Sunday Aug 31

Running 47:34 [2] 5.6 mi (8:30 / mi)
Since my tee time was 10:00, I was able to run early and avoid having to run after golf.

I ran down Daytona and into Irondequoit Bay Park. I went past the road, then past the Y trail, but wound up in a marshy area and had to follow a reentrant up to the east. I spotted a mostly overgrown trail and it led up to the north side of Baywinde and home via Creek. Did 6 minutes at 164/min on Creek, comfortably.
Golfing race 18:00 [1]
PCC Club Championships - final round.

Being in 5th place put me in the 2nd last group. I birdied the first hole, then made some putts and was even after 3, but I took a double after a poor second shot and 3 putts on 4. But a sandy on 5 turned the tide and I also made par on 6-7-8. I missed the par putt on 9, but turned in a PR of 38 on the front. Stuck to gatorade on the turn and probably should not have. I managed a bogey on 10, but then went double-triple-double and was 8-over after just 4 holes. I made at least 3 3-putts on the back, but managed to make par on 18 (after hitting the sand off the tee) to keep it under 50, for another 87. A guy in my group shot 80 to win, as the leaders faltered, and I managed to move up to 4th. Too bad - after 10 holes I was still ahead of the eventual winner.

Saturday Aug 30

Golfing 18:00 [1]
slept:7.5 (rest day)
PCC Club Championships - Flight 3.

3-putted 5 times on the first 10 holes, but the refreshment at the turn seemed to kick in and I was more steady after that. I was 87 (I think it was 45-42), which was good enough for 4th in the flight after round 1, but 7 shots of the lead.

Z & L came over for a swim afterwards, then Mass, then I was far too hungry to run, so I decided a day off was best.

Friday Aug 29

Running 40:00 [2] 4.71 mi (8:30 / mi)
slept:6.0
Running around before, during and after the Blue / Gold meet at Webster Park.

How was the meet? Hmmm, 2 girls made it, no Nico, Chris showed up after the start, Kenny kicked Nate's butt, and our 4th and 5th men were 20:57 and 21:00. I think next week will be better (but no Nico, no Chris; I hope a complete girls team).

Thursday Aug 28

Running 25:30 [2] 3.0 mi (8:30 / mi)
rhr:44 slept:6.5 weight:163lbs
Easy 3 around Schroeder and Summit Knolls during XC practice, then the kids played ultimate as round 1 of the Blue / Gold Intrasquad competition - a very competitive game (on the scoreboard, if not in athletic capabilities).

My legs were fried from yesterday's workout - especially the lower inside part of the quads.

Wednesday Aug 27

Running 1:16:06 9.5 mi (8:01 / mi)
rhr:42 slept:6.5
XC Practice at Ellison Park.

I took the advanced guys over for some "feet" hill intervals. They started at the bridge at the base of the stream, ran along the stream and took the trail to the left, up the reentrant, then made a couple more lefts and finished at the tree in the path at the last trail offshoot. Then it was an easy jog/climb down the steep hill to the start. The boys did 5 of them, with Nico averaging just over 3:45, Kenny and AB just about 4:00, AJ a bit further back, Ethan hanging on amazingly well (as the only volunteer "advanced" runner), and Chris bringing up the rear.

I wasn't able to run with them, since they did not all have watches, so I ran from the start, up the steep hill to the finish (in 2:01-2:09), then continued on for another ~45 seconds, and back to the finish in time to read off times. It was a pretty tough workout for me (and even tougher for them, I hope).

We were supposed to do a 15 minute warm down, but I let the boys lead and they went out to the quarry and down. At that point it was just as well to return via Penfield Rd to the trail head, so that's what we did, getting back over by Landing Rd just over 10 minutes after practice ended.

Tuesday Aug 26

Running 43:07 [3] 5.43 mi (7:56 / mi)
slept:6.25 weight:160lbs
I was finally back at XC practice, and we had a pretty decent turnout (although only 5 or 6 girls). I went out after everyone and went State-Jackson-Ridge-Shoecraft. I saw some kids as they turned around, passed the girls about halfway and caught up to Adrian near the end. Adrian and I were gaining quickly on a pack of loafers, until three of them got into a foot race in the last 1/4 mi or so.

During the run, I threw in two 5-minute segments where I made sure I kept the stride rate at 160 or just above. I've got to remember to keep tossing those in.

