Monday Apr 21

Note
More snow today. Resting before the big trip.

Sunday Apr 20

Note
Snow, hail, rain, sun. We got a little bit of everything. Paula and I packed for most of the day. Was able to slip in a mow when the sun came out briefly.

Friday Apr 18

Walking 1:50:00 [1]
shoes: Keen Targhee II
Walked to work, lunch, and home. Beat the rain going to work, so I was able to finish my book.

I have an old "girl friend" coming into town tonight for a volleyball tournament for her daughter. "Girl friend" is almost the opposite of the kind of relationship we had. Hard to describe. She comes down from Beaverton with her family about once per year to pay penance for the way she treated me. I dread this time of year, because I know that the visit is going to happen at any time. She is one of those people who thinks that the past was everything and that getting older is the worst thing that could ever happen. Kind of like the song "Glory Days" by Bruce Springsteen. It pretty much bores me to tears. Maybe I'll go to the game late and leave early.

Thursday Apr 17

Running 1:00:00 [1]
shoes: New Balance1122 sz 10 w D
Ran with Annie at Bald Hill. My ipod didn't have any of my podcasts on it, so I just left it in the truck. It happened because during one of iTunes frequent annoying updates, it rebuilt the library while I was synching.
Bicycle 1:00:00 [1]
Commute to work with some errands downtown. Weather was warm and sunny in the afternoon.

Wednesday Apr 16

Walking 1:50:00 [1]
shoes: Keen Targhee II
Walk to work, lunch, and home.

Tuesday Apr 15

Running 1:00:00 [1]
shoes: New Balance1122 sz 10 w D
Ran with Annie at Bald Hill. A little rainy today. Saw Thor Dog of Thunder towards the end. He wasn't much interested in me, just Annie.
Bicycle 1:00:00 [1]
Commute to work as well as errands all over town at lunch time.

Monday Apr 14

Running 1:50:00 [3]
shoes: Keen Targhee II
Walk to work, lunch, and home. Rainy day. At least the weekend was nice.

Sunday Apr 13

Running long 1:58:00 [1]
shoes: New Balance1122 sz 10 w D
Ran to Bald Hill with Paula's ski poles. Finally met up with her at the loop above the bridge. We are bringing the poles to Nepal for the downhill portions and any rough areas. She also tried out one of her hiking skirts today. A little tight on the knees.

Fed one of the black bulls some nice green grass from my side of the fence. When I offered it, he came a running. The other black bull was a little shy, tossing his head when I presented him with the grass.

Another good day for birds. Had 5 evening grosbeaks on the feeder simultaneously. Saw a chipping sparrow. When we got back from the run, saw a hummingbird at the top of the pussy willow. It was too far away to see any colors. The violet green swallows are still checking out the bird house. I need to empty it of any old nests so that they will use it.

Saturday Apr 12

Running warm up/down 24:00 [1]
shoes: New Balance1122 sz 10 w D
10 min warmup, 14 min cooldown at Bald Hill.
Running hills 24:00 [3]
shoes: New Balance1122 sz 10 w D
3x to the top of Bald Hill. Haven't done these in a while. First time running this year with no jacket. Road still muddy. Starting to dry out in places. Saw a group of people pushing baby strollers through the mud to the top of the hill. Also, saw one of the fast OSU girls going up the hill.
Running hills 3:00 [4]
shoes: New Balance1122 sz 10 w D
6x30s hill bounding.
Running 24:00 [1]
shoes: New Balance1122 sz 10 w D
Down hill running
Note
This was a good day for birds. Saw my first evening grosbeak since moving to Oregon. It was one of my favorite birds when I grew up in Oregon. A good looking male and female. Then I saw a violet green swallow who was interested in my bird house. First time I have ever seen one of those. He was sitting in the sun which made its colors very vivid. When I saw the grosbeaks and swallows I yelled for Paula, "Come here quick!" She was able to see them too and liked them.

Friday Apr 11

Walking 1:50:00 [1]
shoes: Keen Targhee II
Walk to work, lunch, and home on a beautiful sunny day!

Thursday Apr 10

Walking 1:50:00 [1]
shoes: Keen Targhee II
Walked to work, lunch, and home.

I'm reading a book on how people make decisions, Sources of Power: How People Make Decisions by Gary Klein. Of course as I read, I think of many orienteering examples that apply to the material presented. Then the author used his own orienteering example. Cool! He used a 180 mistake as an example of snap-back. After doing a 180, in your mind you think you are going in the right direction, so you explain away small discrepancies that don't match. Finally, the evidence gets so bad, that you must conclude that you have done something wrong.

Wednesday Apr 9

Running 1:00:00 [1]
shoes: New Balance1122 sz 10 w D
Ran with Annie at Bald Hill. Finally identified the new mystery birds eating my bug suet. Rough winged swallows. They were difficult because I never saw them soaring like a normal swallow. I only saw them feeding.

Got a new camera lens yesterday for our big trip. The guy I bought it from apparently ordered it online before a big trip to Australia. It came 2 days before the trip, but was not working. Disaster! So he went downtown and bought another one. When he got back he returned the broken one and got a new one. So then he had two, one for him and eventually one for me.
Bicycle 40:00 [1]
Commute to work.

Tuesday Apr 8

Bicycle 40:00 [1]
Commute to work. Rainy and drizzly today.

Monday Apr 7

Walking 1:50:00 [1]
shoes: Keen Targhee II
Commute to work and lunch. Not able to read because of the light drizzle, so I got caught up on my NPR Science Friday podcasts. Heard the chain saws this morning. The power company is hacking at my trees. I hope they don't butcher them too much.

Sunday Apr 6

Running 2:00:00 [1]
shoes: New Balance1122 sz 10 w D
Ran to Bald Hill and met up with Paula and Annie. Missed the super hard rains. Set up the camera to take some pictures of birds. Soon as I did that, no birds. They disappeared. Later we saw a hawk sitting in our tree. Picture wrecker.

Saturday Apr 5

Orienteering race 44:54 [4] ***
15c shoes: Jala X-Controls sz 9.5
Ran Larry's course at Willamette Park. Cold, rainy, windy day. Choose a slow beach route to one of the controls. The river was high, so there wasn't beach for the whole way. Finally, I gave up going in the woods and just ran in the river. Also, Larry put in an unintentional Mal Harding route choice. Either go straight and wade through waist deep river, or go way around. I waded. It wasn't very far but nerve racking just the same.
Running 15:00 [1]
shoes: Jala X-Controls sz 9.5
Control pick up. Someone stole one of the controls.

Friday Apr 4

Running 1:00:00 [1]
shoes: New Balance1122 sz 10 w D
Ran with Annie at Bald Hill. Crappy rainy day today. Broke out the new shoes, so now they are not pristine white. Wussed out on riding the bike to work.

Thursday Apr 3

Bicycle 50:00 [1]
Rode to work, haircut, and home. Picked up 20 lbs of bird seed when I was out. A bit of a load on the back. The weather was beautiful!

Wednesday Apr 2

Note
Came back from Tokyo. Got a decent nap in, so I was functional for the rest of the day. Went in to work. Got the first mow in of the year while the weather was nice.
