Running race 2:36 [5] 0.8 km (3:15 / km)

Raced 800m for the first time in I don't know how long. Perhaps the last time was at the Greater Boston Championships at Harvard in February 1984 (where I was thrown in at the end of a 4x800 relay, to replace a sick teammate and ran 2:00, which was just fast enough to hold on to 3rd, fighting off Harvard's anchor).

This time I was a lot slower, but fast enough to beat Chelsea's time from the women's race. I went out a little too quick (although at the 400, I thought I had 2:30 in the bag) and was shocked at how my legs turned to rubber on the last lap - I felt like I might fall.

Bill Phipps, a Sutherland grad, I think, won the race in 1:58, so I safely avoided being lapped, coming thru 600m in 1:53.

Splits: 36, 37, 40, 43

My calf was fairly sore after the race; I think I'll lay off the speed work for a bit. But I do think I can get a fair amount faster with some more work (so, look out next year, Chelsea).

Note
(rest day)

Travel day (after leaving work at 1:30) - up to Marblehead for the night - ahead of tomorrow's Alumni Meet in Cambridge. Arrived just after the Sabres game started on TV, but Coop delayed the start for me.

Swimming 34:39 [3] 1.02 mi (33:58 / mi)

3:58/8:05
1:29,29,29,30,30,31,27 (on 1:50)
3:26,22

Not bad considering I totally cruised thru this 9pm workout (well, I pushed the last 100 a little, but I had more left).

My left calf has remained tender today. I hope it can survive 800m on Saturday.

Note
(rest day)

Wanted to at least get a swim done, but work got in the way.

Running intervals 32:23 intensity: (5:28 @1) + (24:20 @2) + (2:35 @5) 4.0 mi (8:06 / mi)
slept:6.25

A final tune-up for Saturday's race in Cambridge.

2 x 1/4 mile @ 11.5mph on the treadmill with 1/4 mile @ 5mph recovery

That meant I ran 77 on the first, 78 on the second (started acceleration a bit later on the second). I was going to toss in some 200s as well, but my left calf was a bit tender, and, as they say, discretion is the better part of valor. So, now begins my taper for my biggest indoor meet of the season. I just hope I don't get lapped in the 800!

1.5 mi w/up (12:15); 1.5 mi w/dn (12:05).

Note
slept:6.0 (rest day)

No time at lunch and I had to go straight from work to a meeting where we (mostly Rick) tried to convince the Webster open space committee that some new town parcels adjacent to Webster Park should be mapped (and used for competition). The most interesting area is the one where they (well a couple of committee members) do not seem to want any off-trail activities.

Swimming 46:30 [3] 1.31 mi (35:30 / mi)
slept:5.75 weight:164lbs

4:00/8:05
1:29,28,30,31,30,32,31 (on 1:50)
3:25,25,23

Hashing 40:00 [2] 4.0 mi (10:00 / mi)

A relatively short hash from Winton, near Browncroft - thru the city with one stop at someone's house that actually backs to some (abbreviated) woods off Merchants (I guess several neighbors bought a parcel to prevent a collection of duplexes from being built). Another stop was located at the playground near Tryon Park, which we did not enter.

The trail was not finger-licking good.