Monday Aug 25

Running 31:18 [2] 4.17 mi (7:30 / mi)
slept:6.5
I drove over to MIT with Nate, parked near Simmons and did a loop around campus (Vassar-Main-Mem), back past the gym to see if we could see Coach Taylor (or Chelsea ;-) ). The team was still meeting, so after walking around the outside of Baker House (man, a lot of good memories of that place), we went back along the river to Cambridge St and the hotel (Nate couldn't go as slow as me along the river).

We got to hang out with Chelsea for a couple of hours before we had to hit the road. It's hard to believe she's gone. At least she is still posting on AP!

Orienteering race 3:09:53 [2] ***** 7.6 km (24:59 / km) +305m 20:49 / km

COC Champs - Long Course 9 and Fundy.

Well, after yesterday, I decided a different approach was in order. So, I was going to try to stay in contact with the map, even if it meant slowing significantly at times. I started out on the trail, found the cairn and headed into some thick woods, so I left my bearing, drifted way right and became lost. Luckily I pace counted diligently, knew I was right, and went left to the flag - nope the course 10 flag, but I knew where I was now.

C2 looked like a good challenge, and had an easy attackpoint at a stream bend. I managed to snake my way thru the gaps in the thick stuff (with some of the better detailed map reading that I've done) and cruise down the stream to the bend, with nothing but white between me and the control - on the map at least. In real life I find myself plowing thru some thick, albeit short, pines. At least the branches and needles were soft.

At this point I had enough of the vegetation. So, I went around on the trail to C3, I went around on the trail to C4 (falling badly on the trail and losing at least a minute recovering), I went around on the trail to C5. I tried to run around on the trail to C6, but I was too far left, and by the time I fought thru some nasty stuff to the trail, it was just about time to leave the trail (I had trouble finding the boulder, which was the only thing I could attack from). Finally, I used the trail to attack C7.

I walked to C8 on a bearing, then I ran around on the trail and road to C9.

I really liked the challenge of C10, 11 and 12. If I hadn't been quite so tired and beat up, I could have done fairly well thru this stretch. It involved some detailed map reading that was within my capabilities, and some physical effort thru an area of reasonable vegetation. I wish more of the weekend had been like this (perhaps this is what the Middle was like, if I had had the proper approach?).

C13 was a disaster. I started on a decent bearing, but after crossing the trail, the vegetation was nasty enough that I had to walk carefully. Just when I thought I was closing in, I saw a spur that looked like it had to have the control on the other side, but no. I wandered over to a very rocky area, but was not able to relocate (I still have no idea where I was, there does not seem to be any suitable spot on the map). I finally started to go north of east (to avoid going down the hill that I would have to reclimb) towards the trail, and saw the clearing which turned out to be the one mapped with the distinct boundary, leading me right to the flag.

C14 was fine - finally a patch of light green was readily visible in the terrain, and I was able to cruise thru it, popping right out at the rocks. I was overly conservative to C15, which meant extra climbing, and I had a hell of a time battling thru vegetation to get to the trail to C16.

Overall, I'm glad I made the trip up to the COCs. I think the boys enjoyed the trip, even if the orienteering wasn't our favorite. I should have read Wil Smith's tips about Fundy before the Middle - it may have changed my attitude and behavior - but it was hidden farther back in the [60 page] booklet than I read before the Middle. Oops. But I do strongly prefer courses where I am capable of running. I probably need to work on running in more adverse terrain, so I can handle white being rocky and/or thick-ish.

Saturday Aug 23

Orienteering race 2:06:00 [3] 3.6 km (35:00 / km)
COC Middle Distance at Fundy.

Pretty nasty race. I wasn't able to run through much of this course at all - there was too much thick stuff and too much trash to jump/step over or duck below. The visibility was too limited for my weak contour-reading skills and the vegetation is way too inconsistent to be usefully mapped. My bearing / pace attempts were not very good, since zig-zagging affects both, and stepping over stuff reduces the accuracy of pace counting.

So, I was lost a LOT. And relocating was nearly impossible for me, due to the same factors as above.

So, not a fun day at Fundy. Perhaps if I am ready for this sort of thing tomorrow, I can do better (I probably can't do worse, since I was OVT today).
Running warm up/down 22:00 [2] 2.5 mi (8:47 / mi)
Long w/up most of the way to the start, back to the car and to the start. The trip back to the car was a bit of a waste, since a) the boys never used the camera that I sent to the finish and b) I really don't need to warm up if I'm just going to walk around for 2 hours.

