Orienteering (Laramie Day 1) 52:55 [3] *** 6.2 km (8:32 / km)
spiked:10/13c shoes: Brooks Adrenaline GTS 2015?

First day at Wyoming. used this as a training run. My intent was to see how well I could do at altitude. I did want to navigate my self rather than just follow the crowd.

#1 I started off at an easy jog down the hill. By the time I got to the bottom I was out of breath. I had to walk a lot of the uphill. The leaders pulled away. I followed the crowd across the field. unfortunately the people ahead of me weren't watching the leaders. We cut into the woods and everyone was left. I veered left to a bare rock area (on the map but I couldn't see it at the time). I then corrected but everyone else past the control. the lead pack was gone.
#2: I stayed high and contoured around. On the way there I caught back up the end of the lead pack (Ali Crocker, Brian Moore and others).
#3: Some people dogged leg back to the trail. Brian Moore and I went straight. It was slow initially but then opened up. I think we made up more ground.
#4: Right behind Ali most of the way. My final approach I went left but I think it was quicker to punch through the green.
#5: I went straight. Everyone else followed Ali around the hill. We crossed the stream together. she climbed high and I stayed low. I made up ground when she and those following her were to far left. People saw me leaving the control.
#6: In my hasted to get away from everyone I took a bad route out. I circled the hill rather than going right over it. I just gave away all the lead I just had.
#7: A lot of people around. I went straight/left (Ali was more left). Others went right. We cross the final stream and headed up it. Picked up Tom Svbodney and Aiden Minto were there looking confused. Tom, Ali ran away from me on the uphill.
#8: with the crowd.
#9: This is where I lost all my time. If you kept just right of straight the woods were open and a clean run. I didn't. I decided to follow the rocky ridge and I wanted to follow it on the west side. Unfortunately, the west side was junky. I would cut over, only to cut back to the rocky ridge which was slow running. I did this several times before bailing out and running the east side.
Rest of course was uneventful. Just tired. I had to keep walking.
I finished 9 (last of the entire group I was with). 4th place was only a minute in front of me.
