Saturday May 31

Event: ROC - Durand Eastman Park

Running 50:33 [3] 6.3 mi (8:01 / mi)
slept:7.0
Went for a run during the first (of two) thunderstorm delays at the Section V Class AA meet. The storm passed thru (mostly during the boys 1600) before any thunder sounded off to the northeast, so it was a great time to run, much of the time in the sun, none of the time in the rain. I ran into Hilton and did the block south of the village, then west and back up Hill St and back into the village on West, then back to the school.

Nate ran the Steeplechase and struggled in the last 1000m or so. I'm not sure how much was due to the poison ivy on the soles of his feet - must have gotten that on the trip home after last weekend - bare feet near used O clothes is not a good combo.

Chelsea was anchoring the girls 4x400, but didn't get to run, as the leadoff girl false-started (from a standing position in a 400 - oops).

Chelsea and Nate both ran the 4x800. Chelsea anchored, and unfortunately they were far from teams ahead and behind when she got the baton, so she only went out in 75. She did rally to come back in 72 for a 2:27 in the final race of her high school career.

Last year, we weren't even able to enter a boys 4x800, so it was great having a leadoff runner be even with Fairport for first place (Vanzo came from about 8th place with 300m to go). AB kept us right behind the leaders for a lap, before getting worn out a bit. Nate ran 2:13, the slowest on the team, but good enough to setup Nico to catch 2 teams (while Tyler S from Penfield passed him), and earn 5th place. With everyone back next year (and perhaps with Vanzo doing some 800 training), perhaps we can move up a bit.

Ran on the Basil Marella map after dropping Zach off for his soccer game at Kirk Rd ES. The map needs significant updating - it's not very usable now. It seems they have made significant changes to the disc golf course, some holes are gone, others have been added. They've also added concrete slabs for tees (mappable?) and there is now an impassable fence around the open field near the main parking to control access to the main football/soccer field. And there are several trail changes, including some new paved trails.

Played 9 after work, before heading over for the last few innings of Luke's T-Ball game. He has too many teammates that have no skills and no attention span. One or the other is fine, but don't send your kid out lacking both. And to think I had to "stretch the truth" (ok, lie) to get him in this league and not the beginner league for kids a year younger.

The golfing started out well - par on 3 of the first 5 holes, then a guy joined me as I waited to tee off on 6, which I promptly doubled, and doubled again on 9 for a 42.

US Team Trials, Long Blue.

A pretty fine effort, given the legs were a little tired going into this race. I had two errors that were too large, and some smaller stuff. The big errors were on C14 and C20. On C14, I had punched C13 just before Ted, but couldn't get up the hill as quickly as he did. I closed some of the gap running across the field, but the visibility was poor in the early part of the woods and I lost sight of him. I saw him again when my pace count said I was within 50m of the control, but I couldn't tell whether he had already punched and got distracted. Then some teenager started yapping at me, asking where he was. I said there was a field up the hill, go relocate. He kept pestering me and I got flustered and had to climb partway to the field to relocate myself, and came right down into the reentrant. He followed me to the control and again asked where he was. This allowed Ross to get in, punch and get out, without my being able to leave.

On the way to C20, I was distracted by a flag that was too early. I saw it was in a pit and saw a pit on the map, so I ran in the indicated direction. Oops, wrong pit - the flag was in the v, not in the u. So I got to run past Mike M the photographer 3 times - once to the wrong boulders, once to the correct spot, and then leaving the control correctly. It looks like I got a nice photo out of the deal anyway.

US Team Trials Sprint

What a disaster. I was not prepared for such detailed map reading on a campus sprint. My two previous efforts (NAOC at Macmaster and the Flying Pig at Miami Ohio) just required fast running and mostly rough reading, and that's how this one started out. My first problem came at C7 where I didn't see the obvious route to the right, got in front of the building, tried to go around to the left and got trapped by the impassable wall - had to go around the other way - there goes 1.5 minutes. I lost time on C10 by taking the stairs down from C9, and then lost about 45 seconds on C11 by running too low first, then going to C12, thinking I could make it between the buildings (but it was all one building). C14 was the gaffe of the day - I crossed over the road that is north of 14 and wasn't able to relocate until I was in the parking lots north of C17 - an error of about 2 minutes. I then turned around and blew C17 to the tune of 1 minute - not reading the map properly until the control was not behind the air conditioning unit.

