Strength (Snow Shoveling) 40:00 [1]

Clearing the 6+ inches that fell overnight. Solo, since I did it after dropping Nate off for 7am ski practice (which was curtailed, since the district wouldn't send a bus so they could travel to a groomed trail).

Swimming 40:58 [3] 1.14 mi (35:56 / mi)
slept:5.25

3:57/7:58
1:28,30,29,28,28,27
3:21,17

The first 500 would have been even faster if I didn't have to swerve to avoid some old guy who was basically floating in random locations and positions.

Tuesday Dec 30, 2008 #

Running 35:59 [2] 4.55 mi (7:55 / mi)
slept:8.0 weight:160.5lbs

Easy run over to the Y to drop off a check, so it's deductible in '08, and back via Yorktown (i.e. like this).

Strength (core) 3:00 [1]

I'm a wuss - 3 minutes was all that I could handle (25 sit-ups, then plank, and side crunches).

Note

Went over to the indoor meet at RIT (evening session). Zach didn't run until almost 10pm (and was alone for almost the whole race), so he was a little slower in the 1600 than last time (6:04). Splits:
43.5, 43.9, 44.4, 45.6, 48.6, 48.7, 46.3, 43.4

Monday Dec 29, 2008 #

Swimming 45:54 [3] 1.25 mi (36:43 / mi)

4:01/8:08
1:29,30,31,32,30,31 (1:55)
3:21,25,25

Went to Bayview and schedule was not the usual - only 2 lanes for lap swim, so I had to share a lane, which was tough to do with a very loose lane line.

Sunday Dec 28, 2008 #

Running 34:26 [2] 4.05 mi (8:30 / mi)
slept:6.75

Easy run around Emery Park with Chelsea and PJ, mostly on roads, but left the roads a few times to see the permanent controls that were nearby.

By the time we ran (just past 9:30am) it was about 40 degrees and raining (some hail, too) - down from just about 60 when we walked to church at 8am. And the wind was intense, but no trees fell near us (did see plenty of stuff down, though).

Saturday Dec 27, 2008 #

Running 30:42 [3] 3.93 mi (7:49 / mi)
slept:4.0 shoes: Peg ESC

Dropped Zach off at ESL for his second hockey game of the day and went for a run in the 50+ degrees that we had, as the sun was setting in late December! The MCC trails were too sloppy to attempt, so I ran the MCC loop to the correctional facility to 15A to the canal (west) for 16:01 and came back in 14:41, doing 3 x 1 minute quick turnovers (164, 172, 170) along the loop on the return trip.

Lack of sleep was due to leaving Philly just after 5:15 to get the boys home for hockey.

Friday Dec 26, 2008 #

Running 58:05 [3] 8.0 mi (7:16 / mi)
slept:7.0 shoes: Peg ESC

Did a marathon pace run with Nate (Chelsea started with us but had trouble breathing), from Chris's parents' house. Well, it was supposed to be a marathon pace (7:30) run, but Nate has trouble running that slow. So, we gradually picked up the first mile and went about 7:30, then averaged 6:46 for the next 3/4 mile, which included running down Black Rock Rd to the canal. Ran the canal into Yardley to the pre-determined 4-mile mark and returned. Canal pace was 7:10 - 7:30. Nate smoked me going up Black Rock (I averaged 7:44 from the canal back to the mile mark), waited for me and got 30 seconds ahead in the last mile (and I was 6:43 - a big kick, so that I came back in 28:59, after going out in 29:06, despite the hill).

It was over 40 degrees, so I wisely wore shorts this time.

The new shoes made me bleed.

Running 31:20 [1] 3.26 mi (9:37 / mi)
slept:5.5 weight:168.5lbs shoes: Peg ESC

Traditional Christmas morning run from Walt's house. No sign of the O'Connors or the Mick family, and Chelsea blew it off, so it was just Walt, Patty, Coop, Dan, Nate, Zach (making his debut) and me.

Here is the usual route.

Wednesday Dec 24, 2008 #

Running 1:05:31 [2] 7.71 mi (8:30 / mi)

Ran up to God's Country from Walt's house. Even though I know the hill on Blakeley keeps going and going after each curve, it still surprises me how long it is. Gmap says it's a 22+ contour climb over the course of about a mile. I was supposed to do a long run today, but I think this was a close enough substitute.

My pace was:
8:37 pace to Blakeley
9:36 up to Reiter
7:58 to Lapham
7:55 to Olean
7:52 home

The weather was awesome; the threatened rain did not materialize and the temp must have been in the 40s, so my nylon sweatpants should have been left behind.

Here is the route. I included the elevation profile for once, so I could see the climb.

