ROC Sprint Series #2 at Cobbs Hill Park
It does not get any sloppier than this.
C1 - Brutal hill to start and I misread the trails
C2 - Ran down the wrong trail played around in some deadfall before returning to C1 and doing it right.
C3 - OK
C4 - Went over the hill at the wrong angle and came down way right of the flag, when I got there, Kameron and the kids were already there - I had left C1 before them. Ouch.
C5 - Drifted right just a bit, came out at an intersection with no flag, looked left and didn't see a flag, so I ran right for a bit before realizing it had to be left - it turned out to be visible from where I popped out (not sure why I didn't see it)
C6 - too much zig-zag (started out on the wrong trail to the right)
C7 - I could not find this control on the map. I ran along the line and saw a flag just past the second water tower. Went about 30m past before I decided to take a look - the code matched the clue sheet, so I punched, then I saw the circle on the map.
C8 - Got onto the wrong trail while trying to stay high. Then the flag was not in the mapped depression, but was down lower in the larger contour depression, farther from the trail.
C9 - Blew by this back to C2 or C3 and had to backtrack
C10 - I accidentally took the perimeter trail way left, then when I got close, I missed the flag because I was looking ahead to the next curve.
C11 - I had already seen this on the way to C6
F - Sort of straight, but hill was too steep and junk-covered to go very straight

ROC Score-O at Cobbs Hill Park
Steve set a special patriotic 50-control, 60-minute Score-O. Nice use of the small park. I planned a loop around School #1 at the start, to have easy running while I made plans. Two controls were visible from the start, so that's the way I decided to go, so I could start running before I flipped the map over. I ended up missing a control on the back side of the school, but I realized it wouldn't cost much time to get it after coming out of the woods. I went along the park road and got the Lake Riley controls (interrupted by the basketball court control), then moved into the field towards Monroe, getting the low controls.
Next it was around the base of the hill to pick up SD (ran past it first), ?, NY, OK (a bit of a bobble here). Found a small trail up the hill that was a nice shortcut to the control on the hill. Then up top for the controls there and into the woods south from NJ. I did one arc to grab the controls that I missed behind the apartment, then popped down to the trail and thru the water authority area to the gate for a control, then up a bit for another, then up to the water towers for a couple more. Zig-zagged in the woods away from the start/finish, then back along the edge to get the rest.
Out of the woods at the backstop for one and I had two leftover to get, but 3 blank spots on my card. I got RI from the school, then headed towards CT, desperately looking for SC on the map. I could not find it. As I passed near the Start, I saw a flag on the end of a fence, got over to it and saw it was SC! The circle and code did not appear on the map for me because it blended in with the parking lot color. A quick sidetrip for CT and I was done. nate crushed me by over 12 minutes, but I did manage 2nd as I was the only other one to get all 50.
If only I had found a flag to bring, I would have gotten the bonus point and a victory over nate :-( .
