Running 30:19 intensity: (17:19 @2) + (13:00 @3) 3.83 mi (7:55 / mi)
slept:7.0

Ran from Hyde Park in Niagara Falls after dropping Zach for his game. Here is the route. Ran with nate for almost 2 miles, before he got bored of my pace (although it was sub-7:30). He went a little farther and turned around, while I ran down business 62 to 19th St, and returned.

Zach's team played undisciplined and uninspired in a 4-0 loss - I think it was scoreless after one before their sloppiness really set in.

Running 58:54 [2] 6.5 mi (9:04 / mi)
slept:6.0

On the way to the Alden Bulldog Stampede, I stopped at Darien Lakes State Park - parking in the Sumner Rd lot. I followed the Conservation Trail south thru the park and across Rt 20, until the 30 minute mark, which came just after I crossed the RR track, made a wrong turn and corrected.

The park had a bunch of signs that said "State Park - No Hunting No Trapping No Carrying Guns". A little over a mile into the run, I came upon a guy on his cell phone, with a shotgun over his shoulder and the barrel in my direction (he redirected it when he heard me). I did not know it was gun season already, and I also did not know that the signs were meaningless. After crossing Rt 20, I heard a shot to my northeast, and decided it might be prudent to return on the roads. I heard several more shots as I went north past the park, and saw a sign directing hunters to "register here" for permits - I guess to hunt in the park.

Running 1:15:00 [2] 8.75 mi (8:34 / mi)

Running around during the Bulldog Stampede Invitational in Alden, wearing the Garmin. It will be interesting to see whether this mix of quite a few miles, but with breaks to coach between races and cheer during races, but with some very fast running to get between certain points on the course will turn out to be useful as long runs for marathon training.

Our JV Boys were up first, and despite the top 3 going out much too fast, we were able to hang on for the victory. The guys who started out 4-5-6 did a great job of staying calm despite being trapped back too far, and moved up steadily for the win.

Only 2 JV girls.

The Varsity Boys were facing St. Joe's, who we beat at McQuaid, and 15 other teams from the Buffalo area. I was nervous early as our top 3 were back in 15th-20th, well behind a couple of St. Joe's kids and 4 kids from Lockport, but Lockport soon faded and our guys moved up thru the field and were in good position going into the woods. We ended up beating St. Joe's by 19, for the win! And this despite losing several points in the final straight in deference to our big meet on Tuesday.

Last up were the Varsity Girls. A big disappointment here, before the race, as we only managed to line up 3 girls. So, on the day, only 5 of our 21 girls were able to run. One girl has quit, one has sort of quit because the play is getting busier, the PSATs took three, leaving 11 girls that "chose" not to run. Several are in various states of "injury" (injuries seem to knock girls out of practice/races much easier than boys), some legitimate, some not. And a couple had to go on college visits, which I would normally accept as a valid excuse, but the "visit" was to Geneseo. I think another time could have been scheduled, or it could have been done on the way to or from Alden. In fact, this was the worst Saturday to go, since our former runner that is there, was off to Boston to compete in the Head of the Charles.

Well, now that I got that off my chest, the race itself went quite well. Val went thru the mile in under 6:10, in 10th place, fell back to about 15th with 1200m to go, then fought back and finished 9th. And our third girl (normally 10th or 11th) had a great PR, even beating her [3 mile] McQuaid time by 22 seconds (in a 5K).

Running 30:30 [2] 3.59 mi (8:30 / mi)

Very easy run during practice at Webster Park. Caught up to some of the youngsters and ran with them.

Running intervals 1:15:37 intensity: (20:30 @1) + (33:00 @2) + (22:07 @5) 9.8 mi (7:43 / mi)

I got to do a double-workout, since I had to host two practices today.

First, we had the usual practice at Webster Park. I did a 10 min w/up (and 10 min w/dn) and 3 x (600, 400, 200) with recovery of 3 min, 2 min, 2min. We did the 600m loop on the course, from just before the two mile mark, the usual 400m loop around the tennis courts and 200m on the second half of that loop.

2:17, 90, 43
2:15, 91, 43
2:16, 88, 41

Then it was off to Thomas to meet the mathletes, for their post-game workout. They did the same workout, but on the track since it was getting dark rapidly. I jumped in for the first two sets, but decided it might be dangerous to do the third, as my legs were feeling a bit strange.

2:13, 86, 41
2:13, 88, 42

I was able to finish ahead of Zach on several - not sure if it is my fitness improving, or his sore heel.

w/up was a little over a mile, w/dn was limited to jogging around the track during the guys' third set. We jogged recovery of 400, 200, 200 (although I had to shortcut a bit).

Easy run at Webster Park during practice.

Running 1:01:15 intensity: (41:15 @2) + (14:00 @4) + (6:00 @5) 8.0 mi (7:39 / mi)
slept:6.0

Running around before, during and after the XC meet at Black Creek Park. We got crushed by HF-L, 23-32, but it was actually a lot closer than that (25-30 just a few feet before the finish line, and I think we were actually ahead near the middle of the race). Still, we have made it to 17-2, so a very good season so far. Nate outkicked everyone except his teammate, so that was good to see.

Before the team arrived, I ran with the O Map a bit, but not too long, since I couldn't leave work until past 3, and I wanted to make sure I was around after the bus arrived. The map needs a bunch of work. There are buildings that have been up for several years that are not on the map, and the vegetation mapping has to be changed significantly - e.g. the area west of the former model plane area is now rough open, not whatever the map shows. Many of the trail sides that show dark green are passable, while many that are impassable are mapped white or light green. The XC course trail has a line of brush between it and the road that is not shown on the map, and the parking lot does not back directly into dark green.

A lot of running during the two races, since there is a chance to see much of the race from a distance if you follow along inside their route.

After the meet I did another 14 minutes while waiting for the results, sadly I did not bring the map, but I did a bit of terrain running after taking a trail that has become partially submerged.

Note
slept:7.0 (rest day)

No time to run during XC practice at 8am, since I needed to get to work by 9. I ended up leaving work just in time to beat the skyway closing at 8pm. I hadn't had lunch, so I was really not interested in postponing dinner for a run. I should be able to get some extra running done tomorrow, since I will be driving to the meet early, instead of taking the bus.
