Running 30:47 [2] 3.55 mi (8:40 / mi)
(sick)

Easy run after the guys finished up on the Schroeder track. They did:
Group 1 - 5T, 4T, 3T, 2I, 1R, 2 x 200R
Group 2 - 4T, 3T, 3T, 2I, 1R, 2 x 200R
Group 3 - 4T, 3T, 2I, 2 x 1R, 2 x 200R

I just ran the Thomas loop. Quite windy on Publisher's Parkway.

Orienteering 1:33:02 [2] 9.3 mi (10:00 / mi)
(sick)

A pre-run of the BFLO Map Hike 2011 course at Hunter's Creek, with Patty following behind. Knocked off about 16 of the 25 controls. We were going to hit at least some of the NE controls, but the creek was too high and icy at the usual crossing point on the gas line, so it was back up the hill. Cleared everything west of the creek and had time to go around on the road and grab two on the east side.

A couple of controls will be moved - one just slightly, to the possibly more distinctive, distinctive tree. The other will be moved about 50m - it's tough to find the right "stony ground" when it's covered in snow!

Pace/distance is a total guess - I should have brought my Garmin to town...

Orienteering 24:52 [3] *** 3.11 km (8:00 / km)
spiked:15/18c (sick)

Memory-O at Emery Park. The BFLO Annual Meeting was at noon, but that's when I had to leave EA to drive Zach to his hockey game, at Leisure this time [they beat a Canadian team, 5-0 today by skating much better than last night; Zach scored the first goal and set up the second]. So, I was able to head out before the meeting. 18 controls and I was able to remember 7, then 7, then finished up the last 4. 3 errors: leaving the mulch pile, I went way too far right to the reentrant and had to come back up; after the control on the fence near the lodge, I went to the right around the ravine, needlessly; leaving 13 or something, I didn't realize that the next control was in the woods at the fence line, so I went way right to make sure I didn't miss it left.

Running 15:55 [2] 1.82 mi (8:45 / mi)

Ran around a little randomly to have more footprints to confuse people - sometimes aimed from one control to in between 2 others, sometimes skipped one that shouldn't be skipped. Ran until I figured I had better get Zach.

Running 33:30 [2] 3.96 mi (8:28 / mi)
(sick)

Easy run prior to Zach's hockey tournament game at Holiday Rinks in Cheektowaga. Zach played quite well, but they only had 11 skaters and it is clear that not everyone is running track to stay in shape. They gave up a goal with 50 seconds left in the first to lose the period, and with less than that in the second to lose that period (Zach setup the Cyclone's only goal). And the conditioning situation led to a 2-0 loss in the third.

Went out and back, like so, to stay on the sidewalk in the dark (and with snow falling the first half - enough that my tracks were mostly covered on the way back). Despite being on the sidewalk for a change, one car blasted their horn at me - I think they thought I was in the road! No coughing during the run, but it was out of control after I finished.

Driving to the game, the Thruway speed went from 70ish to 40ish over the course of just a few miles around the Clarence rest area, so I got off at Transit instead of continuing all the way to Walden.

And our track meet scheduled for Wednesday has officially been postponed. So much for March going out like a lamb.

Running 50:10 [3] 6.46 mi (7:46 / mi)

GTA - great turnout to see the 8 or 9-day old Grimm triplets. 13 runners, including MW and 2 members of the ladies aux, who outlasted me in most of the surges.

With yesterday's snowfall and this morning's temp (25), most of the route was slick, so the effort exceeded the results. I kept up fairly well - couldn't keep up with the canal pickup after a while, and the hills (Reitz and Sandpiper this time) continue to provide an opportunity for the leaders to gap me.

Took a spill at the corner coming back onto Cricket Hill. No apparent serious damage, but it knocked out my momentum and I fell back from the pack while I got up and recovered a bit.

Running intervals 1:00:00 intensity: (16:08 @2) + (43:52 @3) 7.88 mi (7:37 / mi)
(sick)

Week 11 of training means week 1 of "Strength" work: 6 miles of intervals at 10 seconds under marathon pace. I chose 3 x 2 miles to kick this off. MP minus 10 seconds seemed a little wimpy, since a 3:20 marathon is just about 7:38/mile, so I was shooting for about 7:20.

Just cold and breezy enough to avoid the outdoors for the debut strength effort, so this was in gerbil mode again.

4:18 - 1/2 mi w/up
14:35 - 2 mile first lap at 8.0+8.1, then 8.2 the rest
4:19 - 1/2 recovery (220 at 6.6. then 7.0)
14:33 - 2 mile at 8.2
4:18 - recovery
14:44 - 2 mile, eased back to 8.1 since the first two were a little fast
3:13 - w/dn until the treadmill shut me down at the 1 hour mark

The workout did seem to take its toll, after all. I was never uncomfortable (just bored), but the relief when I was done was at least in part because it wore me out more than I expected. It also unleashed some coughing bouts, and perhaps those facts are related.
