Sunday Apr 30

Rollerboard 12:00 [2]
3 X 15 on new board that was delivered today. I can see why skiers use these. Just trying it out. Will need to fit it in on a regular basis.

Saturday Apr 29

Note
MNOC Afton
Orienteering race 1:53:00 [4]*** 8.4 km (13:27 / km) +330m 11:15 / km
spiked:7/11c
A fairly good run at Afton. Did not heed Ian's advice on # 1. "Know whether you need to be at the top or the bottom, and don't mess it up." And overran the control. Fairly clean run then until #8 where I went to the wrong rock pile in scattered trees. Number 10, the feature and control code were wrong on the clue sheet, so I spent a long time looking. Got a 20 minute adjustment after the finish for that.
Cold, wet and rainy yeeha.
C • Only a 4? 5
Orienteering (control retreival) 1:05:00 [3]*** 5 km (13:00 / km) +60m 12:16 / km
spiked:6/6c
Long, wet, and cold control retreival. I was spent when I got back. Sunday rest day.

Note
Adventure Run #3
Orienteering race (Adventure Run) 56:00 [3]*** 6 km (9:20 / km)
spiked:12/15c
Final event at Terrace Oaks with Molly. Normal loop first, then last 7 controls any order. A couple of small mistakes and one 2-3 minute mistake. Good run on a fun course.
Orienteering (shadow and control retrie) 47:00 [2]4 km (11:45 / km)
Followed Dog and Dan, and then got a coupe controls after dark.

Wednesday Apr 26

Trail Running 1:00:00 [2]6.5 mi (9:13 / mi)
Out and back along the Mississippi. Got to finally explore a set of caves that have always been blocked by high water. Also saw an eagle.

Monday Apr 24

Mtn Biking (commute) 25:00 [2]6.0 mi (4:09 / mi)
Other intervals 15:00 [5]
Played a game I named "Poison" with students today. It involved sprinting around after frisbees and throwing a Kush ball at them. Actually worked pretty hard. 5 X 3 minute games.

Sunday Apr 23

Note
MNOC Sand Dunes
Orienteering race 1:12:00 [4]**** 6.1 km (11:48 / km) +100m 10:55 / km
spiked:16/18c
Had a great run going at Sand Dunes until I blew number 17 in a big way (5-7 minutes for sure, possibly longer.) Then after I relocated and got the control, I ran right by 18 and had to circle back. Extremely happy with my first 16. Extremely unhappy in my last two.
C • It ain't over til it's over (or the fat lady sings) 4
Orienteering (control retrieval) 40:00 [2]*** 3 km (13:20 / km)
spiked:5/5c

Saturday Apr 22

Hiking 45:00 [1]** 3 km (15:00 / km)
spiked:2/2c
Bug O at Arboretum. Jasper was having fun and the course looked like a good time. We had to bail early as JDwag was due for a nap. (One he never actually took.)
Note
While I wanted to log three hours and 30 controls for tree planting (It was after all an orienteering event) Pete said he could not support that. Had a blast as a wood chip and hydrology specialist.

Friday Apr 21

Note
Adventure Run #2
Mtn Biking (commute) 25:00 [2]6.0 mi (4:09 / mi)
Might include an errand or two today.
Orienteering race 46:00 [3]*** 5 km (9:12 / km)
spiked:11/12c
Adventure Run #2 at Terrace Oaks. Had a really good run on a fun course with a number of interesting route choice legs. Only miss was number 6. I came up between two small hills. Not sure which one the boulder was on. Maybe off by 15 or 20 meters, but Molly saw the control and called me over. Finish was fun because we were with two other teams with less than 300 meters to the finish. Molly and I cut across the woods to a short trail and pushed hard. We gained about 30 seconds in that distance. Very cool.
Orienteering 35:00 [1]*** 2 km (17:30 / km)
spiked:3/3c
Control retrieval with Molly navigating. Saw one deer as the woods were getting dark.

Thursday Apr 20

Mtn Biking (commute) 25:00 [2]6.0 mi (4:09 / mi)

Wednesday Apr 19

Mtn Biking (commute) 25:00 [2]6.0 mi (4:09 / mi)
Note
Just wanted to mess around while I proctor the MCA's I just realized a couple days ago that theree are multiple weekends coming up with multiple O days. Anybody for a Bug-O sprint cahmpionship on saturday?
Good schedule coming up
Trail Running 40:00 [4]4.5 mi (8:52 / mi)
Franklin/Lake Loop going opposite direction than normal. Rediscovered trails down near the river on the east side of the run. Added time and challenge. Legs feeling tired. I have no idea what from.

Tuesday Apr 18

Mtn Biking (commute) 25:00 [2]6.0 mi (4:09 / mi)
To work and back. Big night planned after I pick Jasper up in the Chariot, but I'll log that separately.
Mtn Biking (with trailer) 42:00 [2]7.7 mi (5:26 / mi)
Picked Jasper up at daycare and rode over to Highland for haircut and Chipotle. Planned to take a longer route home but the rain was moving in. We were able to stop and eat at a little park near the river. Three turkey vultures were circling and riding on the drafts. Pretty cool. Ran around the park a couple times with Jasper, who did some orienteering.

