Orienteering race 3:05:00 [3]*** 12.15 km (15:14 / km)
spiked:10/12c slept:5.0
BFLO Mini-Rogaine at Ellicottville Ski Area / State Forest.

With the heat, I figured I could wear myself out in 3 hours, so I didn't sign up for the 5 hour option. I grabbed C2 quickly, then went after C12, but I guess I left the road at the wrong stream (even though there was only one on the map) and followed if farther than I should have, distracted by others, including Walt and Brig on the same stream. Finally cut over to the east and followed another stream down. Apparently I didn't learn my lesson there, because on the way to C13, I found a stream (only one was on the map, and no other reentrant was visible on the map - turns out the contours are definitely overly-smoothed on this 1:20K map) and followed it to a clear end, but no flag. I bailed to the east and actually stumbled on the flag - not at a stream end, and not really in much of a reentrant.

I ran down and got C20, after spotting the proper reentrant on the way down the hill. C24 was very clean. Here I made a big mistake. I chose to play it safe and run the trail all the way back up to C6. When I got home, Nate pointed out how stupid that was, and I had to agree, since I ran back past C6 later on, and it was a long way around getting to C21 (although it was almost all trail). I did pick up C18 on the way to C21, although that was not my original plan, it just seemed to inviting along the way.

I had to skip C25, and picked up C19, but lost some time. I planned on skipping the water, so I cut in to the newly mapped trail, but I got confused at the junction, so I had to step out near the road anyway (but did not find the water in the field!), to get a proper read on the trail that led to C19. I went all trails to C27, and knew it was time to head back, starting with a serious climb.

I aimed for C17 on a bearing, thinking I would do a fly-by and hope to get lucky. It turned out I got a good location crossing the road, and continued on, spotting an unmapped reentrant before I got to the trail above 17 and guessed that it would turn into the mapped stream below the trail, and it did and the flag was mine. I continued running alongside the stream to the trail and grabbed C10, and it was time to hustle back. I stayed on the trail past C6 and at the end, I tried to go just south of west to the dirt road and in, but I hit a trail instead, right near a junction. The way I wanted to go turned and sent me the wrong way and I got confused. Eventually I just ran down something that was going mostly south, hit a dirt road which turned out to be N of where I thought I was, and couldn't make the 3-hour limit, although I hustled back quickly downhill.

Since I was 5 minutes late, and I figured the penalty was 1 control per minute, I decided to switch to the 5-hour category, but that's what they already had me signed up for. It turned out the penalty was just 10 points per minute, and I had 540, so I could have scored 490. Instead...

... I grabbed a Blue and walked up to C11, then grabbed another and walked over to C1. Saw Walt and Brig approaching, so I checked in, just in case they had as many points as me (590 now), but they just had 380. No one else had any serious points, but there was still 1 person out when the rain chased us on out of there.

Easy swim, since tomorrow may be quite a challenge.

I'd better go get something to drink.

Thursday Jun 5

Running 51:23 [4]7.15 mi (7:11 / mi)

Well, it was back to GTA this AM, finally, for just over 7 at just over 7 by 7. Here's the route. I was able to hang on a little closer and a little longer today, than before track season. At least part of that is being in slightly better shape. The biggest gap came in the last mile and a half, after I made one last downhill surge on Highland to try to close the gap, and was toast after that (only averaged 7:24 for the little over 1.25 miles along Highland and thru to Elmwood).

Good turnout this AM: Erik, Scott, JV, DV, Lawrence, Darren, G2, Vinny and a woman that came with Greg and kept up, even when Darren, Vinny and I dropped back (Scott is still facing some difficulty after last weekend). And Sue, Shannon and Alexis ran together.

Awful round for the league - put up a 48 on the back, nothing was working except the 4-wood, which I only got to use three times (the par 5s and 17th tee).

Got roped into playing in the Thursday night scramble afterwards. It was great fun, and I hit the ball much better (a well-oiled swing may have helped). Got to hit driver on 4 (always a 4-wood in normal play) and crushed it, with a draw, almost to the cart path next to the green. I went over the tree on the corner of the slight dogleg on 6, hitting the center of the fairway at 135 yards (so, 270 yards, slightly uphill). Did my share for the team and we were 4-under, but 6-under won it.

Wednesday Jun 4

Running 43:55 [3]5.3 mi (8:17 / mi)
rhr:44 slept:4.75
Ran over to meet Scott at the Square, but he wasn't ready, so I did a 5 min loop and returned. We ran the East-Culver-Park loop very easy, since he is still recovering from his Adventure Race in PA last weekend.
8:02 - ahead of time
7:41 to Goodman
7:15 to Culver
9:09 back to Good
9:33 back to X2
2:12 to the Y

Ahh - Summer in the City. While I looped past Main and Clinton, waiting for Scott, there were a couple of dudes handcuffed to a railing, receiving some advice(?) from the police. We saw a tinted-windows SUV pulled over as the driver yapped on a cell phone. And leaving Midtown after grabbing some BK to go, security was, unsuccessfully, attempting to rouse a "gentleman" from his "nap" on a bench near Brad's.

And my official boss and the rest of my old group just moved out to Webster this week, while I have to move to an awful new open floor plan at the Square at the end of the month.

Doubled 9 for a 41. Combined with 42 for the back on Monday, gives me an 83 in GHIN. Now I need to do that in one day.

Things went well, even after problems (trees on 1, hit it to 1 foot from 113 yards; made a 50' putt on 4 from off the green, after squandering perfect tee shot; made a breaking 9 footer on 8 to salvage a bogey from the sand).

Tuesday Jun 3

Running 39:47 [2]4.82 mi (8:15 / mi)
From Luke's T-Ball game at Town Hall Park. Did some running around the trails, meandering toward Jackson then did a couple of loops in the 1000 Acre Swamp, and cruised back as the top of the 3rd was about to end. They played the first 3 innings in about 45 minutes, then switched to the pitching machine and the last 3 innings took over 80 minutes. Part of the delay is each pitch takes longer than hitting off the tee and there are more attempts required (limit of 3 per batter before switching to a tee), but most of the delay seems to be that throwing the ball back to the pitcher after each hit takes longer than throwing to the catcher (who has a backstop behind him, instead of another player to make another bad throw).

There was an outside event at the club, so I couldn't go off until 6pm. The good news is that I got off first and finished the back 9 in 69 minutes, while shooting a 42. The other good news is that I am no longer afraid of putting - only 16 putts today.

Sunday Jun 1

Note
rhr:48 slept:5.75 weight:164.5lbs (rest day)
Went down to Addison for Tim's baby's baptism. It was in conjunction with 4 other infants that are her cousins - I've never seen so many related babies baptized at once, but there are about 15 kids in Cynthia's family, and she is about in the middle. A lot of grandparents these days don't wind up with 5 grandchildren, let alone 5 within a few months!

I thought about a run with Nate thru the woods in the hills behind Tim's house, but I was too hungry by the time we got there.
