Monday Jul 31

Bicycle 1:00:00 [1]
Rode to the post office in Corvallis before going to work. Normally I go to the Philomath post office, but I would have had to wait 10 minutes for it to open, so I thought I would go for the longer ride to Corvallis where I waited in line for 30 minutes. Dang.

Orienteering race 1:45:42 [3] *** 8.06 km (13:07 / km)
19c shoes: Jala X-Controls sz 9.5
Fin 5 Day 5 H40A
I was feeling the couple of weeks of orienteering in my tired legs. There were some rocky areas that I found to be difficult to run in. Was sloppy early in the race, and dropped 5 minutes on control #6. I kept trying to infer where I was from a sandy area that I could see. I could also see a hill that I had visited earlier. Unfortunately, I couldn't triangulate on the control. Found out in the post race review, that the sandy area I was looking at was not what I thought it was, so that explained everything. Finally found the control by carefully attacking from that known hill. Should have done it much earlier.

placing: 50/53 winner: 57:58

Thursday Jul 13

Orienteering race 45:41 [3] *** 4.07 km (11:13 / km)
9c shoes: Jala X-Controls sz 9.5

Again lots of trails. Not too many problems.

placing: 52/55 winner: 27:13
map: Munakukkula, Liperi, near Joensuu, Finland

Tuesday Jul 11

Orienteering race 1:34:00 [3] *** 8.78 km (10:42 / km)
13c shoes: Jala X-Controls sz 9.5
Fin 5 Day 3 H40A
Was giving someone a ride to Helsinki, so I had to have a decent race for us to leave on time. Unfortunately, I sprained my ankle on the way to #3 which made me lose my concentration and blow it big time. Of course, #3 was at the opposite corner of the map from the finish, so I got a couple more controls (#4 was quite fun, 600-700m with no trials) on the way out to the road, then jogged in.

placing: dnf winner: 52:54
map: Louhilampi, Liperi, Kontiolahti, near Joensuu, Finland

Monday Jul 10

Orienteering race 1:09:44 [3] *** 6.87 km (10:09 / km)
16c shoes: Jala X-Controls sz 9.5
Fin5 Day 2 H40A
We had a few controls away from the trails which were fun. I didn't make many mistakes. No big ones, just slow.

placing: 46/55 winner: 41:08
map: Lykynlampi, Kontiolahti, near Joensuu, Finland

Sunday Jul 9

Event: Fin5

Orienteering race 1:19:44 [3] *** 6.84 km (11:39 / km)
12c shoes: Jala X-Controls sz 9.5
Fin5 Day 1 H40A
While we were in the finish chute, we could see the "runners" take off on an immediate 4 contour steep climb! Yikes! Decent run. Like Austria, not many of the controls were very far from trails. The second to last control was the most difficult requiring some detailed orienteering to find control in an area with lots of depressions and poor visibility.

placing: 49/58 winner: 45:57
map: Utranharju, Kontiolahti, near Joensuu, Finland

Friday Jul 7

Orienteering race 1:34:10 [3] *** 9.1 km (10:21 / km) +290m 8:56 / km
23c shoes: Jala X-Controls sz 9.5
World Masters B Final Men's 40
Decent run. Messed up one control for a couple of minutes, otherwise didn't make any significant errors. Again, lots of trails, but the terrain was much more complicated. The forest was more open than we thought it would be.

placing: 56/77 winner: 1:10:28
map: Witzelsberg, Weiner Neustadt (just south of Vienna), Austria

Wednesday Jul 5

Orienteering race 1:34:53 [3] *** 8.3 km (11:26 / km) +230m 10:02 / km
24c shoes: Jala X-Controls sz 9.5
World Masters Qualifier 2 Men's 40
An okay run, but I had couple of multi-minute mistakes. Again, many trails. At least this time I didn't stop at the go control. While I sitting there grumping about my run, my friend Ingrid walked up with her little smiling baby (Emily), it instantly put me in a good mood.

placing: 35/51 winner's time: 55:00
map: Bad Fischau, Wiener Neustadt (just south of Vienna), Austria

Tuesday Jul 4

Orienteering race 1:25:59 [3] *** 8.3 km (10:22 / km) +305m 8:45 / km
13c shoes: Jala X-Controls sz 9.5
World Masters Qualifier 1 Men's 40
Had a pretty good run. The second leg was about 2Km! Too slow compared to the other runners, but I had fun. The many trails made it easy to get close before having to do any real navigating. Closer in, there were so many trails that it got confusing. They had a taped route to the go control, where I started walking after punching. After 12s of walking realized I had another control to get to!

placing: 38/54 winner's time: 52:43
map: Bad Fischau, Wiener Neustadt (just south of Vienna), Austria

Monday Jul 3

Orienteering 1:30:00 [1]
shoes: Jala X-Controls sz 9.5
WMOC Model Event

Went out with Paula on 2 out of the 3 model maps--the one by the qualifiers and the one by the final. Heard that the third map was really green and full of nettles so we avoided that one. We practiced technique and checked out how things were mapped. Had an enjoyable time. Liked the area for the qualifiers better than the final. The final area seemed more green and much more detailed. The qualifier map was very open and runnable.