The only good news is that I was able to run fast when I wanted to.
Running warm up/down 20:00 [2] 2.22 mi (9:00 / mi)
Jogged where I could on the way to the start, which wasn't a whole lot considering that it took 45 (2.5m) contours to get there (not counting the couple that we gave up on the way). Did some more jogging and strides near the start.

Afterwards, Nate and I mostly jogged the shortcut back to the start to see Zach off, then jogged back down to the finish.

I'm not 100% sure that this will be a rest day; I hope to do some light jogging.

Shot a 90, thanks to a quadruple-bogey on 13 (started off in the water - not sure when that last happened). My putting was again atrocious. Only 35 putts (thanks to some fine chipping - lipped the hole twice), but on 11 holes I made putts from 0 or 1 feet, and 3 more were from 2 feet. I'm getting the distance mostly right, it's the "yips" or whatever is causing my club face to come off line.

Not a good opening day of the golf league - put up a 46. The windy conditions certainly didn't help, but the lack of concentration was equally to blame.

Running 58:00 [2] 6.1 mi (9:29 / mi)
Jogging around during the Dirt Cheap trail race at Webster Park. I would have jumped in, but I was sure I wouldn't run as easily as I should, with the Team Trial races (vs. Nate) coming up this weekend. It's not often that I get to cheer for runners other than the teams I coach.

Time and pace are estimates. I did pretty well starting and stopping my watch, but nowhere near exact. I was out for 70 minutes plus a couple jogs to and from parking, but stopped to spectate a few times.

Didn't mean to take another day off, but I couldn't get away at lunchtime and after work I had enough time to play 9 before watching the last 5 innings of Luke's T-Ball game. When I got home, after voting on the school budget, I still hadn't had lunch, so training was doomed.

Shot a 43, including an 8 on #15, folding under the pressure of having hit the first 5 greens in regulation (but I had 3-putted twice, missing from 3-feet both times, so I was already +2). I had an abysmal 21 putts in all - including the 21-footer that I sank from off the green, after missing a downhill 50-footer that just wouldn't stop.

slept:7.0 (rest day)
Took the day off to recover from the weekend. It was actually an active recovery day, since I did plenty of running around the track during the meet against Spencerport. The boys and girls both pulled off relatively exciting wins.

Chelsea almost had a career day. She won the 400 in 63, then finished just behind Megan (and just ahead of the Spencerport star) in the 800 (2:33, the hard way: 80, then 73). She then ran back-to-back winning relays - 4x400 and 4x800.

Nate also had a nice run in the 3200, although he didn't believe me when I told him he had to sprint to break 11, so he finished in 11:00.8, but that was good for 2nd place.

National Capital Orienteering Festival - Classic Course 7.

It seems Canadian orienteering just doesn't agree with me.

I ran nearly the first 30 minutes thinking I was on a 1:10 map, but, as we had been told, it was a:15, so I did not find the first control in that time. I returned to the start at 29:57, to start over, and realized the map was 1:15 - got to C1 in about 4 minutes. That mistake took most of the wind out of my sails, and the rough going (limited visibility and terrain not suited to my running) took out the rest. I was OK to C2 and C3, but the path to C4 was not runnable for me, so although I executed the route I wanted (well, pretty close), I was still quite slow.

C5 was my second disaster of the day. I came within about 30m of spiking it, as I came along above the stream, to the west, and thought I was at the double reentrant, and expected to see the cliff, but I saw no rock features (as it turned out that was due to the limited visibility), so I convinced myself that I had to go further. In fact, I talked myself into going all the way to where the descent towards the river started, and I saw the river. I then returned south to the control, attacking successfully from the same double reentrant I had visited some 20+(?) minutes ealier. C6 was smooth and C7 was not too bad (again, just lots of walking).

