Running 51:22 intensity: (43:22 @2) + (8:00 @4) 6.2 mi (8:17 / mi)
rhr:45 slept:5.75 weight:161lbs

We put Nate on the plane (well, saw him thru the security checkpoint) a little before lunch, so I didn't have time to run during lunch. He should arrive in Gotenburg late tomorrow AM to begin his orienteering adventure: JWOC, training camp, Fin 5 and O-RIngen over the next four weeks.

I was at work until just past 7, but I was able to exercise some discipline and get out the door. I ran over to the Bayview Y and down the trails to the bay, wandered around a bit more than planned (the trails looked quite different with the summer weeds growing up and out), and popped out onto Empire at Daytona. I did 4 x 1 min quick turnover (162, 172, 168, 165) on the way out and 4 more on the way back (164, 170, 172, 176).

No chance for a run today. Our little valedictorian had to give a speech at graduation, and we had plenty of last minute things to do before heading down there. It was straight from graduation (3 hours long - almost an hour just giving out the diplomas) to Olive Garden for lunch (per Chelsea's request) to a graduation party, leaving me too full to think about running.

Chelsea's speech went quite well, especially considering this is not something she ever does (well, I guess she did give a brief speech at the basketball banquet, which had about 1/40th of the audience - the Eastman Theater was pretty much packed for this). Her friend gave a very nice speech also, including Marv Levy's "where would you rather be that right here, right now" quote.

Running 1:04:32 [2] 8.2 mi (7:52 / mi)
slept:6.0 weight:161.5lbs

Got up early to hit the golf course, but thunderstorms moved in and my effort was thwarted. So, I ended up running over to Irondequoit to catch nephew Johnny's U-8 lacrosse game - his team was up from Corning. Nate gave me a 2:30 head start and made up almost 2 minutes before I got stuck at a light at 590, just over 3 miles in, and we ran most of the rest together. The heat and humidity made it a tough go - we started right at noon.

Johnny looked pretty small out there - I think he is a year younger than many of the kids. His team was more than a match for Fairport in the game I saw (7-0). They also won their other two games easily.

Since we are being moved from City Centre to Xerox Square (in fact, this note is being posted from the 18th floor), I "worked from home" this AM, which meant that I was able to fit in 9 holes with Zach and Luke after taking care of business early. Only moderately better than last night, although I did make a couple of 4-foot putts. Posted a 45 which was primarily the result of sloppiness on 1 and finding the water on 3, for a pair of 7s - responded with 5 straight 4s.

Zach and Luke played well from 200 and 100 yards, respectively. I think Zach was about 57 and Luke was about 63 (he had an 8-stroke limit, which he hit 4 times).

Weight was measured at the Y, after swimming.

The Bayview Y schedule on the web said lap swim until 1:15 on Fridays, so I went there, instead of Monroe, where the pool closes at 1 on weekdays, on the way in to the office. Unfortunately, it appears that in the summer, lap swim ends at 1. So, my workout was curtailed after just 1 of the 200s

GTA, with an excellent turnout - 13 in the main group (including Nate), 3 in the women's aux, plus Howie just missed the start. The main route is here - I tacked on a bit after missing the light at Clinton, and my shortcut attempt backfired. I was suffering due to overeating last night, coupled with an usually quick pace up East Ave - I was about 7 min pace for the 0.9 mi stretch from Culver to Goodman, and the big boys, with Nate along for the ride, were about a minute ahead.

Nice 7am mimosa at the end, to celebrate Vinny and Shannon's upcoming nuptials (this weekend in NYC).

Golfing 18:00 [1] ***
spiked:3/18c

Horrible putting - I thought I was past that - led to an awful 96, finishing up as a seven-some as darkness fell. Our six-some was having to wait on the twosome in front of us.

Played with a Xerox retiree (Bill S) and a jeweler whose shop repaired my Garmin band, neither of whom I had met before, plus Bill R for awhile. We joined Larry L, Steve C and Chris (of no backswing fame) while things were stacked up on 13, then Jason caught us after we waited on 16.

Golfing 9:00 [1]
(rest day)

Work got in the way of a lunchtime run and Chris had bought pizza before Z and I got home, so I had an undisciplined day off.

