Running 37:00 intensity: (22:08 @2) + (14:52 @3) 4.7 mi (7:52 / mi)
slept:5.5

So, nate and I drove down to check out Day 2 of the State Meet in Vestal. What a day it was! Jared Rousell (from Webster Thomas) opened things up by stunning everyone and beating Alex Deir in the second heat of the Steeplechase. His time was quick enough that only 1 kid from the "fast" heat beat him and he finished 2nd in the state!

Brycen did enough to win the Federation Championship in the 400, running "just" 47.9. There was a lightning delay that gave him some extra recovery before the 4 x 800 relay. Before the delay, Kevin Enck ran a PR in the 1500, and wound up 7th overall in the Pentathlon. As the delay was ending, I snuck out for a run, mostly on the Vestal rail trail.

The 4 x 8 was excellent. We were seeded 12th, which put us in the fast heat (the top 18 were included). Nico started out in last, coming thru the 400 in 60.27, before going to work and passing guys, moving all the way up to 4th by the end, in 1:57.53. Ben took over and held 4th most of the way, going out in 57.81. He hung on to just break 2 minutes and kept us in about 8th. AJ, who has been sick, moved steadily up, going out in 55.87. He came back in 61.35, to hang on pretty well, but Alex Deir passed him in the home stretch, and we were in 6th or 7th. Brycen took the baton and immediately blew by Steve Mangan and into 5th place. He came thru the 400 in 54.49. The next 200, he faded a bit and Mangan and Burnt Hills caught him, but he took off like a shot with 200 to go, and almost caught 4th place from 5? seconds down, before finishing in an incredible 1:52.55! 5th place for the good guys! And 7:47.76 was the official time - close to the Section V record of 7:45.5, which still stands from 1975.

Brycen wins states! And in a Section V record time: 46.81.

Results are here.

Full State meet results are here.

AJ had a rough outing, but Kevin is 6th in the Pent after Day 1.

Running 47:33 intensity: (41:16 @2) + (6:17 @4) 5.85 mi (8:08 / mi)
slept:6.75 weight:163lbs

Ran from home to pick up nate's car from the pre-ball party location, since they are taking the bus from there. This is roughly the route.

I was just going to run straight there, but Dick hit the Glen Edith hill the other day, and I hadn't done much in two days, so I decided to try a couple of hills. I'm not sure what the official "hill" is, so I went to the bay and looped around and decided the hill started at the telephone pole just below where the stream crosses, so I ran from there to the stop line. I was "scared" of the length the first time, so I was 11 seconds faster on the second one.

Random splits:
12:31 at Empire (1.53 = 8:11 pace)
9:23 to Glen Edith (1.19 = 7:53)
5:56 down and around (0.70 = 8:29)
3:14 up the hill (0.38 = 8:31)
3:16 down (8:36)
3:03 up (8:02)
10:07 to the end (1.29 = 7:51)

(rest day)

Excuses, excuses...

Luke's b-day dinner at the Olive Garden last night made it so that there was no way I was going to make it to GTA this AM. Left work a bit early for the Spring XC meeting - almost 60 kids there for next season (I think the missing kids could put us above 60!!!).

It was right from there to the Senior awards night, where nate picked up two: Scholar-Athlete (need > 90 avg and varsity letters in at least 2 sports for at least 2 years), and the Jim May scholarship for a Webster senior that plans on running in college.

Running 15:00 [2] 2.0 mi (7:30 / mi)
slept:6.25

Probably not worthy of logging. I went to the final track practice of the year. Had the guys that don't race until Saturday do 4x600m Cruise Intervals (Brycen races Friday, so just did the first two), so I ran back and forth on the diagonal to make sure they went easy enough. Before that I jogged 8 minutes during their w/up, but couldn't get myself to head back out when there was a slice of pizza to be had, and then it was time to head home to celebrate Luke's 9th birthday.

Running 50:41 [3] 6.5 mi (7:48 / mi)
slept:6.75

OK, so now it's 2 weeks in a row that I was able to run 1 day at lunch time! And it is only Tuesday.

Ran this route from the Y.

Splits:
6:52 at Goodman
6:50 to Culver
6:36 to Winton
5:35 to the Cobbs Hill entrance (7:51/mi avg to this point)
8:59 to loop around the woods and head thru the park to Culver & Monroe
15:49 back to Y (= 7:37/mi), including 9:57 for the 10 minute stretch

Running 16:30 intensity: (14:00 @2) + (2:30 @5) 2.25 mi (7:20 / mi)
slept:5.75 weight:162.5lbs

A little running during track practice. The guys did 4 x 200, 1 x 400. Their recovery was me doing a 400 jog (600 after the last 200). I had to run hard along the diagonal to get their times (probably averaged about 27 on the 200s). Jogged a couple of laps with AJ and Nico.
6 PM

Running 24:03 intensity: (12:03 @2) + (12:00 @4) 3.2 mi (7:31 / mi)

Then it was off to grab Luke and take him to his ball game. I went for a short run after dropping him off for his pre-game. I went 4 x (3 easy / 3 tempo) around the trails by the ball fields, then over for a short loop at the Swamp and back.

Other Sports (Candlepin Bowling) 1 [1]
slept:7.5 (rest day)

OK, not really training, but this was quite taxing on my groin. I thought I was going to have to stop, but I toughed it out for the team. The first game I tied nate at 68, but Chris beat us by one. nate stepped up to a 69 the second game, I responded with a late mark to score 75, but the birthday girl was over 80, I think, FTW.