Friday Aug 22

Orienteering race 25:28 [5] *** 2.7 km (9:26 / km)
spiked:18/24c
COC Sprint at Fundy Park.

The first part of the course was fast running and I did pretty well, except losing a minute overrunning C8 and then finding the hidden control on the way back thru (need to either read the map more closely, or look at the clue sheet).

The last part of the course was thru some fairly thick woods and I didn't do so well. It was too dark for me to see the slope tags at C17, so I thought I was headed for a hilltop, but no. Lost over a minute there. I also lost a big chunk of time going to C23 - I should have come down to the trail immediately, knowing how nasty the woods were, and I ended up coming down anyway, in order to attack.
Running warm up/down 25:00 [2] 2.78 mi (8:59 / mi)
Got in almost 15 minutes before the race and over 10 minutes afterwards.

Orienteering race 14:38 [4] *** 2.2 km (6:39 / km)

Orienteering Rocks event at Hopewell Rocks.

Very cool sprint race on the ocean floor at low tide, when the water is some 35 feet lower (vertically!) than high tide.

The course was limited since there is a cliff that forces you to stay on the beach, and it had to be set as an out-and-back, but with all of the rock formations, it was still an interesting course in itself, and the unique terrain made it a great race. Sometimes it was tough to remember that the height of the rocks was not mapped, it was by size from the air. But I was getting the hang of things by the last 1/4 of the race. I need to get the hang of things from the get-go tomorrow.

I just cruised through, since it was just for fun, but still got the win in my age group - OK, so I was in the 45 to some incredibly old age, age group.

Nate was unable to compete because of his ankle, so he followed Luke around. Zach and Luke bookended the M12 results.

Wednesday Aug 20

Running 27:59 [2] 3.39 mi (8:15 / mi)
slept:5.75
Drove from Marblehead to Moncton, then got an easy run in around downtown Moncton.

Almost had an issue at the border, since they thought I may have been trying to kidnap the boys. Or, the border agent asked for a letter from Chris saying it was OK for the boys to leave the country. I guess that is not just required when the kids travel with others. Oops. It would have kind of sucked if we had been denied entry - I would have had to have left the boys with her and carried on alone, I guess.

I didn't have time to run during practice this AM, since 3 different people gave me 3 top priorities for my last day before our COC vacation.

Wanted to swim at lunch time, but there was no way to pull that off. But staying late last night and hustling today until 5 (had planned on leaving by 3:30) allowed me to make everybody happy.

Weight up significantly following Chelsea's going away dinner at the Cheesecake Factory last night - of course, it's the boys and I that are going away today; Chelsea doesn't leave until Friday.

Monday Aug 18

Running tempo 45:07 5.8 mi (7:46 / mi)
rhr:42 slept:5.75 weight:161lbs
First day of XC practice. I let the big boys go off on their own and I took the others out for 10 min w/up, 2 x 10 min @ tempo (2 min recovery), 10 min w/dn.

Trevor stayed close on the first one, Eric stayed close on the second one. Everyone went too quick early, as expected, and faded a bit.

We only had about 15 boys and 5 girls there today - not sure if 8-10am works very well for many, since there are not a lot of drivers on the team. There were about 10 additional recert forms turned in without a corresponding runner showing up, but I was expecting over 40 kids total.

Weight is cheating - it was post-run this AM.

Running race 20:27 [4] 5 km (4:05 / km) vdot: 48.5
OK, so Nate finally beat me in a 5K (it's about time). He had to win money to do it (although he has not accepted the money, since I'm not sure about NYS rules regarding cash awards for athletes).

Splits: 6:36, 6:32, 6:40, 38

I couldn't make the transition from running tempo pace to racing. I was alone by the mile mark, with no one close enough to catch in front of me, and no one pressing me from behind.
Running 46:51 [3] 10 km (4:41 / km)
The Rochester Christian School race also had a 10K, so I decided to run the course at marathon pace (~7:36 per mile) for a decent workout for the day.

Splits: 7:54, 7:31, 7:37, 7:31, 7:25, 7:20, 1:28

I passed Lonsberry about 1/2 mile in, then passed a few others by the mile mark and I was all alone the rest of the way.
Running warm up/down 16:00 [2] 1.85 mi (8:38 / mi)
10 min w/up, partly with Nate, partly with Chelsea; 6 min w/dn after the 10K.

The next time someone schedules a 12-12:30 meeting, I will say NFW.

