Saturday Jul 31

Orienteering (race) 25:01 [3] 2.7 km (9:16 / km)
12c
Rocky Mountain 1000 Day
Prologue
Made a mistake on the first control, so Erin Olafsen who started 30s behind passed me already. Hit halfway between 2 and 3. Was a little slow through the rest of the rocks.

Rocky Mountain 1000 Day
Chase
Ran out of energy towards the end with all the climb, thin air, and headwind. Was passed by Rick Oliver and Peter Gagarin on the last few controls.

Rocky Mountain 1000 Day
Stampede
Was fiddling with my control card when I saw Mikell's hat fly up in the air, "When it hits the ground you start!" I quickly shoved my control card in my pocket and took off after the blue runners. I forgot to start my watch in all the brouhaha. I hung with the leaders for a total of one control. I guess I passed a bunch of them at control #3 because they made a mistake. Came in just behind Jan Ingebritzen.

Thursday Jul 29

Orienteering 1:44:00 [3]
Rocky Mountain 1000 Day
Did the training day course. Was running well on the first half of the course. My mind started to wander so I screwed up some of the controls towards the end starting with #11. On this one I was off, so I decided I would do some relocation practice rather than just bailing out to the trail. I figured it out after long while. I then did a 180 on 14, and wandered a bit on 15.

Tuesday Jul 27

Running (warmup) 9:45 [1]
Went to Philomath High School for a short workout. Want to save something for the 1000 Days. Jogged around the track followed by light stretching.

Ran 400m intervals. With a roughly half lap jog inbetween.

Ran with Paula and Annie at Lewisburg Saddle. Did some pickups on the uphills.

Saturday Jul 24

Running (warmup) 30:00 [1]
Ran at Bald Hill with Paula and Annie.
Running (long intervals) 27:00 [3]
Ran the loop around the backside of Bald Hill. 8 minutes hard with walking recovery.

Cooldown jog back to the car.

Friday Jul 23

Bicycle 40:00 [1]
Rode bike to work and home.

Wednesday Jul 21

Bicycle 1:20:00 [1]
Rode bike to work, to get a haircut, then back home.
Running 30:00 [1]
Ran with Paula and Annie at Philomath HS. Ran around the grass then did a couple of quick laps around the track. 4 boys from the Philomath Middle School track team were practicing there with their mom's and a photographer. They had qualified for the National Junior Track and Field Championships to be held in Eugene next week. I think they said their time was 4:19

Tuesday Jul 20

Running 1:00:00 [1]
Ran with Paula and Annie at Bald Hill.

Monday Jul 19

Bicycle (mountain bike) 40:00 [1]
Rode bike to work and home.

Sunday Jul 18

Orienteering (race) 1:25:38 [3] 8.1 km (10:34 / km) +285m 8:59 / km

Canadian Champs Classic Day 2
I had a pretty good race. A couple of 2 minute mistakes. Ted de St. Croix started 2 minutes after me and I didn't see him until just before control #4. That was a major victory in itself. Overall felt that I had 4 minutes of navigation mistakes and 4 minutes of route choice errors (I could have significantly reduced my climb).

Classic Day 2 Course 7 - Splits

Saturday Jul 17

Orienteering (race) 1:07:25 [3] 5.2 km (12:58 / km) +200m 10:52 / km
23c
Canadian Champs Classic Day 1
Had a pretty good day. A couple of 2 minute errors, so I'm happy. Had to wade through a stream that was waist deep. Haven't done that for awhile. Again, very detailed terrain and very fun!

Training on the Canadian Champs Short Course
Picked up the flagging tape that I had put out. I concentrated on flowing through the course. I noticed that some of my splits were about the same as the race a few days ago even though I wasn't pushing the speed and was untieing streamers.

Classic Course 7 - Splits

Friday Jul 16

Note
Took this day off and drove to Atlin.

Thursday Jul 15

Orienteering (training) 40:00 [2] 3.3 km (12:07 / km) +100m 10:32 / km

Training at Long Lake
Reran my short course from yesterday. Would have saved about 3 minutes on my race (yesterday) had I taken more conservative routes. Messed up on the long leg, control #6 this time. I put flagging tape up at the controls for other people to train on.

Canadian Champs Midnight Sun Relay
I ran the last leg on our relay team (Steve Gregg, Kelsey Breseman, and myself). My race wasn't that great. I had a hard time getting into the map. We ended up in 4th place for the 8-point teams.

Wednesday Jul 14

Orienteering (race) 37:50 [3] 3.3 km (11:28 / km) +100m 9:57 / km
11c
Canadian Champs Short Course
I had another fairly decent face. I lost a couple of minutes towards the end, but overall I was happy. The map is very complicated with lots of deep depressions and hills.

Short Course 7 - Splits

Tuesday Jul 13

Hiking 3:00:00 [1] 18 km (10:00 / km)
Hiked in Kluane National Park. First I started a hike to the top of one of the mountains. I forget the name. Then I bagged it because I didn't want to do a bunch of stream crossings. I then did the Auriol Trail. Very mosquito-y. I saw some fresh tracks on the trail, so I called out, "Here Moosie, Moosie, Moosie!" because I didn't want to surprise it.

Monday Jul 12

Orienteering (race) 1:21:34 [3] 6.3 km (12:57 / km)
Barebones O-Cross (Farsta)
The is was a 3 loop race with forking. I ran very well on the first 2 loops then ran out of energy on the last part. I got passed by hordes of runners, but I was pleased with my result. Finally a decent run!

Orienteering (race) 15:06 [4] 1.7 km (8:53 / km) +60m 7:33 / km

Barebones Sprint 1
Made a 2 minute mistake which is a disaster on a sprint! Lots of trails.

Orienteering (race) 53:26 [3] 3.6 km (14:51 / km) +150m 12:17 / km

Saturday Jul 10

Orienteering (race) 1:07:25 [3] 6.4 km (10:32 / km) +240m 8:52 / km

Barebones Classic
I skipped control #9! Acckkk! When I was going for number 10, I had my compass on number 9, so naturally I did a lot of wandering on that control. It was actually a relief to find out I made that mistake. It explained a lot. Not a very good race.

Thursday Jul 8

Bicycle 20:00 [1]
Rode bike to work. Took rental car home.

Tuesday Jul 6

Running 1:08:00 [2]
Ran the little course that I set up for the kids. Had to significantly shorten it from the original plan because the scale on my first map was too large. Overcast, but still hot and muggy.

Sunday Jul 4

Running 1:00:00 [1]
More jogging and course setting, this time with Paula.

Saturday Jul 3

Running 1:15:00 [1]
Course setting around Bob and Eyvonne's house in Hot Springs Village. Everything was house numbers, signs, and utilities. The terrain around here would be awesome for orienteering. It looks like Flying Pig style terrain with lots of rock features.
