Map Hike 50:42 [1] 1.91 mi (26:30 / mi) +58m 24:13 / mi

BFLO Map Hike at Emery Park. Had time to knock off 7 southern controls with Walt, while Zach was running, before the Bills game (and what a game!).

Hiking 1:21:33 [1] 3.08 mi (26:28 / mi) +6m 26:18 / mi

Moving around during the early races at the McQuaid Invitational. Niece Brenna was 7th in race #2 and nephew John was 16th in race #3.

Hiking 44:14 [1] 1.76 mi (25:10 / mi) +8m 24:49 / mi

More moving around during the East Aurora wins in the small seeded races.

Hiking 1:02:56 [1] 1.7 mi (37:08 / mi) +8m 36:35 / mi

More at McQuaid

Hiking 3:09:20 [1] 6.02 mi (31:27 / mi) +19m 31:08 / mi

Moving around during our late races.

The JV girls were able to field a complete team only because we ran just six in the Varsity race. Izzi went out just a little bit too fast, and Abby D almost caught her at the end. Kara re-injured her calf just after she had caught up to Izzi.

The Varsity Boys ran pretty well. Zach was just a bit slower than last year, but it looking better. Our 4th guy was not around the top 3 today, but we had a very close 5-7 and just need at least one of them to close more of the gap on the top 3.

The girls had an outstanding race. After the results were posted, I gave them this multiple choice quiz question:
The Schroeder girls unexpectedly beat what team today:
A. Hilton
B. Fairport (19th in the state rankings)
C. Rush-Henrietta (9th in the state rankings)
D. All of the above

And the answer was D.

In the merged results, we also beat Mendon (although they were missing Mary Barger again) and HF-L (soundly).

Hiking 26:21 [1] 1.12 mi (23:29 / mi) +17m 22:26 / mi

Short walk around the park while the kiddies only ran 25 minutes and some of them got messy somehow.

Hiking 1:48:42 [1] 1.22 mi (1:28:45 / mi) +17m 1:25:05 / mi

This is not all of the walking I did, but it includes some VERY painful walking (after I had set up and timed 5 x 800 on Upper Mallery) and a sad moment where a woman told me she was a nurse and asked if she could help me get somewhere. I must have looked pathetic. Luke kept me company and then I figured out I could walk backwards pain-free.

Shuffling 1:28:17 [1] 4.23 mi (20:51 / mi) +118m 19:11 / mi

Moving around during the three XC races at Webster Park.

First up were the boys, against strong teams from Thomas, Sutherland and Victor (well 3 top runners from Victor, which is enough to clinch a dual meet). Zach ran fairly well, but didn't quite match last year's time.

Luke was up next in the modified race - his first official race with the team. He had a very nice run and was 3rd on his team, averaging about 6:40 per mile for almost 1.5.

The girls finished up the meet with easy wins over Sutherland, Victor and Odyssey, as it was really a dual meet with Thomas (our two teams took 10 of the top 11 places). Thomas got us, 24-31, but not without a fight - a healthy Amanda, plus 27 seconds would have been enough to catch them.

Hiking 48:01 [1] 2.35 mi (20:28 / mi) +20m 19:56 / mi

Walking at Webster Park during practice. Forgot to bring the map to start field checking for the Webster 5th grade map, so I just rambled.
8 PM

Swimming 40:16 [3] 1.14 mi (35:19 / mi)

4:04/8:02, but I did have a few second break at the 300 to switch to the lane that emptied up.
1:30,31,30,29,30,29 (on 1:55)
3:34,32,26

Thought I would be much slower after swimming yesterday, but told myself that if I went fast, I could cut the workout shorter than yesterday, and I pulled it off.

Felt sluggish again, but substituted volume for speed.

Hiking 20:00 [3] 1.0 mi (20:00 / mi)

Walked part of the Modified course with Luke.

Shuffling 40:00 [2] 4.0 mi (10:00 / mi)

Shuffling around for the three races we were in at the Queensbury Invitational.

Luke was the earliest racer, making his modified debut. He got out well and looked good when I saw him again just after the mile mark, and he had moved up. He gained several more places before the finish, and averaged right about 7 min/mile for the 1.8 mi. course.

The girls were up next, and Amanda ran despite being ill, but the other girls put on a very nice performance with only a 37 second gap for 1-5. They finished 5th, only 13 points out of the top 3 awards, which would have been a cinch if Amanda had been healthy.

The boys were out fast (top 4 under 75 at the 1/4 mile), but were well back in the pack. By the time I saw them twice in the middle, they had moved up pretty well, and they had a strong finish (except Kevin who cramped up and got passed by Ray) to place 8th as a team despite 20 teams having a #1 runner ahead of ours.

Kade was by himself in the JV race, and had to go out fast because of the much larger field. He held on pretty well to keep moving up and finished 24th.

Hiking 40:00 [3] 2.0 mi (20:00 / mi)

A bunch of other walking around to view some of the other races, etc. Conservative estimate of distance - my hip really wore out over the course of the day. McQuaid will be tough.

Hiking 1:02:03 [1] 3.05 mi (20:21 / mi) +30m 19:45 / mi

Walking around the course at Queensbury HS - site of tomorrow's Queensbury Invitational and this November's state meet.

The kiddies jogged the course (taking a break after the mile for dynamic), then did some more jogging and six strides off the line.

Golfing 9:00 [1]

Final night of the golf league - was a best ball tourney. I shot 41, for net 33 and my partner got us down to net 31.

The decent score took its toll on my hip and the walking was getting uncomfortable late.