I thought I could squeeze in a run before my 1:30 meeting, but 12:30 became 12:50 and I was done. I didn't get to the golf course until almost 5, so I barely made it home for the Bills kickoff.

Orienteering race 17:40 [4] *** 2.75 km (6:25 / km)

BFLO Sprint at Emery Park

I caught Luke at C1. Nate gave me a 2-minute head start, but I made mistakes early (took the road around left to C4 and drifted well right on the way to C5), so he was just behind me at C5. I held him off on the long run to to C6, but he out-sprinted me to C7. I followed him over to C8 and passed him on the way to C9 as I cut thru some nasty vegetation, going straight, and he went too far left. I blew by C10 at full steam, thinking it was across the bridge, when it was really before the stream, costing me nearly 40 seconds and Nate smoked me. Rob also got me by about a minute.

Orienteering race 51:33 [4] *** 6.44 km (8:00 / km)

BFLO Score-O at Emery Park.

Nate started off in the same direction as I did, and we hit 75 (after Nate realized he was no longer on a 1:5 map). We both went too far right to 72 and I recovered more quickly. I tried the field by the power line to 73, but it was too nasty, so I ducked back into the woods, which was full of unmapped blowdown, but I got a bit ahead of Nate, since he struggled thru the field. I lost the lead near the circle, since it was medium green, not white, protecting the flag. The field on the way to 74 had houses, so we ran the roads. It was too dark to read the low quality map's uncrossable fence blocking the field to 76, so I went around the end of the fence and grabbed 77 first. I lost sight of Nate leaving 76, but saw him near 78 - I took off up the road to 79 without seeing Nate, but he was coming out of the control when I cut in. We took separate, but equally brutal paths to 80. He went too far east, so I got there first. Leaving 80, the reentrant / stream was brutally steep, so we went east to the road (no easy going there).

Then it was the north side. Nate was ahead of me, but went up to the ski hill parking lot, while I cut in and closed the gap a bit going to 82. He stayed in the fields towards 84, while I cut thru some of the woods, but still couldn't catch up. I lost sight of him heading to 86, but he was still at the control, trying to figure out which square to punch as I closed in. I took the XC ski trail to the road and cut back into 87, and found I had almost caught Nate again. He took off towards 40 and I had a decision to make - it looked like time might be close and 40 was 300m away with enough junk on the map to pose potential difficulties, so I skipped it. Grabbed 41 quickly and loved the wooded section going to 43. I left 43 on a beeline for 45 via the tennis courts. I crossed the road and cut into the woods, looking towards the bridge, but no control, so I ran up the stream bank a bit before realizing there was no way it was that far from the road, ran back to the bridge and read the clue, saw the spur, climbed up and found the bag hanging against the tree (Zach never found it, preventing him from bagging all 10 south of the road).

I hustled in and wound up with almost 8.5 minutes left, which would have been more than enough time to grab 40 and give Rob a good run for 2nd place. As it was, Nate won by a couple of minutes, and I was 3rd (I think 13 controls was 4th).

I thought I was ready to put up a decent performance - I was getting used to reading the quality maps out here. Unfortunately, I made an enormous early blunder. On the way to C3, because of the way I folded the map, I started running towards C6, thinking it was C3. I guess the good news is that I spiked it, but when the code was wrong, I became thoroughly confused. I tried to relocate and headed back towards it, as Sandra came thru and punched - but when I got there, the code was still wrong. I looked down the clue sheet and saw the code and realized what I had done wrong. Very depressing, and then I had to run uphill to C3 to boot.

It was tough to stay motivated after a 10+ minute error, so I wasn't quite as quick as I should have been after that - too much walking up hills and even in sage.

Perhaps more comments when I have my map.

Ran nice and easy, walking when feeling like it on the uphills. This meant my navigation was quite clean, which gives me hope that I can read these maps on the weekend, at race speed.

There were a lot of people out in the terrain, but I did a very nice job of ignoring them and staying focused on the map. This came in particularly useful when I intentionally went the long way around on C6 (I think) and had to relocate as I closed in on the control - I didn't let other searchers affect my approach.

Not a good performance - I blew the 3rd control badly and Nate got ahead of me - he started towards C5, so I beat him to C4, then he passed me on the way to C5, where we both MSPd, punching at Zach's control instead. We couldn't figure out how it was so far from the control to the corner of the fence - now we know. We went our separate ways from there. I caught a couple of glimpses of Nate on the next 3 controls, but then took a sharp stick in the eye and that slowed me down as I tried to recover. Cristoff went zipping by while I was still stunned.