Dropped Zach off for his Jr Golf clinic and hopped on the course for 9 holes. I put up another 40, which got combined with the 40 on Sunday and was posted as an 80, besting the 81 that I posted for the first 18 on Sunday.

Zach waited near the 7th green after his clinic and played the last 2 holes with us.

Swimming 36:09 [3] 1.0 mi (36:09 / mi)
rhr:36 slept:7.0

HR tied record low this AM - it was a split second from being 35.

The Downtown Y pool was in its annual shutdown mode today, so I drove over to the Monroe Y and its empty 4-lane, 20-yard pool. The lifeguard must get quite bored there.

4:08/8:19 (split is estimated from 14-lap split, instead of actual 12.5 lap split)
1:27,32,31,31,30,32 (on 1:55)
2:46,41,37 (3x160 pim on 3:15)

20-yard pool meant that I could go exactly 1 mile.

Running 27:40 [2] 3.25 mi (8:31 / mi)

Easy run after dropping Zach off for his soccer game at Greece Arcadia. Cut thru the "State Sanctuary" land over to Badgerow, and back (route) almost in time for kickoff.

Exciting game - Z played goal the first half and left with a 2-0 lead. Then he played defense for much of the second half, and the team gave up the tying goal immediately after he left the game. He was inserted at midfield for the last three minutes, and scored the winner - going top shelf after picking the cross out of the air - with less than 30 seconds left in the game.

Golfing 27:00 [1]
spiked:12/27c slept:7.0 (rest day)

Today marks the end of my Rogaine recovery; tomorrow marks the start of training for the Alumni XC Meet on September 6th.

Played 27 holes for the first time in years. Got 18 holes in, shooting 81, which is my lowest score, not counting the 80 I posted when I was conceded 3 makeable-but-not-gimme putts. Got in some trees here and there, but stayed out of major trouble and had just 2 doubles, 8 bogeys, 6 pars and 2 birds.

The boys (all 3 of them) joined me for 9 more holes. Nate and Zach played from 200 yards and Luke played from 100 yards. Luke managed to "drive" the green on the second hole - not bad for never having hit a ball (other than with a putter), except a couple of times in our backyard. Nate can hit the ball pretty hard, but is wildly inconsistent, so Zach beat him by about 7 strokes, but Zach has played quite a bit more.

I managed a 40 from the Blue tees, so it wound up a pretty nice day of golf. The high point was chipping in from about 45 yards for a bird on 7, but that came after the low point which was a 3-putt for a 4 on #5, with the second miss coming from about 2 feet.

Golfing 18:00 [1]
spiked:8/18c slept:7.0 (rest day)

Finally made it out for golf on a Saturday morning. Arrived at the wrong time, though, as there were about 4-5 groups lined up, and all were foursomes, so I had to hit the range for almost 40 minutes before I was retrieved.

Definitely a bi-modal round. I shot 89, which is exactly an average bogey per hole, but I think I only had 3 bogeys: 1 bird, 7 pars, 5 doubles (including 3 in a row to start things off) and 2 ugly triples.

My back was still pretty sore this AM from sneezing yesterday, but some Vitamin I and the swim felt great.

Running 29:42 [2] 3.46 mi (8:35 / mi)

Dropped Zach off at his soccer game on Basket Rd, then ran the tracks to Salt and back to Basket via Boulter plus a loop around the fields to get close to 30 minutes.

Z's team looked pretty flat - I guess much of the team was at a pool party all day (not a good plan) - so, they lost the rematch with the team that beat them in the WSA tournament last weekend (in a shootout that went overtime, after the game went overtime), 3-zip.

Running 2:52 [4] 0.5 mi (5:44 / mi)

Did 8 barefoot strides on the empty soccer field behind Zach's. Felt great.

No time to workout at lunch - had to leave just after 3 for the fall coaches' meeting. So, I didn't get off the first tee until 5:34.

Put up a 43, with too much sloppiness. I achieved consistently overly-hooked tee shots, so I was able to work on a fix and it paid off on 9. I'm hoping that can carry over to my next round.

