Tuesday Feb 28

Orienteering 32:00 [2]*** 3 km (10:40 / km)
spiked:6/7c
Raan the Permanent course at Wirth. Very low effort, and had to stop 1 minute to make sure two dogs weren't going to bite me. Pretty much on with the navigation. Blew an easy control by running by it on the trail. Maybe 3 feet from it.
Saw a lot of tracks and 1 albino squirrel that seemed nervous about the melting snow.
This is a rest week, but the weather was too good to pass up.
Trail Running (with map) 15:00 [2]2.5 km (6:00 / km)
Just rounding out the workout. No real purpose, but checking map details along the way. Need to develop a bag of tricks for training that I fall back on when I'm out with a map.

Saturday Feb 25

Note
Birkibeiner 51k Freestyle
C • Under 3 hours 4
Skate Skiing race 2:58:11 [4]51 km (3:30 / km)
Birkie. I made my goal of under 3 hours...barely. Snow was fast in some spots, really slow in others. Temperature was perfect. Not sure if I could have skied any faster.

Thursday Feb 23

Skate Skiing 45:00 [1]7 km (6:26 / km) +60m 6:10 / km
Skied from Fish Hatchery up the hill past Hwy 77. Just an excuse to get out and take a look at the last major hill on the Birkie Course. Snow is dry and abrasive.

Wednesday Feb 22

Roller Skiing 30:00 [2]7 km (4:17 / km)
Didn't want to drive to snow. Just a quick easy ski on River Rd.

Tuesday Feb 21

Note
(rest day)

Monday Feb 20

Skate Skiing 1:00:00 [2]15 km (4:00 / km)
Skied at Elm Creek. It was a little icy, but okay. Just aa nice easy ski with 5 30 second speed-ups for fun. No ski Tuesday, short ski Wednesday and very short ski on Thursday or Friday in Hayward.

Sunday Feb 19

Classic Skiing 1:00:00 [3]12 km (5:00 / km)
Planned one last ski of two hours or so at Baker. Got there. opened the ski bag "Oh ^$^*" I had grabbed Molly's bag. Her classic skis and poles. I had planned to skate. Used her equipment and settled for an hour. After getting over my stupidity, I actually had a fun ski.

Saturday Feb 18

Running 36:35 [3]4.5 mi (8:07 / mi)
Franklin/Lake Loop. Didn't want to ski in the cold temps, but needed a short run to maintain sanity. One of the six days a year that a gym membership would be nice.

Wednesday Feb 15

Skate Skiing 1:11:00 [3]20 km (3:33 / km)
8 laps of the manmade loop at Elm Creek. The other trails were rated as poor, so I didn't even bother to check them out. Exercise in mental torture at this point after skiing in such great conditions in Hayward last weekend. No leg pain at all.

Tuesday Feb 14

Running 37:16 [3]4.5 mi (8:17 / mi)
Franklin Lake Loop. Barely made it out the door. Hate to be running the week before Birkie week, but gotta do what you gotta do. Did six 1 minute speed ups (75% full effort) to break up run.
C • Couldn't not comment.... 4

Monday Feb 13

Running 58:27 [2]7.0 mi (8:20 / mi)
Ford/Lake loop. Nice easy run. About 2 1/2 minutes slower than my normal pace. Would rather be skiing, but didn't have the travel time.

Sunday Feb 12

Note
North End Classic 24k
Note
Decided not to press luck and race classic. Probably would have been fine, but no need. Had fun walking with JDAWG in the Cookie Classic

Kick Wax. Temperature and Toko rec. was for white with blue if more kick was needed. No good. Because of fresh snow and high humidity (I think) had to apply viola which was about 10 degrees warmer. Seemed to work for Molly

Saturday Feb 11

Note
Pre-Birkie 26k Freestyle
Skate Skiing race 1:12:41 [4]23 km (3:10 / km)
Pre-Birkie. Had a very good race. I need to be more agressive at the start and get away with less traffic. Skied hard. No pain in my leg. Was surprised when I saw the finiish line approach after only 23 k. Had asked one of the race folks before the race and he confirmed that it was 26.
Course was in great shape.
Skate Skiing warm up/down 25:00 [2]5 km (5:00 / km)
Classic Skiing 2:05:00 [2]23 km (5:26 / km)
Skied with Molly from OO to Fish Hatchery. Not sure I could classic, but had very little pain in my leg. Perfect day. Kick wax was a little weird. More in note on Sunday. Total of over 50 k for the day.

Friday Feb 10

Note
(rest day)
Travel to Hayward for races.

Thursday Feb 9

Skate Skiing 1:07:00 [3]20 km (3:21 / km)
weight:177lbs (injured)
Skied with Dave at French. Leg felt much better skaating than classic. Plan to race on Saturday at least. It is aamaazing how a little snow can change the conditions so much. First time this year that I haven't skied on fast hard pack. Felt a little like work. It was great.

Wednesday Feb 8

Classic Skiing 50:00 [2]7.5 km (6:40 / km)
Elm Creek with Molly. Planned to ski longer, but tweaked something in my leg that I thought was all healed. Cut the night short. Not sure if I will be able to race this weekend or not. Planned on both Sat and Sun. Completely bummed at this point. I think I'll have a Big Mac for lunch.

Tuesday Feb 7

Running 43:16 [2]4.5 mi (9:36 / mi)
Franklin/Lake loop with going down along the river on the East by Shriner's. Ran really easy, kind of checking my leg. No pain during the run or this morning after. This appears to be my go to run when I have a period of inactivity that I need to break. A way to ease back into the routine.

Sunday Feb 5

Note
City of Lakes Loppet 35k Freestyle
Skate Skiing race 1:33:02 [3]29 km (3:12 / km)
Fun race. Leg very sore from last week's issues. Not able to push very hard. Crashed hard on one icy downhill. Good training ski.
C • Back in business 9

Thursday Feb 2

Note
I think I'm back in business. A 10 minute, all-out, game of lazer tag and no pain.
I plan to ski the City of Lakes, but not sure if I will be able to go hard or not. I want to try to get on my skis a little bit tomorrow.