C8 was the third, final, and worst disaster of the day. I crossed the rough open marshy area right on the line and hit the small hilltop just beyond. From there I went left of the line to avoid some climb and came back to hit and cross the marsh, and followed it to what seemed to be the tip, and attacked, with no luck - when I started to climb, I knew I had gone too far. I could not see very far at all and the area was flat and indistinct, with the vegetation mapping not really helping me at all. I attempted to relocate several times, including from what I thought was the small marsh east of the flag and the rocky area above the stream. I eventually had one last chance, or I knew I would be OVT anyway. I missed again and had to leave. I came to the stream just where expected , so I had to have been very close. I went to the right and followed the trails to attack C9. I came in high on C10, but there was finally a control visible from a distance. I didn't want to deal with another marsh at this point, so I jogged due east to the trail to get C11 and made it in with MSP instead of OVT.

One additional learning: If I run thru so many saplings again, I have to seriously consider wearing a cup. Ouch.

Well, I hope this at least served as solid HTFU training for next weekend. I expect this week to be a full blown taper - Nate and I could have a good battle next weekend. He took 2 out of 3 from me, but we're headed back to the US.
Running warm up/down 6:30 [2] 1.3 km (5:00 / km)
Jogged back out to the start after shadowing Luke.
Running 25:00 [1] 4.7 km (5:19 / km)
Approximate time that I spent jogging out towards the start with Luke, then following him on his course. He really hustled some sections, especially after Ethan passed us on the trail.

Saturday May 17

Event: National Capital Orienteering Festival

Orienteering race 37:51 [4] 3.4 mi (11:07 / mi)
Time might be right, but this is just a preliminary posting for Chris, since we just got back to the hotel.

Nate had a disaster of a run, over 50 minutes; 2 huge errors (perhaps 6-8 minutes). It was very limited visibility and challenging navigation.

Luke had a decent run, but the hills took a lot out of him, so he finished at the back of the pack (not by much).

I was very close to many bags, but couldn't see them with the limited visibility and the "strategic" placement. I eventually figured out that there was a big advantage to knowing which side of the feature the control would be on, and missing that way made it simple to recover.

I only got in a halfway decent workout (perhaps intensity was as low as "2" overall). Between the limited visibility and the difficulty of fighting through the light green, I spent too much time going slow. More later...

I did manage to edge out the Kempster, but Eugene made up 4 minutes on me, and then outnavigated me in the last few controls. I think I was 3rd in my age group (running "down"!). Nate did manage 2nd, but that's with an asterisk, since Andrew got injured just after the first control and had to take it easy.
Orienteering race 19:30 [4] 2.4 km (8:07 / km)
The rain came in shortly before the sprint started, so it was quite different than the beautiful weather for the noontime Middle starts.

My race ended up being a disaster. I was sloppy to the first control and gave up a bit of time, then I just had a "duh" moment at C2, which was surrounded by buildings, but I stopped short when I couldn't see a flag. C3-5 were fine, but I missed C6 too far right and it was a decent climb (and I was in no position to climb), so I lost time 2 ways. I had another OK stretch (except I could tell I was slow on the uphills), until C12, which I blew by 90 seconds - running to the main road, instead of the dirt road, and had to come back uphill. And C13 was a 1 minute error, trying to go straight through green, instead of the very friendly route past the tennis courts. I avoided that because I didn't want to run so close to the finish - how stupid is that.

Nate had a much better race. I don't think he beat the Kempster (who won the elite women's race), but he was 15:41 with only a couple of minor navigation errors. He didn't run as hard as he could have, so that's what cost him some time. I think the winning M21E was under 13, and Nate could have been in the 14s easily.