Mostly took it easy, since I am leaning towards jumping in the trail run tonight. My knees are not 100%, but I think they are good enough to run it for fun.

Running race 34:04 [4] 4.0 mi (8:31 / mi)

Jumped in the Fleet Feet Dirt Cheap Trail Race at Ellison Wetlands. It was really strange going to a running race after all of the orienteering this spring. I guess it was strange for Patty, too. She asked if she was allowed to run down the road where the race started - she thought it might be OB.

I went out conservatively, but not slowly, since I knew the trails would be narrow. I don't think any more than 1 or two people passed me the whole way, while I passed at least 10 on the trails, including 2 in the last stretch when I could see the clearing coming thru the trees - I ended up beating them by 15 and 28 seconds, although I passed them in the last minute or so.

My knees didn't bother me much - I seemed to be limited aerobically as often as physically.

The results are here. Nate smoked me, even though he walked much of the last part of the race. Dan won the whole thing and Patty was the 3rd woman. Walt was on the DL and didn't make the trip after his surgery yesterday.

Knees just sore enough to not run. Right knee problem is on the inside; left knee soreness is in back.

Hit about 65 balls at the range, until the last stag shotgun group came thru, then played the back with Art and Ken the dentist. A little erratic at times, but hit some very good shots. Shot 43, including a double on 11 (rushed and missed 2nd putt) and on 18 (almost missed the tee shot completely, trying for a big hit). Had some good pars - 12 (solid up and down), 14 (outstanding chip after hitting tree on the corner), 15 (longish putt), 17 (huge recovery shot).

Easy swim to help with recovery from the weekend. My knee is quite sore and limited my push-offs and breaststroke kick. I won't mark it as an injury today, but if the ice and vitamin I don't help by tomorrow, I will. That would be a shame since I was hoping to jump in the next Dirt Cheap Trail Run on Wednesday at Ellison.

Orienteering race 5:07:05 [2] *** 15.0 km (20:28 / km)
spiked:7/9c slept:4.5

Got up at 4, but let Nate sleep until 4:30, so we left just after 5. His knee was feeling somewhat better, so we went out, with a plan to keep an eye on the knee. The first control was a bit of a walk on the road, so it was actually light enough to see by the time we cut into the woods, and the headlamps ended up being excess baggage.

We decided to skip a 50-pointer that was going to be a pain to get back to, but added a 30-pointer that was easy enough. Then our problems began. We couldn't find 503 (must have missed it just right, so when we turned right we came up empty). Since we weren't certain of our location leaving the area, we ended up catching the wrong spur to the next, 30-point control. At this time we decided to just grab a 70-pointer and then the 50-pointer on the way in. Nate's knee seemed to hold up OK, but we'll have to see in a few more days. Our second goal was to have fun, and the break made things much more fun, so that was good. Our third goal was to place respectably, and we just missed the top half of the open men's category (haven't seen where we stood overall), so I think that was a success as well.

Route:
504 - 606 - 804 - 303 - missed 503 - missed 312 - 306 -

I gmapped the route that Nate and I took. We did a fair amount more wiggling than this shows, but here it is.

US Rogaine Championships at Allegany State Park (hosted by BFLO/ROC). Nate and I teamed up. The hash house was centrally located enough that we had planned 3 loops: 1 long daylight for Saturday, 1 modest night section and a shorter daylight segment for Sunday. Our first loop was planned for 920 points in just over 8 hours. We were ahead of that pace most of the way, but about halfway thru, I noticed Nate was limping. He said his knee was sore, and shortly after that we had a couple of 5-10 minute errors on controls. We were a ways from home, and it didn't make sense to go all the way back without picking up more points, so we just skipped a 30-pointer and grabbed 701 (after a big climb) on the way in. A long stretch on the road was included, but I didn't want to make Nate do much running, so we walked most of the way, losing a bit of time to our plan (in addition to the 30 points).

Since our number one goal was for Nate to come out of the weekend healthy (with the Sweden/Finland trip just two weeks away), I decided that he should not do the night loop, and we would re-evaluate in the AM.

