| Commute to work via downtown. Had a light dusting of snow on the ground again this morning. Near the Starker Forest offices there was a huge number of geese in the fields. This was the biggest number that I have ever seen together on the ground. |

| Saw the varied thrush this morning in the back corner of the backyard hopping around on the ground. They have some cool coloration. They are very close to a black-headed grosbeak, which I also claim to have seen in the backyard. So now I have some doubts about the grosbeaks. I thought that what I saw had thick beaks. Hope they come back so that I can resolve question. |

| Felt lazy today as it was pouring outside. Up in Portland, Paula and I saw and heard a flock of sandhill cranes flying overhead! They looked like geese, except that you could see their long legs sticking out behind them. At least they sounded exactly like what I had seen as a kid in Idaho Falls, so I'm sticking with this story until I hear another crane or heron make the same sort of sound. |

Did the first couple down lower on the hill where it was very muddy and sloppy. Worked my way up the hill and just past the flattish area in the middle the road was nice and firm. This is where I did the last 3. The poison oak is just about the bud out into leaves. Yeah!! |

One of the lectures detailed a study on rough skinned newts, which are very common in Corvallis. Turns out they are extremely poisonous, with a toxin that is closely related to the fugu fish (pufferfish) from Japan that is used in their exotic killer sushi. They aren't too toxic for some poison tolerant garter snakes which eat them. |

| Commute to work. Saw my first western bluebirds at barley hill. At first I thought they were robins they were so big with red on their chest, but I could see the blue. They had a very specific distance that I could approach. When I road, they flew. When I stopped they stopped, so I could get a real good look at them. They definitely did not have a white wing bar which would make them lazuli buntings. Also, saw some white crowned sparrows. |
