| Orienteering race 2:06:00 [3] 3.6 km (35:00 / km) | ||
| COC Middle Distance at Fundy.
Pretty nasty race. I wasn't able to run through much of this course at all - there was too much thick stuff and too much trash to jump/step over or duck below. The visibility was too limited for my weak contour-reading skills and the vegetation is way too inconsistent to be usefully mapped. My bearing / pace attempts were not very good, since zig-zagging affects both, and stepping over stuff reduces the accuracy of pace counting. So, I was lost a LOT. And relocating was nearly impossible for me, due to the same factors as above. So, not a fun day at Fundy. Perhaps if I am ready for this sort of thing tomorrow, I can do better (I probably can't do worse, since I was OVT today).
| Running warm up/down 22:00 [2] 2.5 mi (8:47 / mi) | ||
| Long w/up most of the way to the start, back to the car and to the start. The trip back to the car was a bit of a waste, since a) the boys never used the camera that I sent to the finish and b) I really don't need to warm up if I'm just going to walk around for 2 hours. | ||

| COC Sprint at Fundy Park.
The first part of the course was fast running and I did pretty well, except losing a minute overrunning C8 and then finding the hidden control on the way back thru (need to either read the map more closely, or look at the clue sheet). The last part of the course was thru some fairly thick woods and I didn't do so well. It was too dark for me to see the slope tags at C17, so I thought I was headed for a hilltop, but no. Lost over a minute there. I also lost a big chunk of time going to C23 - I should have come down to the trail immediately, knowing how nasty the woods were, and I ended up coming down anyway, in order to attack.
| Running warm up/down 25:00 [2] 2.78 mi (8:59 / mi) | ||
| Got in almost 15 minutes before the race and over 10 minutes afterwards. | ||

| Orienteering Rocks event at Hopewell Rocks.
Very cool sprint race on the ocean floor at low tide, when the water is some 35 feet lower (vertically!) than high tide. The course was limited since there is a cliff that forces you to stay on the beach, and it had to be set as an out-and-back, but with all of the rock formations, it was still an interesting course in itself, and the unique terrain made it a great race. Sometimes it was tough to remember that the height of the rocks was not mapped, it was by size from the air. But I was getting the hang of things by the last 1/4 of the race. I need to get the hang of things from the get-go tomorrow. I just cruised through, since it was just for fun, but still got the win in my age group - OK, so I was in the 45 to some incredibly old age, age group. Nate was unable to compete because of his ankle, so he followed Luke around. Zach and Luke bookended the M12 results.
Wednesday Aug 20 | ||
| Running 27:59 [2] 3.39 mi (8:15 / mi) | ||
| slept:5.75 | ||
| Drove from Marblehead to Moncton, then got an easy run in around downtown Moncton.
Almost had an issue at the border, since they thought I may have been trying to kidnap the boys. Or, the border agent asked for a letter from Chris saying it was OK for the boys to leave the country. I guess that is not just required when the kids travel with others. Oops. It would have kind of sucked if we had been denied entry - I would have had to have left the boys with her and carried on alone, I guess.

| Note | ||
| slept:5.5 weight:164lbs (rest day) | ||
| I didn't have time to run during practice this AM, since 3 different people gave me 3 top priorities for my last day before our COC vacation.
Wanted to swim at lunch time, but there was no way to pull that off. But staying late last night and hustling today until 5 (had planned on leaving by 3:30) allowed me to make everybody happy. Weight up significantly following Chelsea's going away dinner at the Cheesecake Factory last night - of course, it's the boys and I that are going away today; Chelsea doesn't leave until Friday.
Monday Aug 18 | ||
| Running tempo 45:07 | ||
| rhr:42 slept:5.75 weight:161lbs | ||
| First day of XC practice. I let the big boys go off on their own and I took the others out for 10 min w/up, 2 x 10 min @ tempo (2 min recovery), 10 min w/dn.
Trevor stayed close on the first one, Eric stayed close on the second one. Everyone went too quick early, as expected, and faded a bit. We only had about 15 boys and 5 girls there today - not sure if 8-10am works very well for many, since there are not a lot of drivers on the team. There were about 10 additional recert forms turned in without a corresponding runner showing up, but I was expecting over 40 kids total. Weight is cheating - it was post-run this AM.