Route: 604 - 414 - 501 - 705 - 308 - 411 -

Had to extend the Rogaine taper today. My new, additional, responsibility at work required that I meet during lunchtime, since the outsourced development and QC teams couldn't manage to load a file into a database. We couldn't afford another 24-hour delay like we've faced twice (after a week delay just getting started), while the onshore teams handoff the required changes to the offshore team, then have the changes show up the next day. "Follow the sun" is not working so well with our current setup. Anyway, it took about 3 questions, 20 minutes and a call to a DBA and we were in business.

A very strange round of golf - I had 2 birdies, but also a snowman and 3 7s. The total damage was 88, with several just plain wasted strokes - at least three timesI took a shot that left me worse off than I had been. Only 30 putts, so I think the yips are behind me.

Didn't really have time to run at lunch, and was feeling a bit sluggish after a late-night Java session, so I'm calling this a Rogaine taper day.

Went to the senior awards night, where Chelsea managed to pick up 11 awards - quite the haul. I think she has picked up just over $4K in scholarships (just $46K left to pay for next year). I had the honor of presenting her with a $500 check for being awarded the Webster Cross Country Jim May Scholarship. Unfortunately, it was not my best work.

Ran by X2 and picked up Scott, Vinny, Mike N and his co-worker (didn't really catch the name). Did the river loop over the Elmwood bridge, counter-clockwise which was quite strange. Mike N was going on to the GV footbridge, but when he took off, it was clear that it was too rich for my blood. Scott disappeared - I think he turned around at Elmwood. Vinny and I continued to pick it up a bit, dropping the co-worker and getting down to 7:08 for the measured mile (via 3:42 / 3:26).

Random splits: 21:56 at the UR footbridge, 27:44 after crossing the Elmwood bridge, 32:22 at mile start, 39:30 at mile end, about 10:05 from there to Xerox and another 2:42 back to the Y.

We're in the middle of birthday row today, with Luke turning 7. Chelsea turned 18 on Friday, and Nate will be 16, and qualified for a driving permit, this Friday, the 13th. I guess Chelsea got her permit on 6/6/6 and lived to tell about it, so perhaps there won't be any bad luck involved (knock on wood). Anyway, his first driving (well, not counting that late night trip in Aunt Brigid's car) will be done in Chelsea's car, not mine!

spiked:10/12c slept:5.0

BFLO Mini-Rogaine at Ellicottville Ski Area / State Forest.

With the heat, I figured I could wear myself out in 3 hours, so I didn't sign up for the 5 hour option. I grabbed C2 quickly, then went after C12, but I guess I left the road at the wrong stream (even though there was only one on the map) and followed if farther than I should have, distracted by others, including Walt and Brig on the same stream. Finally cut over to the east and followed another stream down. Apparently I didn't learn my lesson there, because on the way to C13, I found a stream (only one was on the map, and no other reentrant was visible on the map - turns out the contours are definitely overly-smoothed on this 1:20K map) and followed it to a clear end, but no flag. I bailed to the east and actually stumbled on the flag - not at a stream end, and not really in much of a reentrant.

I ran down and got C20, after spotting the proper reentrant on the way down the hill. C24 was very clean. Here I made a big mistake. I chose to play it safe and run the trail all the way back up to C6. When I got home, Nate pointed out how stupid that was, and I had to agree, since I ran back past C6 later on, and it was a long way around getting to C21 (although it was almost all trail). I did pick up C18 on the way to C21, although that was not my original plan, it just seemed to inviting along the way.

I had to skip C25, and picked up C19, but lost some time. I planned on skipping the water, so I cut in to the newly mapped trail, but I got confused at the junction, so I had to step out near the road anyway (but did not find the water in the field!), to get a proper read on the trail that led to C19. I went all trails to C27, and knew it was time to head back, starting with a serious climb.

I aimed for C17 on a bearing, thinking I would do a fly-by and hope to get lucky. It turned out I got a good location crossing the road, and continued on, spotting an unmapped reentrant before I got to the trail above 17 and guessed that it would turn into the mapped stream below the trail, and it did and the flag was mine. I continued running alongside the stream to the trail and grabbed C10, and it was time to hustle back. I stayed on the trail past C6 and at the end, I tried to go just south of west to the dirt road and in, but I hit a trail instead, right near a junction. The way I wanted to go turned and sent me the wrong way and I got confused. Eventually I just ran down something that was going mostly south, hit a dirt road which turned out to be N of where I thought I was, and couldn't make the 3-hour limit, although I hustled back quickly downhill.