After I got back, I followed Luke around. He had just a couple of starts in the wrong direction, but recovered himself. He was not last in M12 this time, but the rain chased us away from waiting to see results. Luke can stand to improve his map usage. He doesn't thumb, so every time he has to look at the whole map and figure out where he is.
Note
OK, so we added another attackpointer this evening. I didn't have time to pull all the info from him about today's races.
Running warm up/down 36:00 [2] 4.0 mi (9:00 / mi)
A low-ball estimate of w/up before the Middle, w/dn afterwards (quite short), w/up for the sprint (fairly short) and w/dn afterwards (the sproadic running after Luke).

Thursday May 15

Running 23:40 3.5 mi (6:45 / mi)
slept:7.75 weight:163lbs
Had the varsity boys do the 4x400m workout that Marc did in 3:50 last year. They did pretty well - I think AB was about 4:06 and Nico was just behind. Nate was about 4:26 and Kenny just behind him. JP was under 5 minutes. I was right on 5 minutes, despite doing them alone. I timed the kids, then ran one, allowed for recovery and repeated. I went 75, 76, 76, 74. I don't think I've run 4 quarters that fast in several years.

We did 7 strides afterwards. And I had just over a mile w/up. Plus some jogging between reps.
Golfing 1:00 [1]
Had less than 15 minutes on the range. I guess they officially close it at 6 on Thursdays (I though it was 7).
Hashing 1:24:55 [2] 7.08 mi (11:59 / mi)
We were out for just about 2 hours, so this is just the time spent moving - we had two stops, and I stopped the watch for a couple of stretches where we had to walk.

Very nice trail in honor of Frequent Faller's visit from Hotlanta, where he has been for over a year. After a giant circle at the start, it included some serious tours of the ER/Penfield/Pittsford (depending on who you are talking to) trailer parks and some nice running around the Corbett's Glen area and Irondequoit Creek.

Highlight of the trail was probably the culvert crawl under a railroad bed on a serious hill - probably saved about 5 or 6 contours of climb. It might have been here.

Ran with Scott - E-Colby-Park and in via the alley past Muther's, etc.

OK, perhaps I can still play this game. After 44 putts on 18 holes last weekend, I managed to get out with just 15 putts in 9 holes tonight. And my score showed - put up a 40 on the front 9, which included a ball in the water on #3.

I had 3 drives of 260+ yards, including one into the wind on #6. Too bad I'm out of town the next two weekends.

Tuesday May 13

Running 45:00 [3] 5.81 mi (7:45 / mi)
I ran 20 minutes before the track meet at Fairport - around the school grounds to Ayrault to the next neighborhood west and just into the Center Park field for a brief loop, before returning to the school via the shortcut from that neighborhood. Center Park plus the high school, with the shortcut as a bottleneck would be a good Wyoming training map with all of the hills and some rough open land.

I ran several 50-100m strides across the infield during the meet to catch races at different spots. I'm taking credit for 5 minutes, though it was certainly more than that.

Started driving home and decided I had to cowboy-up, so I pulled in to Center Park and ran 20 minutes, covering most of the XC course, while looking back at all of the splits I had captured from the meet (not running with a map, but probably helpful training as I calculated splits on the fly).

The boys and girls both got smoked by Fairport, but we had some good performances. Nate went 2:12 in his first 800 done fresh in a long time. But he was clearly overshadowed by Vanzo's 2:03 (with no distance training - he does the 400 hurdles). Chelsea also PR'd, going 2:27 to finish a solid second, passing 2 Fairport girls in the last 300m. Then Kenny won the 3200m (OK, so Pat DuPont was not in the race, still any win against Fairport is a big win).

ROC Meet at Mendon Ponds Park - Red Course.

It looks like I eeked out a 16 second win over Rob. I was running very hard and didn't make many mistakes, so I'm looking forward to seeing the splits and finding out where he made up time - there was a lot of trail running, so I thought I could pick up a fair amount of time, since I tend to have an advantage on trails.

