Friday Feb 29

Bicycle 40:00 [1]
Commute to work.

Found a dead spotted towhee in the driveway. Someone must have hit it with a car. They kind of look like an evil robin with their red eyes.

At barley hill, saw a gorgeous pheasant near the fence. I expected him to take off running when I rode by, but he just stood there. Then when I stopped, he got nervous and flew across the rode squawking. I started riding again, but I heard some other squawking in the distance. Stopped and saw another pheasant way out in the field farther up on the hill. I wouldn't have noticed him without the sympathy noise.

Thursday Feb 28

Bicycle 40:00 [1]
Commute to work. Gorgeous day!

Setup an account on a few days ago. Woohoo I have 3 whole friends! I don't anticipate that I will spend much time there. It does look like a good way to get connected with long lost friends, *if* they happen to be on there too.

Wednesday Feb 27

Bicycle 40:00 [1]
Commute to work.

Paula and I have been downloading episodes of Dexter from iTunes. It is about a serial killer forensics expert who kills for good not evil. Sounds pretty far fetched, but it keeps us entertained...when we aren't grossed out or cringing.

Tuesday Feb 26

Running 30:00 [1]
shoes: New Balance1122 sz 10 w D
Short run at Philomath HS with Annie. The grass has firmed up with the drier weather. Just before I got home, I saw a coyote trotting across my neighbor's yard. It is the first one that I have seen in the neighborhood. They have chickens in a fenced area, so I wonder if Mr. coyote was up to no good.

Time to order some new running shoes. The tops are wearing out.
Bicycle 40:00 [1]
Commute to work. I still remember how to ride a bike. Saw some mallards in the standing water in the grass at Barley Hill. Usually I see geese out there.

Monday Feb 25

Note
Easy peasy week to rest the knees.

Got the teeth cleaned yesterday, otherwise, I would have ridden my bike. I had her use cinnamon fluoride, but suggested that they should have fluoride infused cinnamon buns. It would be a big boost to the business!

Sunday Feb 24

Running 45:00 [1]
shoes: New Balance1122 sz 10 w D
Ran to Bald Hill and met up with Paula and Annie there. My right knee acted a little funny, so I cut the run short and walked the rest of the time.
Walking 25:00 [1]
shoes: New Balance1122 sz 10 w D
Walking at Bald Hill.

Saturday Feb 23

Running warm up/down 24:00 [1]
shoes: New Balance1122 sz 10 w D
Warm up to the barn. Cool down back from mid hill.
Running hills 24:00 [3]
shoes: New Balance1122 sz 10 w D
3x to the top of Bald Hill with Paula and Annie. Paula made it to the top 3 times as well. Nice dry brisk day.
Running hills 3:00 [4]
shoes: New Balance1122 sz 10 w D
6x30s hill bounding.
Running 25:00 [1]
shoes: New Balance1122 sz 10 w D
Down hill running.
Note
Saw my first white breasted nuthatch hopping around on the woodpecker trees. They are fun to watch as they seem to prefer hopping straight down the tree headfirst.

Was looking at the picture of the ruby breasted kinglet and noticed that it had a very narrow needle-like beak. I don't think my bird had a beak like that. So it was probably a hutton's vireo. Will have to try and find him again for a positive id.

Friday Feb 22

Walking 1:50:00 [1]
shoes: Keen Targhee II
Walked to work, lunch, and home.

The author of the book I'm currently reading has an over fondness for the word puissance. He uses it all over the place, and not once uses a simpler word like say...strength. The book is the latest in the Thomas Covenant series that I loved when I was a kid, now I think they are just okay.

Thursday Feb 21

Note
Took the day off. All this walking is tiring out the knees. I thought the low impact stuff was supposed to be okay. I guess I'm doing too much at once.

We had the orienteering courses at Franklin School again during their Science Night. One of the demonstrations showed that the roots of perennial rye grass glow under black light whereas the annual stuff doesn't. This is all naturally occurring ie no genetic modification.

Someone also brought a Segway for the hallway, which was quite popular although they hardly did anything on it. There is a company downtown that rents them for an hour or two. Paula and I are going to try them sometime.