Tuesday Dec 23, 2008 #

Note
slept:6.0 weight:166lbs (rest day)

Had to go into work today for a meeting at 8:30, ended up staying until 2. Left too little time to get out the door, with everything else that had to be done before heading to the track meet (Zach ran 12:20 for the deuce!), the Schroeder-Thomas girls hoops game (Schroeder was even worse than I expected, losing 30-23 - neither team managed 10 points in any quarter, and not because of their defensive prowess), and EA (arriving well past midnight).

Running intervals 47:05 intensity: (34:01 @2) + (1:20 @4) + (11:44 @5) 6.0 mi (7:51 / mi)
slept:6.25

Same workout as last Tuesday (2 x (4 x 1/4 w/ .15 mi recovery) w/ .25 mi. recovery)

Chelsea went over to the Y with me, but wasn't feeling well, so she just did the first 1/4. I was just a bit slower than last week, as my legs were feeling heavier and tighter. I wanted to quit after 6, but talked myself into doing the 7th, then the 8th.

Speed: 10.0, 10.2, 10.4, 10.4, 10.2, 10.2, 10.0, 10.0
Time: 89, 88, 86, 86, 88, 88, 90, 89
Rec'y: 88, 93, 92, 2:38, 93, 91, 92

Did 4 x 100m strides during the last 1/2 mile.

HR was 154 just after finishing - not sure what it peaked at.

Sunday Dec 21, 2008 #

Note
slept:4.25 (rest day)

Kind of a late night last night made it tough to get out for a run. Instead I got a brief nap in before the Bills game. And what a game it was!

Strength (Snow Shoveling) 25:00 [2]

Nate gave me a hand clearing the driveway from another heavy snow.

Saturday Dec 20, 2008 #

Strength (Snow Shoveling) 15:00 [1]

Enough for Chris to get her car out to take Nate to ski practice.

Running 44:24 [2] 5.09 mi (8:44 / mi)

Got out the door in 16 degree weather (fortunately, very little wind) this AM. Stayed on neighborhood streets for most of the run - saw almost no cars (except near Plank) until I was almost to Hatch on this route.

The going was very tough after yesterday's snowfall. I was barely under 5 minutes at the half mile mark, but I tried to push the pace whenever I was in an area that had been salted.

Note

Zach splits:
42.5, ?, 87.6, 43.9 (2:54)
?, 90.1, 47.4, 41.7 (5:53)

Friday Dec 19, 2008 #

Strength (Snow Shoveling) 30:00 [1]

Quite the snowfall today. Had to enlist Nate's help, but we finished up the whole drive in 30 minutes - not bad considering the 8 inches or so that we had.

Note
(rest day)

An unacceptable, 3rd-straight day off. Had to do errands and shopping until dark and I figured the Y was probably closed due to the storm, and I was WAY too wimpy to run outside.

Thursday Dec 18, 2008 #

Note
slept:4.25 (rest day)

Another rest day (well, not counting volleyball), as we drove to Boston and back to pick up Chelsea, and she refused to go for a short run while I was in town. That did allow us to get home by 5pm (after leaving just before 5am), so Grandpa did not have to drive from Buffalo to pick up the boys from various parts of Webster.

Volleyball 45:00 [2]

Our Xerox league championship game. This was the hardest I've played in a few years - neither team was truly Rec level, since there were plenty of ringers involved. We lost the first two games, then won the next two, and took an early 5-2 lead in the short 5th game (just to 15 instead of 25), but struggled and lost 15-10. No T-shirts for us. The match lasted over 1:45 in total, as there were actually some very good, extended points.

Wednesday Dec 17, 2008 #

Running 4:00 [2] 0.48 mi (8:20 / mi)
slept:5.5 (rest day)

Since it was my last real day of work this year, I was far too busy to do a workout. In fact, losers scheduled meetings for me from 10-1 and from 12-2. Have they never heard of the lunch hour?

I went straight from work to the Sabres game (lame performance against the Devils), but got an opportunity for a run when Walt left the game a few seconds early, while I stayed for the end. So, I ran and caught him just before the parking lot. I even mapped the route.

Running intervals 46:20 intensity: (11:30 @1) + (23:21 @2) + (11:29 @5) 6.0 mi (7:43 / mi)
slept:8.0

I pwned Chelsea tonight.

I was surprised I was able to get myself over to the Y after returning from Nate's ski meet (his relay was 5th behind HFL, Pittsford, HFL, Pittsford). I couldn't run during lunch since we had a review of last week's debacle in Chicago.

I did Chelsea's last workout, more or less: 2 x (4 x 1/4). I did take a little extra recovery (was supposed to be 1:15 between reps and 2:30 between sets), but I was using the treadmill, so the acceleration and deceleration was part of the "recovery".

speed: 10.2, 10.3, 10.3, 10.4, 10.3, 10.4, 10.5, 10.6
reps: 87, 87, 87, 86, 87, 86, 85, 84
recov: 95, 92, 91, 2:33, 89, 91, 79

Also, 1.5 mi w/up and about 1.4 mi w/dn

Strength (Snow Shoveling) 15:00 [1]

First shoveling of the year - time-boxed since I had to get to work.