I went way left to C1 to avoid some climbing and thinking. 2-5 were pretty straightforward - more Y/O than advanced. I went right to C6, attacking from the small building in the field. I aimed just a bit left for C7, using the second trail to lead me in. C8 had an indistinct trail leading almost right to the bag. C9 was fun. I angled out to the driveway to the trail. When the trail started way right, I went straight and joined back up with it and cut in when the woods got white.

C10 was a problem, not in navigating, but in choosing the worst time to catch my foot on a log and fall forward - it was just as I was crossing the swamp and my right arm went in up to the elbow. Guess that SID rental is going to need a washing. Took a few seconds to clean my map and compass and cut to the left side of the pines, which basically led to a control (although it was blocked from my side by a nasty downed tree).

I almost panicked when I hit the rough open field near C11, because the vegetation did not match the map. Luckily the control feature was the only clump of pines, so that was a big relief when I realized that. I angled right of the line leaving C11 and hit the trail before I hit the swamp. I lost some time leaving the road - almost tried to go too far, but came back quickly. Probably the highlight of the day was seeing a control up at the top of a reentrant and being very tempted to go there, but knowing that I hadn't gone far enough, and that C12 was closer to the swamp, I resisted the temptation to check it out.

I made two mistakes on the next leg. I left C12 way too far left, and had to recover. Then I didn't see the trail that was the left fork in the woods leading to the field and ran around to the right. From the field there was a convenient swath of grass that was on line to the control, and I could see the flag from 150m. C14 was not good. I lost contact with the map after going near C4, and just used the compass to head in the right direction, sometimes on trails, sometimes off.

I hadn't started my watch at the beginning, so I wasn't sure of the precise time, but I knew it was close, so I gave everything I had running up to the finish control. Good thing, as it turns out.

Finally got out for 18 holes. Had a first ever in golf today, but it was not a good first. After 3-putting for bogeys on 8 and 9, I resolved not to continue that trend, and on 10, I didn't, I 3-putted for par instead. First time I've ever done that. I had a beautiful drive and hit a 4-wood from 220 yards, 16 feet past the hole (had to have been very close to the pin). I almost sank the eagle putt, but then it rolled 4 feet past and I missed the birdie putt as well. OUCH!

I wound up with an agonizing 44 putts on my way to a 96. It's a shame to score so poorly when I was hitting the ball so well for early in the year.

Running around during the Marion Invitational. Most of this was a 30 minute run - I went out 16 minutes and did 5 x 1 min quick steps on the way back, working up from 160 steps on the first to 179 on the last (I was doing 150 while slogging along).

The extra 15 minutes is a very conservative estimate of the various running around for a variety of reasons - mainly the fact that coaches were not allowed on the infield for this meet.

Legs were still heavy from the weekend when I was walking to the Y, but they felt better in the middle of the run, then it go tough near the end (the tired legs being the limiting factor).
Golfing 10:00 [1]
Snuck off for 30 minutes of range time after watching the start of Luke's first T-Ball game. It didn't move TOO slowly, but mid-year when they start using the pitching machine, things will drag out.

Went for a run during the kids' warm down, which for some kids appeared to be, literally, a walk in the woods. They did not run when I went by them, but they did start running when they saw the chicks coming towards them. At least they have some self-respect.

First time actually on the course this year. 5 3-putts meant a 50 wound up on my card. Not a good way to start the season.

I did manage to play the 9 holes in 60 minutes.

West Point A-Meet - Classic Race.

Much better than yesterday AM, but not nearly as good as yesterday PM. I let myself get too discouraged when I saw how late it was getting after C9. That cost me some time which could have changed a decent race into a great race.