Wednesday Feb 20

Running 30:00 [1]
shoes: New Balance1122 sz 10 w D
Quick run at Bald Hill very early this morning. Got nailed in the face with a blackberry vine. Ran along that exact trail yesterday and didn't see any vines hanging over the trail.
Walking 1:50:00 [1]
Walk to work, lunch, and home. (3:40)

Tried out one of my new travel pants. Worked out okay, but of course they were too short even though they were supposedly talls. All pants seem to be tailored for penguins or maybe my wearing the pants at my armpits is a little too high.

On the way home, I got to see the lunar eclipse from the start to the full eclipse. Pretty cool. The last time I saw one was in Italy 12 years ago. Paula and I were camping in the Dolomites in the fall. Our tent was the only one in the whole campground. I don't know why I even looked out of the tent that night, because I never do that. But when I did, I saw the red moon.

Tuesday Feb 19

Running 1:00:00 [1]
shoes: New Balance1122 sz 10 w D
Ran with Annie at Bald Hill this morning. The sky was overcast, but no rain.
Walking 1:50:00 [1]
shoes: Keen Targhee II
Walk to work, lunch, and home. Added my Keen shoes to the list. I have decided that I really like Keen shoes. Probably because they are made wider than other brands. When I tried these on in the store they felt like slippers.

They had a show on TV last night called "The Anatomy of a Joke". We caught just enough of it to hear this joke from George Carlin.

A guy in a bar is talking to a woman and asks if she wants to go to his place and do something kinky. She agrees, so they go to his place where they have some straight forward sex. She asks him, "I thought we were going to do something kinky?" He replies, "Oh that...I crapped in your purse."

Monday Feb 18

Walking 1:50:00 [1]
Walked to work, lunch, and home. Mostly did it all in one shot, because the computers at work were down in the morning.

Before leaving for work, saw what I decided was a ruby-crowned kinglet right outside the bedroom window. Also could have been a hutton's vireo, but because this bird was tiny I have decided it was a female kinglet. I checked the pussy willow where it landed, but of course all I could see were mourning doves and juncos.

Sunday Feb 17

Running long 2:00:00 [1]
shoes: New Balance1122 sz 10 w D
Ran at Bald Hill with Paula and Annie. Met King Fergus a big white fluffy Great Pyrenees. Beautiful day!

Saturday Feb 16

Running warm up/down 27:00 [1]
shoes: New Balance1122 sz 10 w D
10 min warm up. 17 min cool down.
Running hills 24:00 [3]
3x to the top of Bald Hill with Paula.
Running 14:00 [1]
Down hill running.

Friday Feb 15

Running 1:00:00 [1]
shoes: New Balance1122 sz 10 w D
Ran with Annie at Bald Hill.
Walking 1:50:00 [1]
Walk to work, to lunch, and home. At lunch, I walked on the new boardwalk that they put in behind the softball diamonds near work. They have done some nice landscaping back there.

Thursday Feb 14

Walking 1:50:00 [1]
Walk to work, lunch, and home. Wore my regular shoes because I don't want to wear out my hiking boots before going to Nepal. Another beautiful walk home at night.

Wednesday Feb 13

Running 1:00:00 [1]
shoes: New Balance1122 sz 10 w D
Ran with Annie at Bald Hill.
Walking 1:50:00 [1]
shoes: New Balance1122 sz 10 w D
Walk to work, lunch, and home. Covered about 200 pages in the book I'm reading. There are lots of pictures.

Tuesday Feb 12

Walking 1:50:00 [1]
Walk to work, lunch, and home. Too tired this morning to get up and go for a jog.

Monday Feb 11

Running 1:00:00 [1]
shoes: New Balance1122 sz 10 w D
Ran at about 6:30 this morning since I was lazy yesterday. Saw a large flock of geese come in to the big grassy field right at sunrise. They spiral in passing over the field several times before actually landing. Saw my neighbor with her dog Thor "Dog of Thunder". He was all wiggly and happy to see me.
Walking 1:50:00 [1]
Walked to work, and lunch, and home. Dry weather so I got to read on the way in. Tried out some new socks. Need to get some new pants since the ones with zip off leggings are not going to work on our trip; they rub on my legs. Unfortunately, almost all pants are sized for people with penguin proportions (all body no legs), so I'm just going to have to get some that are too short and add some fabric to the bottom.