Monday Dec 15, 2008 #

Note
slept:5.0 (rest day)

Today's schedule was completely full before the Bills game - starting with 7am hockey practice for Luke, where he was getting the opportunity to practice with goalie equipment, since he volunteered to work between the pipes next Saturday.

I ate too much at brunch to consider running after dropping Zach off for his hockey game, so Chris and I did some quick shopping before the game and the Bills were on TiVo delay right afterward.

How 'bout them Bills? JP better not take another snap for the team. I don't think I've ever been quite so angry about a game, as I was after JP rolled right on 2nd and 5, with Lynch fully in Beast Mode. Whoever made that call should not bother showing up for work - an immediate firing is called for, and Ralph must be senile if it doesn't happen.

Before the game, JP talked about making a highlight reel for other teams to see. He must believe in truth-in-advertising because this highlight reel will be complete with what may have been a triple-triple (3 INTs, 3 Sacks, 3 Fumbles). He had a chance to run a 4-minute drill (failed w/ sack and fumble returned for a TD), a 2-minute drill (failed - turned the ball over on downs after spiking it to stop the clock on first down and then refusing to throw downfield at all), and a 1-minute drill (failed - unable to do the math that says you can't get 75 yards in a minute by throwing behind the line of scrimmage).

Swimming 43:10 [3] 1.25 mi (34:32 / mi)
slept:7.0

4:01/8:05
1:30,31,32,31,30,28
3:25,20,19

Worked a little harder than the times indicated - a bit of a cold seems to have an impact.

Biking 23:00 [2] 6.87 mi (3:21 / mi)
ahr:120 max:127

Since I took yesterday off, I figured I had to make up for it a bit and jumped on the bike at the Y after the swim. It was immediately obvious that I hadn't done this in a while, as my legs were feeling heavy, quickly.

21 min of Manual-11 including 2 x 1-min level-10 breaks @ 89 rpm.

Skiing 1:07:55 [2] 7.0 mi (9:42 / mi)
slept:5.5

Nate had almost 3.5 hours between hockey games in Oswego, so we drove up to Winona State Forest to ski for a bit. We parked at Wart Rd and skied north, but there did not seem to be any recently-groomed trails. The road was not too bad (plenty of snowmobiles were on it), but it was thick and sluggish in places. Nate was less happy than me, since he's been spoiled with most of his skiing last year being at Bristol.

I went out 21 minutes to the road crossing, and continued on for 6:15 to a side road on the left (perhaps Van Wormer), turned around - 6:20 back across the road and 25:47 back to the lot, plus a detour of 8:30 out and back on what must have been Hawley trail (5:20 up and 3:10 back).

Nate was traveling between 50-100% faster than me, for the parts I could see him on the road. And that aligns with the tracks he was laying while skating - I was only covering half to 2/3 the distance with each stride.

Quite an assortment of trail users at Winona. The snowmobilers seemed friendly, rather than obnoxious like around here. And there was even a dog sled that came at me on Hawley. I don't know that I had ever seen one in operation.

slept:6.75 weight:166lbs

4:02/8:06

3:25,21,19

Arms a little heavy today. Also my back is still a bit sore from my collision a few weeks ago.

Thursday Dec 11, 2008 #

Running 52:42 [3] 7.0 mi (7:32 / mi)
max:146 slept:7.0 weight:165.5lbs

Marathon Pace session on the treadmill.

1 mi w/up from 7.0-7.5mph (8:16)
5 miles at MP, 8.0mph (37:18)
1 mile picking up to 8.5 during first 1/2, then holding there (7:08)

Pretty comfortable the whole time, gotta keep adding a mile each week.

Volleyball 30:00 [2]

VB playoffs. I played the first two games, we won. I sat out the third game, we lost, I played the fourth game, we won. Must be a coincidence.

Chris blew off the match to attend Nate's NHS ceremony, so I didn't get many decent sets. I hope she makes it to the finals next week!

Wednesday Dec 10, 2008 #

Note
slept:4.75 (rest day)

Getting stuck with a 12+ hour work day, with no lunch and missing the first 1+ periods of the Sabres game does not inspire one to get a workout done after 8:30pm.

In protest, I did not open my laptop at home last night, even though another action was due.

Tuesday Dec 9, 2008 #

Running intervals 46:56 intensity: (39:55 @4) + (7:01 @5) 6.0 mi (7:49 / mi)
slept:7.5 weight:165.5lbs

I'm a failure.