Hiking 30:47 [1] 0.97 mi (31:34 / mi) +19m 29:46 / mi

Moving around the course at Northampton Park during the boys race. The race played out as expected, with Mendon handling us easily, but we had no trouble overcoming both Athena and Spencerport going 1-2 on us, as we put 5 and 7 ahead of their third guys and at least 9 ahead of 4th. Brockport was farther back.

Hiking 58:14 [1] 1.05 mi (55:27 / mi) +21m 52:13 / mi

Moving around the course during the girls race. What a race! Autumn took off from the start and never slowed to easily beat Leila's course record, and Mary didn't run for Mendon so Amanda was all alone in second the whole way. The Mendon girls started out easy, and allowed Julia and Kelsie to get out of reach of all but one girl. When their pack got moving during the second mile, only five of them were able to move ahead of Claire and Natalie, so we finished 1-3-4-9-10, for an exciting 27-28 win - it's the first time we've beaten the Mendon girls in the internet era (since 2003), and probably quite a few years before that.

Map Hike 1:08:33 [1] 2.5 mi (27:25 / mi)

BFLO Map Hike at Emery Park before the awesome Bills game. Had planned on going longer, but after 8 controls I noticed that blood had drained down my shin and saturated the top of my sock. I had to sit down and apply pressure to get the bleeding to stop, even though I think it was just a thorn that got it going - must have hit exactly the wrong spot. So, I ended up only getting 9 controls (couldn't find the one by the "distinct tree" next to the trail on the west side of the map) - working the west side of the park north of Emery.

Distance a total guess.

Map Hike 33:17 [1] 1.5 mi (22:12 / mi) +25m 21:07 / mi

Walking part of the Bristol Challenge course.

Shuffling 42:47 [2] 1.45 mi (29:29 / mi) +12m 28:45 / mi

Moving around during the girls race. They ran quite well, even if the Tully Speed ratings don't say so.

Map Hike 43:52 [2] 1.06 mi (41:19 / mi) +15m 39:34 / mi

Moving around during the boys race. They took 7 of the top 14 spots, so not bad for an 11-school meet (although 8 of the schools were small schools...).

Shuffling 10:00 [2] 0.9 mi (11:07 / mi) +23m 10:18 / mi

Spent some time at Northampton Park, since we run there for the first time ever on Tuesday, where I planned out a most excellent workout for the kiddies: w/up on first mile, 2 x 1/2 mile intervals on the second mile, 5 x ski hill and 2 x 1/2 mile on the third mile. Sadly the weather intervened and thunder chased the kids onto the bus after the w/up. Thought there was a break, so we did one interval before more thunder rumbled, sending them on a tempo back to the bus, too late to wait 30 minutes to try again (although it turned out to be perfectly clear in 15...).

Shuffling 54:43 [2] 2.45 mi (22:20 / mi) +28m 21:34 / mi

Cruising around the course - sometimes actually kind of running - during the boys first league meet a Center Park. Sadly we drew Fairport, Irondequoit and Brighton on opening day - ranked 10th and 14th in Class A and 8th in Class B, respectively, in the state. We were respectable.

The heat was brutal - start was delayed to 5pm and still the real feel was 93 or so at the start.

Shuffling 42:36 [2] 1.83 mi (23:16 / mi) +17m 22:37 / mi

Repeat of the basic circuit for the girls race. Brighton and Irondequoit opted not to run, but we couldn't even consider that with a shot at Fairport. The girls went out relatively conservatively, per plan, and moved up in the second mile, poised to take control, but Fairport rallied in the third mile to hold us off. Runners 2-5 need to gain an average of 10 seconds to move us ahead of Fairport.
8 PM

Swimming 54:03 [3] 1.42 mi (38:04 / mi)
weight:173.5lbs

4:13/8:40
1:34,38,40,39,37,38 (on 1:55)
3:46,34

Went real easy on the 500 since my legs felt vulnerable coming from the XC meet, then cruised thru the 100s. The first 200 included major cramping in my calves when I pushed off for the backstroke, so I was cautious, but the second was better. There was a small master's group in two lanes, a couple of lanes over, doing a workout and when I finished the 200s I heard the coach tell them 4x100 on 2:10, so I started at the same time. The guy beat me on the first one, but I had no trouble passing him on the others. I think I was 1:45, then some 1:40s. Then they were doing 8x50 on 1:10, so I figured why not. The first couple were very easy, so I gave them a five second head start on 3-7, before going easy on 8 as the cramps were starting to return. I was about 50 on the first and last and 46 on all of the others.

Orienteering race 18:45 [2] 1.73 mi (10:48 / mi) +11m 10:36 / mi

BFLO Ohmstead Challenge at Delaware Park before the Bills game (so close).

I actually jogged/shuffled the whole way except for a few downhill steps, but generally the slopes were gentle enough that I was able to keep moving. Despite being so slow, it looks like only one person went faster.

Note
(rest day)

Did some strolling around the Center Park course, as the team jogged it. We have not raced there since the seniors were in 8th grade, so only Zach has raced the 5K course here (although Brian did run it with Jack Scott).

Wednesday Sep 4, 2013 #

Note
(rest day)

No time for exercise today, despite the vacation day, as I had to shuffle off to Buffalo for an important meeting, which lasted about five hours, and earned a trip to the Bar Bill afterwards for some of the legendary hot wings.

Shuffling 8:00 [2] 0.8 mi (10:00 / mi)

Blue & Gold meet, which required some movement around the course at faster than walking speed, although I wouldn't call it Running, so I've added a new category.

Gold was victorious for the 5th year in a row, which is really strange, as I try very hard to make equal teams.

The Ys were closed today. With Blue & Gold tomorrow, kept it rather short.