Beautiful evening walking home. No clouds, lots of stars, lots of people walking friendly dogs.

Saturday Feb 9

Running warm up/down 32:00 [1]
shoes: New Balance1122 sz 10 w D
20 min warm up and 12 min cool down at sunny squishy Philomath HS. Nicest day we have had since October.
Running intervals 16:00 [4]
shoes: New Balance1122 sz 10 w D
4x4 min intervals.
Running 12:00 [1]
shoes: New Balance1122 sz 10 w D
4x3 min jog between intervals.

Friday Feb 8

Running warm up/down 24:00 [1]
shoes: New Balance1122 sz 10 w D
10 min warm up run to Bald Hill. 14 min cool down run back. Saw several rough skinned newts today. They blend in with the mud (unless they are on their backs), so I hope I didn't squish any.
Running hills 24:30 [3]
shoes: New Balance1122 sz 10 w D
3x to the top of Bald Hill. The snow is gone from the trails now. Sloppy, muddy mess though. 7:56, 8:15ish, 8:20ish
Running 3:00 [4]
shoes: New Balance1122 sz 10 w D
6x 30s hill bounding.
Running 24:30 [1]
shoes: New Balance1122 sz 10 w D
Down hill running.
Walking 1:35:00 [1]
Walked to work the short way (3.8 mi, 1 hr), 40 min walk at "lunch" (I forgot my wallet, so no lunch), walk home the long way (5.2mi, 1.5 hrs).

Saw a nice western blue bird on the way in. Nice blue back and head with red on its chest. Right after that I saw a blue heron. It got nervous and flew over to the field near Consumer Power. I watched it stab something with its beak, but I didn't see it pick anything up. Also saw a small green caterpillar on the sidewalk later.

Thursday Feb 7

Note
I was too lazy to go out and brave the hard rain and inevitable muck to go running today. Got to see a whole flock of house finches in the trees in front of the house. Also, had a large number of goldfinches in the back yard. Time to add more thistle seed to their feeder.

Wednesday Feb 6

Walking 1:50:00 [1]
Walked to work again today even though yesterday my left shin was hurting me. Didn't feel like shin splints. At work, I realized that I had a haircut today. There was no way I would get there in time walking. To make matters worse, I forgot my wallet. When I called them to cancel, I found out that Cammie had called in sick. Fate definitely did not want me to get my hair cut today.

The walking back and forth to work are revealing some things that I'm glad I'm learning now. Like, my nylon pants irritate my skin. I'm going to have to get something else before the big trip. The boots are working okay. Socks are okay, although my official hiking socks are worn out. My running socks are just as thick, so I'll use them.

Tuesday Feb 5

Running 1:00:00 [1]
shoes: New Balance1122 sz 10 w D
Ran with Annie at Bald Hill.
Walking 1:50:00 [1]
Walked to work, to lunch, and home again. 3:40 total.

Monday Feb 4

Walking 1:50:00 [1]
Guess I'll start putting the walking as actual work outs at half the actual time, since I'm feeling it in the legs and knees. Walk to work (1.5 hrs), walk at lunch (40 min), walk home (1.5 hrs). It was dry enough this morning to get some reading in.

Sunday Feb 3

Running long 2:00:00 [1]
shoes: New Balance1122 sz 10 w D
Ran with Paula and Annie at Bald Hill. Had some sun where it was so warm I wish I wore shorts instead of tights, and we had some cold snow with wind. Weird. The trail was still snowy above Mulkey Creek. Saw a girl out jogging who I used to see in the gym 12 years ago.

Saturday Feb 2

Running 25:00 [1]
shoes: New Balance1122 sz 10 w D
The weather was crappy and we had a lot of things to do today, so we just went out for a short while.

Friday Feb 1

Note
Walk to work and home. 3 hours. 10.4 mi.
