Note
(rest day)

Arrived back in Seattle and chose to do the Space Needle thing, instead of making a run fit into the schedule. The Sox happened to be in town, but poor planning also meant that we couldn't catch them (too bad - tix were as low as $8 on StubHub).

Running 36:19 intensity: (8:25 @2) + (15:09 @3) + (6:42 @4) + (6:03 @5) 5.0 mi (7:16 / mi)

Treadmill on the cruise ship as we approached Victoria, BC.

w/up from 7mph to 7.5 during mile 1.
Picked it up 0.1mph every 0.1mi all the way to 10.2, back down to 10.0 during miles 2-4
w/dn at 8.5 (down to 8.0 during last 1/4) during mile 5 (included a brief stint at 3.0 early, as I tried to check the HR - made it down to 150 before it registered).

So, 20:21 for 3 miles (12:45 for 2 with 7:34 before and 7:35, including some 3mph after). Not sure I could race any faster than that.

Canoeing 1:00:00 [2]

Not really canoeing, rather kayaking, but I don't want to clutter things up with another category that I don't have a chance to use. And closer to two hours than 1, but we were taking it fairly easy most of the time.

Had to meet off the ship in Ketchkan at 6:50am to pay to exercise. Is that any way to relax on a cruise?

Actually, this was a very nice paddle. I was in a double with Luke and we cruised around a couple of islands in whatever body of water this was (connected to the Pacific, but technically not part of the ocean).

Saw a bald eagle on one of the islands and the kids got to play with some starfish-shaped creature that was blue.

Biking 31:30 [3] 9.0 mi (3:30 / mi)

Ship took us up Tracy Arm Fjord this AM and we were able to get within sight of the humongous glacier that blocks (is?) the river.

In the afternoon, I was able to drag myself up to the fitness center, and started out with some biking - "hill climb" mode where the resistance gradually increased beyond where I had any chance of maintaining 90 rpm.

Elliptical 22:00 [3] 2.4 mi (9:10 / mi)
max:145

Next up was the elliptical, which gave me an interval choice that ended up being 1 min easy / 1 min hard. I quickly migrated to Level 7 for easy and Level 12 for hard.

Erging 8:37 [4] 2.0 km (4:19 / km)

Finally, it was a 2K erg, but I didn't feel like going all out, so I kept it relatively comfortable for 1500 and put the last 500 under 2 minutes.

Hiking 1:00:00 [2] 8.0 mi (7:30 / mi)

We were docked in Skagway and everyone else was going on some dog sled adventure, but Chris had located a nice trail map of the area and I chose a nice hike. Went to Upper Dewey Lake, along it and back down. The round trip was almost 3 hours for the trail portion, which is listed at 6 miles (plus the Lake portion up top), and another 30 minutes or so of round trip from the pier.

The elevation change was 3100 feet, which made for a long trip up and the trail was not really runnable in most places, which made for a time-consuming descent as well (about 2/3 the time of the trip up).

The top was just about the top of the tree line and some additional time would have been nice to climb a bit higher. I was above the snow level on the hill just to the east(?), but the area around the lake is flat and no snow remained there.

Note

I guess this doesn't qualify for training, but we went on a kick-A zip line course in Juneau. Wow! Included a short rapell from the last tower to the ground.
5 PM

Running 30:09 [2] 3.35 mi (9:00 / mi)

Easy run around Juneau with Chelsea and Zach. Not a whole lot of options of where to run here. The hills start very close to the water, so we ran to a hiking trail, which was not really runnable (up), but we went up a bit before jogging back.

Running 17:00 [3] 2.2 mi (7:44 / mi)
(injured)

Hopped on the treadmill on the Golden Princess. Did a 1 mi w/up, then increased 0.1 mph every 0.1 mi, until my calf, which was tender before I started, couldn't take it any more and I had to pack it in.

Biking 21:00 [3] 6.0 mi (3:30 / mi)

Had to wait in line for the Elliptical, but by the time Chelsea got on, the bike next to her machine had freed up, so I grabbed that instead. The cruise info had indicated that peak times for the fitness center were from 10am-5pm, but it was crowded at 8ish this AM. This was the only day that I had to wait, though. Kind of like how all of the equipment is busy at the Y for the first few days in January. Here, I think it was not broken resolutions, but the physical inability of people to push themselves away from the buffet tables!

Erging 22:45 [3] 5.0 km (4:33 / km)

Finished up with a 5K erg session. Felt fine during this, but the core was sore for a couple of days after. The calf was not a problem at all here, as long as I didn't try to recover very quickly.