I also had trouble running the uphills, still. I hope that feeling is reduced (probably can't be gone) by Saturday.

Laramie Daze training course on the First With The Most map.

Took it easy, jogging most of it, but walking when I felt like it (guilt-free, since I should be tapering). Blew an early control pretty badly - the open areas look the same to me, so I went down the wrong field (which was even pointing the wrong way, so it wasn't technically a parallel error). Some father was teaching his son that he shouldn't be "dicking around" at the controls. I got distracted, and although I knew I just had to leave the control due north, after I had gone about 30m, I could not make sense of why I thought that - I kept looking at the wrong control and thinking that I had to head west, which made no sense, since I had just come from that direction. So, I "dicked around" for the better part of a minute, while they went on towards the next control.10

We didn't leave Omaha until 6:45am (CDT), so we arrived at the Happy Jack rest area just before 1pm (MDT). So, when we got up to the parking area, there was no sign of the junior training group. And no registration packets with our training maps. There was, however, a Swampfox that had an abundance of maps leftover from the One Man Relay this AM, so we were able to use those for a training session.

Nate and I started at the same time. His maps were 1-2-3 and mine were 3-2-1, so we ended up close together on the second loop, but he opened up a gap doing 3 while I was on 1 and finished a couple minutes ahead of me.

I had a fair amount of trouble running uphill. Not sure how much was leftover fatigue from the Mud Run versus altitude issues. In any case, I hope either issue is resolved by the weekend.

It was a good chance to reacquaint myself with the maps here. I used the thumb compass, which will not get it done for me in a real race out here right now.

Easy run in Omaha, where we stopped to spend the night. Here is the route. There was an incredibly annoying electronic noise coming from many of the trees in the area, presumably to ward off some sort of parasites.

It was tough getting out after about 15 hours in the car, and coming off last night's race. But I think it would be tougher tomorrow without a jog today.

Running race 24:45 [5] 6 km (4:08 / km) vdot: 48.6
29th Annual Mud Run in Boston, NY. I put forth the best effort I could after the two O races on Saturday. I was somewhat pathetic on the uphills. Fetch pulled ahead of me on the early hill and I gradually caught back up. I lost ground on the first two hills on the return trip, but made it back up on the downhills. Fetch didn't catch back up on the third hill and I saw Liquid Plumber up ahead, so I tried to close the gap on him, but wasn't able to quite catch him, although I did pass about 4 or 5 others on the last set of rolling hills.

I placed about 47th, which was good enough for 3rd in my [strange] 44-50 age group. One of the last people I passed was 2nd in the 36-43 group (PJ was 3rd), so chalk up another one for the old guys.

Nate won the 16-17 age group, finishing a bit behind Dan.

Chelsea struggled a bit in the women's race, and finished behind Patty, who won the 50-59 age group. Brenna ran pretty well, finishing a bit ahead of Morgan.

A bunch of people were on the DL: Walt, Huntz, Mick. Kevin O'Connor was there, but no sign of his old man. Coop and Sarah bailed out of town early.
Running warm up/down 33:00 [2] 3.67 mi (9:00 / mi)
After the girls started, I ran back into the woods and up the first trail, then along or parallel to the course until after the first field. I thought there used to be trail downhill in the next patch of woods, but I didn't see one, so I did some O training with no map and no compass, running thru the terrain, downhill parallel to a big reentrant. When I hit the course, I ran farther in and caught Chelsea, then ran back out. Did a bit more jogging before the start.

Afterwards, I did about 13 minutes easy with Chelsea, figuring it was important to get some crud out of my legs before sitting in the car all day tomorrow.

Sunday Aug 3

Running 28:02 [2] 3.25 mi (8:38 / mi)
slept:7.5 weight:160lbs
Very easy run in the local neighborhoods (Creek-Plank-Mt View-?-Woodfield and back home via Hitchcock and Witherspoon). My legs are quite beat up from yesterday, so it was a struggle just to get out, but I think I'll be better off tomorrow for doing it.

Weight was after running and eating a late lunch.

Golfing race 9:00 [1]
Played in the parent/child tourney with Zach. One 11-12 year old team shot a 40 (for a net 33), so we didn't stand a chance. I rarely shoot 40 or better using my own shots, and Zach gives up a few yards to me (but certainly not accuracy). We shot 57, with a lot of putts that should have been closer, but turned into 3-4 footers which were missed.

