Quantico Marine Corp base: Beaver dam map. Woods were generally open which was very nice. Course had some long trail runs (nice on my ankle, which I taped). I twisted my ankle again on the trail going to #2 but after hobbling a bit it felt ok. Glasses were wet and fogged up which made it difficult to read the map details. My clue descriptions got wet and I was having a very hard time reading the clue descriptions.

I looked at the map ahead of time so had my course planned out better.

#1 No problems but I was hesitant. It just seemed longer than I expected. I figured it was just me getting use to the 1:10,000 map after mapping on 1:5,000.

#2: i originally planned to go the toad around in order to cross the creek but then I saw the bridge/trail crossing so went there instead. Leaving 1, just followed the stream wherever running was best until the trail, trail across scream then up the hill. I was south of the control and had to loop around to it.

#3. North the road then trail a long way. I thought about taking the trail the whole way but since the woods were open and I wanted some practice. Cut in at the trail junction before the last rough open field. Read contours fine and went directly to control.

#4: Straight but drifted right trying to get through green. Would have been faster for me if I had just run to the road going around the green.

#5: Down the spur, pas the rocks and across the stream to the control. Saw Matt Smith there.

#6: Confused on this one. Control description said ditch but map has a ride. Went ok to the control. Matt still with me.

#7: Straight

#8: Headed due east toe the big field. Across field to ride to road. Cross creek on the road then cut up. I was little south of control and control was in the green but I didn't lose any time there.

#9 intended straight but drifted right. I was climbing the spur short of the control when I realized I was going the wrong way up the hill. Cut over to the correct hill.

#10 Straight. Through the rough open field (slow going with tall grass). along stream right to the ditch but there was no control. I punched through the green and still didn't see the control. Went back through green closer to stream still no control. So I went further along the stream and circled around. I came to small clearing right by the stream that had a elephant track through the grass so lots of orienteers had been there. Still no control. I was getting ready to run another direction when I took a few steps and saw the control behind a tree right next to me.

#11: cut up to the field

#12: Straight. I drifted right and had to correct. Ran down the reentrant until getting to the control.

#13: Planned to take the trail but I missed the trail junction and ended up going down the wrong trail toward 14. Decided to just keep going that way since there was a crossing point down there. I may not have been to much slower then the way I originally planned.

#14. Straight. Crossed stream and cut up to trail. Hit trail and figured I would just run up it until I saw the control. I saw the control and ran to it only to see it was the wrong control at the trail junction. I had to run back to my control.

I was planning to do at least three miles today then rest Friday so I would be ready for orienteering on Sunday. I was part way in my run when I rolled my bad ankle again. Not only did it hurt, it also gave me a leg cramp. I Stopped my run and started walking/limping home. It let up after about 1/4 mile so I started a very easy jog home the rest of the way.