Since I was 5 minutes late, and I figured the penalty was 1 control per minute, I decided to switch to the 5-hour category, but that's what they already had me signed up for. It turned out the penalty was just 10 points per minute, and I had 540, so I could have scored 490. Instead...

No one else had any serious points, but there was still 1 person out when the rain chased us on out of there.

Well, it was back to GTA this AM, finally, for just over 7 at just over 7 by 7. Here's the route. I was able to hang on a little closer and a little longer today, than before track season. At least part of that is being in slightly better shape. The biggest gap came in the last mile and a half, after I made one last downhill surge on Highland to try to close the gap, and was toast after that (only averaged 7:24 for the little over 1.25 miles along Highland and thru to Elmwood).

Good turnout this AM: Erik, Scott, JV, DV, Lawrence, Darren, G2, Vinny and a woman that came with Greg and kept up, even when Darren, Vinny and I dropped back (Scott is still facing some difficulty after last weekend). And Sue, Shannon and Alexis ran together.

Awful round for the league - put up a 48 on the back, nothing was working except the 4-wood, which I only got to use three times (the par 5s and 17th tee).

Got roped into playing in the Thursday night scramble afterwards. It was great fun, and I hit the ball much better (a well-oiled swing may have helped). Got to hit driver on 4 (always a 4-wood in normal play) and crushed it, with a draw, almost to the cart path next to the green. I went over the tree on the corner of the slight dogleg on 6, hitting the center of the fairway at 135 yards (so, 270 yards, slightly uphill). Did my share for the team and we were 4-under, but 6-under won it.

Ran over to meet Scott at the Square, but he wasn't ready, so I did a 5 min loop and returned. We ran the East-Culver-Park loop very easy, since he is still recovering from his Adventure Race in PA last weekend.

Ahh - Summer in the City. While I looped past Main and Clinton, waiting for Scott, there were a couple of dudes handcuffed to a railing, receiving some advice(?) from the police. We saw a tinted-windows SUV pulled over as the driver yapped on a cell phone. And leaving Midtown after grabbing some BK to go, security was, unsuccessfully, attempting to rouse a "gentleman" from his "nap" on a bench near Brad's.

And my official boss and the rest of my old group just moved out to Webster this week, while I have to move to an awful new open floor plan at the Square at the end of the month.

Doubled 9 for a 41. Combined with 42 for the back on Monday, gives me an 83 in GHIN. Now I need to do that in one day.

Things went well, even after problems (trees on 1, hit it to 1 foot from 113 yards; made a 50' putt on 4 from off the green, after squandering perfect tee shot; made a breaking 9 footer on 8 to salvage a bogey from the sand).

Running 39:47 [2] 4.82 mi (8:15 / mi)

From Luke's T-Ball game at Town Hall Park. Did some running around the trails, meandering toward Jackson then did a couple of loops in the 1000 Acre Swamp, and cruised back as the top of the 3rd was about to end. They played the first 3 innings in about 45 minutes, then switched to the pitching machine and the last 3 innings took over 80 minutes. Part of the delay is each pitch takes longer than hitting off the tee and there are more attempts required (limit of 3 per batter before switching to a tee), but most of the delay seems to be that throwing the ball back to the pitcher after each hit takes longer than throwing to the catcher (who has a backstop behind him, instead of another player to make another bad throw).

There was an outside event at the club, so I couldn't go off until 6pm. The good news is that I got off first and finished the back 9 in 69 minutes, while shooting a 42. The other good news is that I am no longer afraid of putting - only 16 putts today.

Went down to Addison for Tim's baby's baptism. It was in conjunction with 4 other infants that are her cousins - I've never seen so many related babies baptized at once, but there are about 15 kids in Cynthia's family, and she is about in the middle. A lot of grandparents these days don't wind up with 5 grandchildren, let alone 5 within a few months!

I thought about a run with Nate thru the woods in the hills behind Tim's house, but I was too hungry by the time we got there.