I tried to do Chelsea's workout from last week, but on a treadmill. It turns out I bit off more than I could chew. The workout was 3x400m w/ 1 min recovery; 3x300m w/ 45 sec recovery and 3x200m w/ 30 sec recovery.

After a 2-mile w/up, I did 3 x 1/4 mile (not a metric treadmill) at 10.2, 10.4 and 10.7 mph, which got me around in 88, 85, 84. Recovery was 62, 66, 65, but was tougher because it included most of the acceleration and deceleration between rep pace and 5mph recovery.

I did the 2 x 3/16 mile at 10.7 (62) and 10.9 (62), and started the 3rd at 11.2 but had to stop when it became clear that my legs couldn't handle the pace. I then did 1 x 1/8 mile at 11.2 (40), but couldn't recover in 30 seconds, so I gave up.

A little recovery brought me to 4 miles, and I ran 2 more, building up from 7mph to 8mph for the last half mile (8:11, 7:42).

I have to be tougher than Chelsea, if I'm going to out run her on Jan 10th!

Monday Dec 8, 2008 #

Swimming 44:11 [3] 1.25 mi (35:20 / mi)
slept:7.25

4:01/8:02
1:30,32,30,30,30,29 (on 1:55)
3:22,19,16

Solid workout - getting some feeling back for the water. Odd strokes are still very sloppy - I should break them down a bit again.

Sunday Dec 7, 2008 #

Running 1:10:16 [2] 8.07 mi (8:43 / mi)

Easy run from the rink after dropping Nate off for hockey practice. Due to the chilly weather and blustery winds, I figured it was a good day to run the Hojack trail, so I ran over to Hard Rd and picked up the trail to the end on the other side of Lake Rd, and returned to Hard. To avoid running into the wind on Publisher's Pkwy, I took the 104 bike path back to the rink - good choice as there was some protection from the wind.

I ran easy, but the pace was slower than I expected. The trail was just frozen ground, with just a dusting of snow, so I didn't think I'd lose time, but apparently I did.

Swimming 39:19 [3] 1.08 mi (36:24 / mi)
slept:7.0

3:55/8:00
1:26,31,31,30,30,29
3:21,19

Had to swim a little crooked on the 500, to avoid the wide ladder at the shallow end. First 100 was quicker since I started at the same time as a guy a few lanes over who went close to 1:20.

Orienteering race 40:00 [2] 2.67 km (15:00 / km)

ROC Scrooge-O at Camp Piperwood.

I'm not a big fan of Scrooge-O and when they created 4 scrooges, I was expecting the worst, so I wasn't disappointed. I got scrooged 3 times in the first 30 minutes or so (my watch didn't start when I hit it in a hurry), and the first time I accidentally gave my map away along with the punchcard, so I had to run back to the start for a new map. This is supposed to be a fun event, so I have to figure out how to relax and just enjoy it.

Friday Dec 5, 2008 #

Note
slept:5.5 (rest day)

No time at lunch (only about a 25 minute break between meetings). To hungry after work (left just in time to pick Z up from track at 6:30).

Thursday Dec 4, 2008 #

Running 53:41 [3] 7.16 mi (7:30 / mi)
slept:5.75

GTA, since it was my only likely chance this month (I'm going to the next two Wednesday night Sabres games and getting up before 5am is not fun after a late night, then it is Christmas and New Year's).

I tried to go to gmap and reproduce the route, but had to give up. I was not paying close enough attention to my surroundings and it was quite dark until we were almost done, so the switching between roads and connecting trails had me a bit confused. A few more runs down there will make it easier. So, the pace (and therefore the distance) is a guess. I stayed close the whole time, so the pace may have been a bit faster, but I think the darkness slowed folks down, as did the smaller group (just Erik, Frank, JV, Lawrence and Vinny).

Volleyball 15:00 [1]

The other team is usually bad. Tonight they were so bad that I feel guilty for logging any time, even though we only had 6 and the match dragged on for almost 75 minutes.

Chris and I did connect for some big hits about twice per game, so there was some fun.

(rest day)

No time to head to the Y during the day, and I had a "free" dinner at Mario's to attend after work - couldn't pass that up.

Monday Dec 1, 2008 #

Running 39:14 [2] 4.57 mi (8:35 / mi)
slept:6.5

Ran after dropping Zach off at hockey practice (dropping him off actually consisted of picking him up from track practice at Thomas and bringing him across the street to the rink). Just went out the back of the parking lot onto the 104 bike path for 20:15 and then back. That got me even with the U-Turn just before Bay Rd.

I was definitely hesitant going out in the dark. I was 9:06 pace over to Gravel Rd, about 8:36 turn the turn and picking it up a bit on the way back only got me to 8:17 pace to Maple and 8:04 pace from Maple to Gravel.
