US Team Trials, Long Blue.

A pretty fine effort, given the legs were a little tired going into this race. I had two errors that were too large, and some smaller stuff. The big errors were on C14 and C20. On C14, I had punched C13 just before Ted, but couldn't get up the hill as quickly as he did. I closed some of the gap running across the field, but the visibility was poor in the early part of the woods and I lost sight of him. I saw him again when my pace count said I was within 50m of the control, but I couldn't tell whether he had already punched and got distracted. Then some teenager started yapping at me, asking where he was. I said there was a field up the hill, go relocate. He kept pestering me and I got flustered and had to climb partway to the field to relocate myself, and came right down into the reentrant. He followed me to the control and again asked where he was. This allowed Ross to get in, punch and get out, without my being able to leave.

On the way to C20, I was distracted by a flag that was too early. I saw it was in a pit and saw a pit on the map, so I ran in the indicated direction. Oops, wrong pit - the flag was in the v, not in the u. So I got to run past Mike M the photographer 3 times - once to the wrong boulders, once to the correct spot, and then leaving the control correctly. It looks like I got a nice photo out of the deal anyway.

US Team Trials Sprint

What a disaster. I was not prepared for such detailed map reading on a campus sprint. My two previous efforts (NAOC at Macmaster and the Flying Pig at Miami Ohio) just required fast running and mostly rough reading, and that's how this one started out. My first problem came at C7 where I didn't see the obvious route to the right, got in front of the building, tried to go around to the left and got trapped by the impassable wall - had to go around the other way - there goes 1.5 minutes. I lost time on C10 by taking the stairs down from C9, and then lost about 45 seconds on C11 by running too low first, then going to C12, thinking I could make it between the buildings (but it was all one building). C14 was the gaffe of the day - I crossed over the road that is north of 14 and wasn't able to relocate until I was in the parking lots north of C17 - an error of about 2 minutes. I then turned around and blew C17 to the tune of 1 minute - not reading the map properly until the control was not behind the air conditioning unit.

The only good news is that I was able to run fast when I wanted to.

Running warm up/down 20:00 [2] 2.22 mi (9:00 / mi)

Jogged where I could on the way to the start, which wasn't a whole lot considering that it took 45 (2.5m) contours to get there (not counting the couple that we gave up on the way). Did some more jogging and strides near the start.

Afterwards, Nate and I mostly jogged the shortcut back to the start to see Zach off, then jogged back down to the finish.

Golfing 18:00 [1] ***
spiked:5/18c (rest day)

I'm not 100% sure that this will be a rest day; I hope to do some light jogging.

Shot a 90, thanks to a quadruple-bogey on 13 (started off in the water - not sure when that last happened). My putting was again atrocious. Only 35 putts (thanks to some fine chipping - lipped the hole twice), but on 11 holes I made putts from 0 or 1 feet, and 3 more were from 2 feet. I'm getting the distance mostly right, it's the "yips" or whatever is causing my club face to come off line.

Swimming 38:00 [2] 1.02 mi (37:15 / mi)
slept:5.25 weight:166lbs

4:06/8:25
1:30,35,35,36,36
3:39,32

My legs wanted a day off from running, so I just coasted thru a swim today.

Golfing 9:00 [1] ***
spiked:1/9c

Not a good opening day of the golf league - put up a 46. The windy conditions certainly didn't help, but the lack of concentration was equally to blame.

Running 58:00 [2] 6.1 mi (9:30 / mi)

Jogging around during the Dirt Cheap trail race at Webster Park. I would have jumped in, but I was sure I wouldn't run as easily as I should, with the Team Trial races (vs. Nate) coming up this weekend. It's not often that I get to cheer for runners other than the teams I coach.

Time and pace are estimates. I did pretty well starting and stopping my watch, but nowhere near exact. I was out for 70 minutes plus a couple jogs to and from parking, but stopped to spectate a few times.
