Golfing 9:00 [1]
spiked:2/9c (rest day)

Way better than last week. Shot 42, which included a fairly poor short game (highlighted by a 3-putt bogey).

Note
(rest day)

My toe wanted no part of exercise, so a good excuse for a lazy day off.

Orienteering race 1:15:09 [3] *** 7.5 km (10:01 / km)
14c slept:7.5

ROC Club Series race at Letchworth West

What can I say? Lots of problems. Very unprepared. Toe is painful.

I was only a little slow to C1, but Nate caught up to me just after the control. Going down the hill, I grabbed a small tree to slow/steady myself and my SID card popped off - I had not tightened enough. I lost about 2.5 minutes locating it. After punching and leaving C2, I realized I had not really tied my shoes and 1.5 were undone already. I lost 45 seconds retying with a double knot. I overran C4 and hit the trail, but didn't believe it, so wasted some time.

Way too far left on C6, but recovered nicely. Careless reading of the map made me think C8 was on an elongated spur - didn't notice the closed circle under the control circle - had to relocate at the spurs near the trail when I didn't see any spur. Fell twice on the way to C9, the first time I actually managed to knock the wind out of myself. Pretty good after that.

I think the toe is sore enough to make me doubtful for the Billygoat. I feel a new point of pressure on the bottom that makes me think it is not yet improving. I still can't bend it at all.

Running (Control Pick-up) 14:50 [2] 1.7 mi (8:45 / mi)

Picked up just one control - the others had all been spoken for. Nate got 2 and Zach and Joe got 4.

(rest day)

Spent an hour waiting at the DMV, amongst the criminals who kept being told they had to pay their civil penalties and get some sort of driving certification before they could get their licenses back, to get the Mustang back on the road, only to find out I needed Chris's signature and a copy of her license. At least the mobile station is in Webster on Monday...

Plan was to squeeze in a run during the invitational at Hilton, but there was just enough to do and see that I didn't have the time, until it got cold and started to rain a bit.

Nate and two Thomas kids got dissed and overlooked for the Runner of the Year heat of the 3200, so they wanted to put up a good time in the losers' heat, and that they did. They ran together for 7 laps, then kicked and Nate finished between the two in 10:07, a 15-second PR. Only 8 of the 15 kids in the "Premier" heat beat Nate.

Hashing 1:15:00 [2] 6.25 mi (12:00 / mi)
slept:6.25

Quite an awesome trail set by Fetch from near the Fairport baseball fields. Early on, he had a nice swamp crossing, wehre the water may have been only up to my waist, but since my legs sunk into the muck on the bottom, it went up to my chest. I had doubts in the middle about whether my legs would make it out.

That was balanced by a wonderful piƱata stop, with a decorated styrofoam cooler hung from a branch that was broken, sending down a cascade of beverages.

There was a long run back to the start, but we'll let that slide.

OK, so I was good yesterday, getting in a run during Zach's soccer practice. Today, I was not. I was trapped at work longer than planned and got to the track meet just a few minutes before it was underway. I stayed pretty busy during the meet (the Gates hurdle crew was non-existent - too busy talking about their lost classmate, perhaps).

I may have been able to sneak in a run after the 4x800 relay (I tried to make three even teams, but two outperformed and one underperformed, so at least it was very exciting watching Vanzo come oh-so-close to catching Justin), but by then I was too cold and hungry to do so.

Map Run 1:07:57 [2] 7.77 mi (8:45 / mi)

An easy jaunt thru Webster Park, since Zach had soccer practice up there from 6-7:30. I parked at the lot on the east side of Holt and ran with a map that I grabbed on the way out of the house. I couldn't find the Permanent Course map, which turned up in the car, AFTER the run, but that was OK, because I got to try to find as many permanent controls as possible, from memory, and I managed to grab 20 of the 24. I forgot about #3 (I think), which is very close to the intersection NW of the missing control on the hilltop on the west side of the map. I also forgot about the one in the junk west of a clearing, and I got the one next to the west parking lot on Lake, but forgot there was one south of that. And there was one on a hilltop, that I guessed wrong about and went to the wrong hilltop (too far east).

I ran almost the entire time (slowly, to be sure - just not in a couple of heavy, wet deadfall areas), but it was a heck of a lot more fun than just going out and running the roads (I could not have done that for an hour today).

Oops, empty image!

So, it was nice to visit with Chelsea last week, but I'm not sure what kind of "education" she is getting while living on Burton Third. The Tech reported this. And they made the local news.