Event: ROC - Genesee Valley Park

Orienteering race 45:07 [4] *** 6.45 km (7:00 / km)
spiked:15/16c slept:7.0
ROC Score-O at Genesee Valley Park.

This was definitely a runner's course. After flipping the map over, it became clear to me that I should go north first, mostly to figure out whether I had time to get all of the controls (they were spread widely around the perimeter of the park), and to figure out whether to go clockwise or counter on the southern loop.

I got caught off-guard going to my first control (7) by the number of people running fast towards it, while I was out conservatively. I ended up punching behind Nate and Victor. Leaving the control, there was no sign of Nate, which was strange, since I only saw one option for leaving that control (going north). I did that loop uneventfully and made it back south of 390 in about 10 minutes, so it was clear that I could get all of the controls.

I skipped 8 on the way out, since I'd have to go almost right past it on the way in, and I decided to go counter-clockwise for the southern loop - for 2 reasons: it's be easier to get from 13 to the trail than vice-versa, and it looked like 15-16 was a much easier route than 16-15. On the way down the dead end road to 13, I saw Dan coming the other way, which had me worried, then I saw Nate pop out and punch 13, and was sure I was in trouble if Dan was ahead of Nate. That got me to pick up the pace a fair amount, not knowing that Dan was taking controls in a rather random fashion, and that Nate had lost several minutes leaving the first control, and trying to take the route along the river to the southern section of the park. The map did not show that the uncrossable fence went all the way to the river.

Leaving 15, I blew it by not checking that I crossed a creek before trying to follow the perimeter of some rough open land, looking for the trail leading out of there. I hit the creek and realized my mistake and had to bushwhack thru stuff that was over my head in places. My legs are still itching, a day later, from whatever was in there. And I lost 2-3 minutes. So, I ran pretty hard from 16 to the finish (grabbing 8 along the way), and managed to get Nate by a bit over a minute! And Dan didn't manage to see 16 on his map, so he missed that one.
Orienteering race 18:43 [5] *** 2.6 km (7:12 / km)
spiked:7/8c
ROC Sprint at Genesee Valley Park.

I'm calling this a 5 effort, although I was not going anywhere near 5K pace, with legs that were heavy from the Score-O. I did run about as hard as I could, though, as Chelsea (1 min) and Zach (2 min) started in front of me and Nate behind me (2 min, although I thought it was 1, until the results went up).

Leaving 2, I took the path thru the woods, while Chelsea and Zach stayed on the paved trail, so I was able to leapfrog them nicely. Chelsea stayed fairly close to me for the next few controls, but I opened up some space on the way to 6 (I think Nate caught her on that leg). I spiked 6, but came across the bridge thinking it was the bridge from the Score-O and looked right for the control. Things did not line up and by the time I had a decent look at the map, Nate was sprinting by to my left. I tried to keep up, but his legs are too young and he smoked me. Coming back from 8, Chelsea looked lost, but I guess it was just a temporary thing, as she had a plan for getting to 8.
Running warm up/down 22:30 [2] 2.5 mi (9:00 / mi)
Got about 8 minutes of jogging in before the score-o, 2 minutes before the sprint and 12.5 after the sprint (forced myself to go right out, before inertia had a chance to set in).

Sprint - Splits

Friday Aug 1

Running 29:45 [3] 4.0 mi (7:25 / mi)
Good ol' E-C-P, which it seems I haven't done in quite a while. I haven't had many chances to run at lunchtime lately. Tried to go nice 'n easy, but it was such a nice day, and there were enough people out, that I couldn't dog it.

My upper left calf was a bit tight before I started, and became an issue in the last 3/4 mile - pretty sharp pain with the left turn from Alexander onto East. It was only when I got back into the locker room that I realized that the painful spot was in the same place that I got the worst of my 3-4 (wasp?) stings yesterday near the 14th tee.

Splits (first 2 are about 0.9, last 2 are about 1.1):
Goodman - 6:41
to Culver - 6:49
to Goodman - 8:11
to the Y - 8:04
Golfing 9:00 [1]
Apparently Luke was looking forward to playing golf all day, so when I finally left work just before 6:30, I picked him up at Applebee's and took him out for 9 holes. I was awful overall (47), although I hit a whole bunch of very nice shots. I had a 4-putt for 6 on #3, 3-putt for 5 on #4 and a couple more 3-putts. Luke played from 150 yards, and I think was a 74, with a ton of putts.
