Intervals. Cold, windy, and rainy. I wasn't planning on doing much. Cut it even shorter because it was so miserable.

Orienteering meet at Battle Ground Lake. Rainy cold day. Map, control placement, and thick vegetation didn't make for a very fun day. Called it a day after the 6th control. Was actually out for 1 hour, subtracted time for hunting around for hidden controls.

Roller skied to the skateboard park loop and back to work. There was a lot of junk on the bike path today from the trees.

Ran with Annie at Bald Hill. Extended my usual route. Went past the bridge at Mulkey Creek up to the loop on top of the hill. Saw big bird fly up in the woods. Only got a glimpse of its fanned out tail. I think it was a turkey from the coloring.

Relocation exercise on the Lava Butte map with Paula. First she had the map, then she navigated to the superhuge circle, then I had to find the control after I figured out where we were.

Skied with Paula for the first hour at Mt. Bachelor. Then skied an extra loop by myself.

Control picking exercise on the Arnold Ice Cave map. Turned my ankle a couple of times.

More training on the Arnold Ice Cave map. We got partial maps. Only small "islands" were shown on the map. The idea was that we were to navigate across the nothingness into the islands and use the features inside to orient ourselves. Going from island to island would eventually lead us to the controls.

Skate skiing at Mt. Bachelor with Paula, Andy, and Mike Poulsen. The snow was very slow and grabby. Tough workout.

Night-O on the Lava Butte map. Had a nice head-to-head race with Gyorgy on the last 5 controls.

Picked up the last 5 controls afterwards. Tried some different routes. Didn't record the time.

Roller skied to the skateboard park loop and back to work. The only thing I did to fix my ski was to tighten a screw in the latching assembly a little. Apparently it was enough. I got to work a little faster today. Maybe my arms were a little more rested after the mechanical breakdown Wednesday.

Skied home. Realized that the speed up both this morning and in the afternoon is probably due to the fact that the street sweeper finally cleaned Reservoir Road. It was full of bark and ski stopping rocks previously.

Roller skied to the loop at the skateboard park. Of course, since this is the outer extent of my loop, my right ski started acting weird. I inspected it and tried again, but it still acted broke, so I gave up. Jay McDougal passed me on his bike and said hello. I changed shoes and jogged back to work.

Ran to work from the skateboard park. Mostly ran in the grass off to the side of the paved trail. Had a full pack of clothes and ski boots. Will drop off the pack at work and jog the rest of the way home.

Ran home from work. About a third of it was in the grassy rough area along the side of the bike path.

At first I wasn't going to do it because of the unplanned running that I did in the morning. We had a little event for Erik Osborn's going away party. It was a hash/orienteering event. We jogged from Andy's place, around the campus, and through Avery Park. It was a lot of fun.

Ran with Annie out to the barn and back. Put Annie in the truck and ran back out to the barn.

Ran long intervals on the trails on the back of Bald Hill. First one 8.5 minutes and the second 8 minutes. Was going to do more, but had to get to work.

Rest between intervals and cooldown back to the truck.

Warmup with Annie at Bald Hill.

Ran a test loop at Bald Hill. This is my first time doing this loop for a time, so we'll see how my future girly man self does (I'm trash talking my future self). Annie couldn't go because she would have over heated. Ran from the kiosk off of Reservoir Rd to the kiosk off of Harrison. Turned left, took the trail to the road. Turned left on the road. Took a split where the trail comes in that takes you straight back to Bald Hill. 13:17. Continued on the road up the hill to the bridge and doubled back. Turned right at the trail to Bald Hill. At Bald Hill turned left at the boulder to the barn. At the junction at the road that climbs to the top of Bald Hill, took a split. 29:04. Ran up the muddy slippery road to the bench at the top of the hill and took a split. 38:10 (9:06 to climb the hill). Ran back down the hill and took another split. 43:35 (5:25 to run down). I noticed that I was day dreaming a little when I went down the hill. Ran back to the kiosk at my truck.

I had the heart rate monitor on. I averaged about 163bpm which is lower than what I consider to be a 4 effort, but it sure felt like one so that is how it is recorded. I'll also note that I didn't eat much yesterday.

Went for a ski at 6:30 this morning. Thought that the "highway of death" (1 mile stretch of road from my house to the nearest bike path) would be free of cars that early in the morning but I was wrong--got passed by 9 cars. Went to the skateboard park loop and back home.