I started off to the left for C1, to avoid the green near the nose and go around the reentrant, aiming for the trail, but I went way left, and wound up left of the clearing with the tower, and then I was clean to the bag. C2 looked troublesome - I got over the first set of hills and then I had nothing, so I just went slowly on bearing and pace count, which got me in the neighborhood. C3 wasn't too bad - I was able to check off some features along the way. I lost a couple of minutes on C4 - I missed the flag on the way by, so I relocated to the top of the hill N of the circle and was back in business. The early contours got me headed in the right direction to C5 and the water to the right helped me into the circle. I lost a couple of minutes more on C6 - I tried to go straight, but didn't pay enough attention to the contours. This should have been an easy control, or at least a trivial control to pull off a quick recovery. By the time I punched, Samantha was bearing down on the control.

I stayed low leaving C6, even though my goal on this massive leg was to run as much trail as possible. I thought I was angling up the wide reentrant, but luckily it was the smaller reentrant that popped me out on the road, near the bend, with Samantha chasing me. I took a right at the T and paused at the trail junction to decide if that was worth taking and she went zipping by, staying on the road. That cemented my choice, but she left the road earlier than I thought I wanted to, and I continued on, which was a poor choice, since as I got going thru the woods, it became clear that I wanted to go left of the swamp. At this point feet caught me, and since I was just going to run hard to the road, and he was headed that way, I tried to stay close. We hit the road and I kept pushing hard, and he left the road, basically on my line, but I wanted no part of that route. I started to catch Samantha again as I stayed on the road past the big splotch of green. Once again, Samantha entered the woods earlier than me, I left the road at the little hilltop on the right. There was more green than mapped, so I couldn't hold the bearing that I had taken, nor could I see any features. Eventually my pace count told me that I had to be beyond the control, and I went to a small hilltop to relocate, when Samantha and someone else came running from behind me. I realized which hilltop I was on, and was able to get back to the flag, but they were long gone. On the way into C8, I saw feet again, and punched just before him. Looking back at the control codes, I'm guessing his leg was from my C5 to my C8, so he clearly had a big problem after I saw him leave the road.

C9 was going to be another fairly long leg, so I just wanted to get to a trail. feet was headed my way, so I tried to keep up thru the woods, and pretty much did, but only because he paused to punch another control. He just used the trail briefly, while I used it to figure out how the heck I was going to get to the control. By the time I got to the trail junction, a good 350m right of the line, it was clear that I was not going to want to try to go right of the cliffs, so I was going to have to go 150m left of the line to take the trail to the left of the cliffs. With all of that extra running, I was sure I had just had another bad leg, looked at my watch, saw I was not going to be anywhere near 10min/km, and got depressed. And leaving C9 it was uphill, so I did some walking, then there was a plateau full of those annoying little (blueberry?) bushes, so I walked some more. I ended up spiking C10, but at a very low speed. I wasn't so lucky on C11 - I saw the first couple boulder pairs, first right of the line, then left, but then there was too much rock for me to deal with. I kept thinking the next little cliff would be mine, but it wasn't, so I gave up and went down to the flatter area, and was able to see the flag, so I climbed back up. A third of the way to C12, a youngster was having troubles, so I gave him a ballpark idea of where we were - he realized his next control was mine, so he followed me in, and we caught someone else. I went left towards C13, but not left enough - I wasn't below the cliffs, and they became quite impassable, so I had to climb back up a bit. I wound up catching some of the green but worked my way past the end of the pronounced cliff and shortly after found myself at the top of a high cliff, and a fourth guy joined the train, so I thought "great, just below me is the bag", but no. But I was at the top of another cliff, and hustled down again while the others paused - I was able to punch and scram before they made it down.

I saw the trail to C14 on the ground before I had a chance to see it on the map, so it was off to the races.

It wasn't until I returned from the hospital with Z that I saw the results and found out that my late-race depression was unwarranted and only managed to cost me some time and places. Had I known that 11min/km would win and 12 min would be plenty good enough for 3rd, I may have been able to stay motivated. Yet another lesson learned.
Note
There was more "excitement" than I wanted today. As I finished the course, someone came up to me and asked if I was Zach's father. He was lying under a blanket (not on it, next to a broken toaster oven), and had slipped on a rock, fallen, and gashed his knee.