Monday Apr 17

Mtn Biking (commute) 40:00 [2]9.0 mi (4:27 / mi)
to work and back.
Then to get Jasper from daycare

Sunday Apr 16

Note
As usual the trip to St. Louis involved little activity and a lot of unhealthy food. Upside is that running around with jasper at least gets us off of the couch. Not enough to log, but not a complete slug either.
The run on the Lewis and Clark Trail is always a highlight. No traveling in the near future and a break coming up at school, so hopefully hours will jump a little.
Mtn Biking (commuting) 15:00 [2]3.0 mi (4:59 / mi)
Riding around trying to find an open coffee shop to do some work at. Took a little detour on the way home so I could log it. Nothing big, but after 9 hours in the car, it felt good.

Friday Apr 14

Note
Adventure Run #1 7:00 Terrace Oaks. Not gonna make it. St. Louis for Easter.
Trail Running 1:52:00 [2]9.0 mi (12:26 / mi)
Ran the Lewis and clark Trail in St. Louis. Its pretty much a given that we'll do it while we're here. Began at 8:15 or so at 71 and high humidity. By the end it was over 80 degrees and if possible it was more humid.
Ran most of it with Molly, ran ahead near the end and then back to her. Walked some as well.
Had hoped to do 13, but family schedule prevented that.

Tuesday Apr 11

Walking 1:00:00 [1]2.5 mi (24:00 / mi)
Hanging Posters with students at Marydale Park and Swede Hollow Park. Decent way to spend work hours.
Mtn Biking hills 50:00 [4]12.0 mi (4:09 / mi)
A brand new workout that was awesome. It will be good to do it another time when I am not limited on time. About another set is all I probably would have wanted to do.
Its so good I named it. The 5 Hills.
Riding north on River Rd. At the bottom of Franklin Hill you immediately turn uphill onto Franklin Terrace. Go up. Come back down. Keep going north on River Rd. At the next street go up hill and come back down. Then keep going north. At 22nds Ave go up and then come back down. Then keep going north on River Rd to the top of the hill by the Red Cross.
Then do each of the hills on the way going back South. If I had more time I could just continue the loop. I got 10 hills in today. Legs are fairly tired

Monday Apr 10

Walking 25:00 [1]2.0 mi (12:29 / mi)
Hanging signs with students at Lake Phalen for the Spring Park Clean-up. Tough day at work. That made up for having to break up a fight on Friday.
Saw a loon and what I think might have been an otter or muskrat maybe.
Running 45:00 [2]5.0 mi (9:00 / mi)
Planned to do the Ford/Lake loop (7 miles) but got talking to a neighbor for too long. Just did an out and back on West River Rd. It was a perfect night. the bats are out and the reflection of the moon on the river was great.
I should not be surprised when I don't feel that great running after a full dinner.

Saturday Apr 8

Note
MNOC Lebanon Hills Night-O Not gonna Make it. Omaha for a regatta.

Thursday Apr 6

Other (Ropes Course) 25:00 [1]
Went to Camp Eden Wood with students. Got to do two of the elements. there was a third that was pretty cool, but had to let the students go first. Pretty good strength work.
Climbing 40:00 [2]
After school took students climbing at Vertical Endeavors. With the auto belay system, they really take care of themselves. Got to climb as much as I had the energy to. I have lost any skill I was ever able to achieve at climbing.

Wednesday Apr 5

Mtn Biking (commute) 25:00 [2]6.0 mi (4:09 / mi)
To work and home
Mtn Biking (Road) 38:00 [2]10.0 mi (3:48 / mi)
Biked from our house along River Rd and the trails to the entrance of Fort Snelling. then back to Pike Island for a run
Trail Running (with pack) 35:00 [2]4.0 mi (8:44 / mi)
Run around length of Pike Island. Near the end I saw a herd--that's right a herd--of deer. 13 that I counted, but there could have been more.
Mtn Biking 41:00 [2]10.0 mi (4:06 / mi)
Just as I got back on the bike, an eagle flew over. It felt like the Wild Kingdom tonight. Opposite of outbound trip. Included going back up the hill to the entrance of Fort Snelling. Nice night of training.

Tuesday Apr 4

Trail Running 45:00 [3]5.0 mi (9:00 / mi)
Ran the Franklin Lake loop with a short addition south of Lake St. Ran in to an old friend and stopped for about 10 minutes so time may be off by a minute or 2.

Sunday Apr 2

Running warm up/down 10:00 [2]1.0 mi (10:00 / mi)
Didn't Feel much like being out in the cold rain, so I decided on a short but intense run.
Running 13:39 [5]1.8 mi (7:35 / mi)
Went out 7 minutes then came back looking for a negative split. Took 21 seconds off, so maybe I could have pushed a little more on the way out. Doubt that I ran a 6:39 mile so I gave myself a little short of a mile. Glad to get back home to a warm shower.

Saturday Apr 1

Trail Running 58:00 [4]10 km (5:48 / km)
Trail Run on the Birkie Trail. Surprisingly it is still mostly snow covered. Ran along the side, but did not expect anyone to still be skiing. One guy out skiing a 1 k section right near the trailhead. I wasn't running fast, but the hills and the snow, upped the effort.
