the NW squad that came up and watching the elites . Currently in samoes for another week in frNce gonna try fit in a few runs

Swimming 1:30:00 [3]

Actually tried doing some proper swimming 8 x the width of the lake ( bit of breast stroke front crawl and backstroke) never realised swimming was so hard used to be able to swim a mile when I was 9 ... I think u would die if I Dias that know ... Or do it at slug pace

Orienteering race (O festival stage 6) 43:06 [3] 2.6 km (16:35 / km) +205m 11:53 / km

Hit 1 nice and fast two I missed a safer choice of route choice and went direct, think I missed the control by about 15m just on the otherside of a small hill , I was then searching for about 12 mins ... Lost the race in the first section of the course , something I've been doing a lot of ... Need to work on that and identify which few legs are going to be tricky and slow down or maybe spend a few more seconds on looking on the route choice! Also made a few small mistakes later when Alex McCann caught me , nearly managed to get way from him ... Obv left him on sprint finish though ! Even thoughbi went away with a lit of bad races I've know gained a lot of experience on complex terrain like this . I know that all areas but a few aren't as hard as all the maps except a few in GB . And I will hopefully learn from my mistakes

Orienteering race (O festival stage 5) 43:34 [3] ***** 3.1 km (14:03 / km) +65m 12:43 / km

Not much to say abou this race apart from it was shit ... Messed up 1, lost all confidence and motivation . Ali Thornton caught me up so had a bit of banter around a last few controls lead him to the finish .

Note

Watched gorgoui win again ! Good watching him shame I got a tad if heatstroke and feel pretty shit now !

Orienteering race (O festival stage 4) 1:13:07 [3] ***** 7.0 km (10:27 / km) +205m 9:07 / km

Generally another one of those races with big mistake because of me not getting used to the technicallity ... Today was the long and most of the legs were go off the bearing and hope for the best ... Nearly worked swell it was hard to stay on the bearing for such a long time especially over about a k leg through technical terrain. Although I had a bad race today and made about 20 minutes of mistakes through the 7k I actually enjoyed it and there was some positives I coul take out of it.

Orienteering race (O festival stage 3) 47:47 [3] ***** 2.6 km (18:23 / km) +100m 15:25 / km

Shitest race ever in the hardest map ever ... 1 and 2 were pretty average then 3 drifted off my bearing and was searching forever 8 minute mistake , 4 I took a bearing 180 degrees in the wrong direction and got slightly lost ;) after that did okay by had no motivation apart from a sprint finish ... I guess I should call my first two races good after this mess up I'm definatley dropping it as a race. Only motivation was at the sprint finish where I absolutely kained it , 23 secs ... Better be fastest split ! Run in was half up half down.

Orienteering (O festival stage 2) 55:20 [3] ***** 4.4 km (12:35 / km) +170m 10:32 / km
spiked:14/14c

Terrain relly slow today lots of broken ground mich more technical...was the best brit i think but i dont know how i was .Started of well hitting controls 1-5 pretty well, 6 was my worst mistake with a few more to come (big ones ) I didn't follow my bearing and ended off drifting to the left , it took me 20 seconds to work where I came out I then took a good route choice and I was hesitating alot 40 m before my control and kept going back on myself must of lost 4 or so minutes on this leg , needed be more positive for this leg and trust my technical side which was good up until then!7 I made a minute mistake coming into the wrong depression ... Oh and at 6 I caught up Michael Adams but I thought he caught me because of my poor leg infact he started 3 minutes before me and I caught him ! Me and Michael then raced against each other well both taking slightly different route choices at 9 I fell on a barbed wire fence cut up my legs ! All was fine till the second till last control when I took 7 55 on a 2/3 min leg ! Overall I was technically good on a lot of the legs but on some of the easier legs I messed up real bad mistakes= 12/13 mins! really fustrating when this happens. Got a rest day tomorrow and might go down and watch the woc sprint final in chambery.
3 PM

Note

Came 11th ... Just found out , shows everyone is making mistakes in this complex terrain , I think a clean run is key to getting top 5 , next race is in a differnt area though so it may be technically easier . We'll have to find out !:D

Orienteering race (O festival stage 1) 33:20 [3] **** 3.0 km (11:07 / km) +195m 8:23 / km
spiked:12/12c

First stage of the o festival , in St Francois but on the other side of the road . Not as technical as yesterday yet still very challenging ! Taking a path option when you could was definatley the best choice . Lost so many minutes today , at 1 I lost about 3 minutes because of taking a quite discrete path which I thought was the main one and taking myself into the wrong depressions , Patrick caught me up on 1 but I quickly left him and beat him by 3 minutes . After that costly mistake I really got going and was hitting all my controls well didn't make any more errors till 8 and 9 - at 8 I simply ran past it and to far up the re-entrant until realising lost 1-2 mins and then again at 9 by worst mistake as I caught a French boy and was racing hard against him and let my map reading slip and I made a parallel error as I later realised looking at the map . Result wise it looks okay as I came 15 out of 140 winner got 27 32 or so I reckon I could of done it in 25/26 if I didn't make stupid mistakes ... But I guess I'm still adapting to the terrain, much more runnable today though . This is all good experience :)

Orienteering (O festival training) 1:11:00 [3] ***** 6.4 km (11:06 / km)

Training in st Francois de sales! My first taster of the competitions terrain. The forest is very thick and underfoot it is rocky making the going very slow...the are was unbelievably technical as you got further away from the start . Spiked about twenty controls my made mistakes on a lot of them . But at least they were only 1-3 min errors and when I relocated I did it well :) knew it would be technical , but even more so than it is ! Not taking the competition that serious , it's just a holiday for me and a good experience running in different countries with completely different terrain . Gonna have to go slow tommorow (so will everyone apart from the French ) and if there is an option of a path take it as it will save mistakes and proabably be faster. Saw gorgoui in the qualifiers today , he absolutely tanked it and beat everyone by like 6 minutes and he didn't look like he was tired at the finish . loving the sunny weather here - 30 degreeeeeeees ! Not sure about the kilometres probably less off anything :L