I hustled him over to the Army hospital, where he quickly got cleaned up, received 3 stitches and was sent on his way (the long pole in the tent was the delay in contacting Chris by phone to get insurance info). The ER visit took less than an hour - very impressive.

Event: West Point A-Meet

Note
slept:6.5 (rest day)
No time to swim at lunch, so an easy day became a rest day, since I left work just after 3 to grab Zach, pick Walt and Dave C up in Mt. Morris and David L in Bath, then on to West Point.

West Point A-Meet - Middle Distance Red.

I have my splits, but not my map, so I'll have to update this later.

Started out conservatively, and it worked well, with a big hill to my right for most of the way to C1. Just had small misses with C2 and C3, but C4 included a nice road run to get the speed up. But that led to too much speed on the way to C5 and I had to relocate. I overshot C8, but I knew I had been left. I found a clearing as I climbed back up the hill to my right, so I thought I knew where I was, but it turned out that I was at an unmapped clearing 50% closer to the bag. I blew C9 badly, less than 100m, almost 4 minutes; I got lost in the combination of mountain laurel and cliffs. C11 was a disaster - I left C10 going the wrong way around the rocks and never really got back in contact with the map, so I did some wandering. I should have gone to the nose and/or stream to the right earlier, and been more careful leaving it, but all said and done, I lost about 10 minutes.

Did I recover from the C11 error? No, I immediately lost contact during the 100m leg to C12 and it wound up taking me almost 9 minutes. I was using the thumb compass, and did not get a good bearing, so I wound up heading between the wrong set of cliffs. One could wander for hours near the flag and not find it in this area - there are many more rock features than mapped, and I don't have a discerning enough eye to see the difference. I was a fairly clean on the last couple - well, if you don't count the fact that I took a trail almost the whole way from C13 to C14 while never finding it on the map!

I can't let West Point (and the Harriman area in general) get to my head anymore. I need to run hard on the easy legs and take my time if there is no "no-brainer" route. I also need a bail-out plan on every leg, and use it earlier.

West Point A-Meet - Red/Blue Sprint

Much better than this AM!

I started one minute behind Hillary, and caught sight of her near controls 4 and 5, as I had closed the gap significantly. I ran into a small problem shortly afterwards and then a big problem on the leg that took us past exercise equipment that I couldn't find on the map (but there was a control there - I think Ethan Childs punched it). It may have been C10. I then saw David and thought he was going from C1 to C2, having forgotten that he started ahead of me. So, I ignored him, and since I had gone to a control that wasn't mine on the way to C2, I was sure it was my C11, but when I got there, no. I punched C12 and hustled to C13, having seen it while waiting to start. By C15 (if that was the one in the field), I saw that I had closed the gap on Hillary again, to about 30 seconds.

I hustled in fairly cleanly, even though I was really running out of gas (this was a long sprint). I almost caught Carl(?) Underwood at the go control - he had started his course the same time I started mine. But I couldn't catch him or Ethan on the way to the finish, after spazzing out a bit punching GO.

I was much happier with this race. I split the Saeger sisters on the results sheet (just 5 seconds behind Samantha), and when I left, I was 7th overall on Red/Blue and 1st by several minutes on M45+. Let's see what I can do to build off this for tomorrow.

Running warm up/down 18:00 [2] 2.0 mi (9:00 / mi)
Some jogging ahead of both events, including the 1K to the start in the AM.
Hiking 20:00 [1] 4 km (5:00 / km) +200m 4:00 / km
Walked to the start early with Zach so he would know where to go, then we walked back.

And the walk back to the cars from the finish, including a long bonus loop up and down the hill because we followed someone who thought they knew where they were going, but no.

Running 20:00 [2] 2.58 mi (7:45 / mi)
Running around during the track meet at Penfield, including one long loop. Pretty exciting, for a dual meet. Details are at my Webster Distance Runners blog, so I won't repeat them here.
