Friday Jun 30 | ||
| Paddling 4:00:00 [1] | ||
| Intro class and rescues on Lake Superior in Munising. A lot of time talking and standing around (not included in time), but then when we got on the water it was well worth it.
Water was warm according to instructor. But it was a shock when I first went in. It was also the first time I have been upside down in the water inside a kayak. Water was calm all day.
| Paddling 2:00:00 [3] 3.0 mi (39:59 / mi) | ||
| Easy paddle across the channel to Grand Island. Had intended to go further, but the class had lasted much longer than we expected. It was hot, and I was ready to be done when we got to the campsite--a boat accessible only site. Just as we arrived we saw renegade backpackers running to the site. We camped--following park guidelines--off trail and on top of a spur.
Foreshadowing: We woke up at 3:30 to howling winds. Fell back alseep fitfully at 5:30.
Thursday Jun 29 | ||
| Mtn Biking 1:35:00 [2] 10.1 mi (9:24 / mi) | ||
| Bruno's Run just south of Munising. Great trail. Unbelievable terrain. Perfect weather. If you are ever in this area, it is well worth the trip. | ||
Wednesday Jun 28 | ||
| Hiking 4:05:00 [2] 9.5 mi (25:46 / mi) | ||
| Chapel Beach Mosquito river loop near Munising in the Pictured Rockes National Park. I have always wanted to see this area, and it is well worth it. A perfect day of hiking with not seeing a ton of other people. | ||
Tuesday Jun 27 | ||
| Hiking 30:00 [1] 1.5 mi (20:00 / mi) | ||
| Hiking from campsite at Bay Furnace near Munising. Mainly just blowing some time. the sun is up until nearly 10:00 and the hour time change meant I wasn't really ready for bed.
It sounds like the death match was fun, but I'll settle for my week this time.
Monday Jun 26 | ||
| Note | ||
| Mandatory Gear Update. Read below.
One horse fell on the leg of a member of the Dancing Pandas. Another report said that a member of East Wind was kicked by their horse. An athlete on MandatoryGear.com was bucked off their horse, witnesses said. All athletes involved in the horse mishaps were able to continue racing, according to volunteers on the scene.
Sunday Jun 25 | ||
| Running 1:18:00 [3] 10.0 mi (7:48 / mi) | ||
| Franklin/Ford loop. Felt good the whole way, and legs don't feel that tired after. Distance is an estimate based on time. | ||
| Mtn Biking (with trailer) 50:00 [2] 10.5 mi (4:46 / mi) | ||
| Biked with Molly and Jasper to birthday party. Had to leave early, so Molly hauled Jasper home. | ||
| Swimming 15:00 [3] | ||
| 4 laps at Lake Nokomis after riding to birthday party. Able to do nearly the entire distance freestyle. Evn after I swallowed some water in mild chop. That last couple of weekends have helped me get more comfortable in the water. Now I just need to start doing more distance. | ||
Saturday Jun 24 | ||
| Orienteering (course setting) 1:05:00 [2] *** 5 km (13:00 / km) | ||
| spiked:11/11c | ||
| Battle Creek for Poison Death Match Score-O. I think it should be a lot of fun. I saw one deer, one bird that may have been a wood duck, and a bunch of black flies. | ||

Thursday Jun 22 | ||
| Mtn Biking (with trailer) 45:00 [3] 6.0 mi (7:30 / mi) | ||
| Picked Jasper up from daycare. Went to Minnehaha Falls, then rambled back home after playing in the creek and hiking and playing at the playground. | ||
Wednesday Jun 21 | ||
| Walking 1:35:00 [1] 5.5 mi (17:16 / mi) | ||
| Two laps around Nokomis with Molly. Very nice night for a walk. | ||

| Tuesday Night Training--7:00
Parking Lot on Lower Afton Rd Pairs Running
| Mtn Biking (with trailer) 20:00 [2] 4.0 mi (4:59 / mi) | ||
| Picked Jasper up from daycare and took a little longer route home. His route choice was suspect. | ||
| Orienteering (course setting) 20:00 [2] *** 2 km (10:00 / km) | ||
| spiked:4/4c | ||
| Placed tape for training | ||
| Orienteering 41:36 [5] *** 5.1 mi (8:09 / mi) | ||
| spiked:15/16c | ||
| Ran course that I set. I tried to keep up with Graham, and did for roughly half the distance. Then lost contact. Saw him approaching last control, and took a different way. Got there about 5 seconds after he did and he outsprinted me to the finish.
Just to be clear. I set the course. He was running on a map with no trails, and he still beat me.
| Mtn Biking 40:00 [3] 5.0 mi (7:59 / mi) +150m 4:33 / km | ||
| Rode from parking lot to the Battle Creek mountain biking area with Justin, Graham and Molly M. Didn't have a lot of daylight left, but it was some fun riding. Cut it a little short when Justin broke a spoke. | ||
Monday Jun 19 | ||
| Orienteering (course setting) 1:40:00 [2] *** 5 km (20:00 / km) | ||
| spiked:11/11c | ||
| Setting for training tomorrow night. Some open running, but a lot of walking and looking around. | ||
Sunday Jun 18 | ||
| Swimming 15:22 [4] 0.4 mi (38:24 / mi) | ||
| First leg of training tri. Thanks Steve. Two laps of roughly .2 mile swim. I came up on shore and caught my breath before second lap. Water was choppy and a swallowed a good bit of water. | ||
| Road Biking 32:04 [4] 10.0 mi (3:13 / mi) | ||
| Two loops of five mile leg. Strong winds. Last one out of the water, but a quick transition--Included in time. Felt pretty good. According to bike computer avg. speed was 19. Hit 27 mph on a relatively flat course. Gotta love a tailwind. Passed a number of people on the bike. Saw Ian just as I was coming in from the leg. | ||
| Running 27:00 [4] 4.0 mi (6:45 / mi) | ||
| Felt a little twingy and a bit of an upset stomach going into the run. Ian had 3 minutes on me according to Stepehen. Times were pretty close for each mile. Caught Ian just after the last turn around. It helped that he was wearing a white shirt, and everyone else had on red. It gave me a target, and he had no one running in front of him that had done the whole distance.
Good day overall. Still need lots of work on the swim.
| C • Nice run , tough swim 4 | ||
Saturday Jun 17 | ||
| Trail Running 1:00:00 [3] 7.0 mi (8:34 / mi) | ||
| Mostly trail run Ford Lake Loop. Hot. | ||
Friday Jun 16 | ||
| Note | ||
| (rest day) | ||
| Should count the half mile sprint to the car from the Minneapolis Criterium. The rain and lightening came; they kept racing. Finally they called it and the one time we don't bring rain jackets we have to run back to the car in pouring rain. | ||
Thursday Jun 15 | ||
| Hiking 35:00 [2] 1.5 mi (23:20 / mi) | ||
| Multiple short hikes over the course of two days at Hyland. Highlight was walking with Jasper and Molly past the marsh on the west side of the park where 50 egrets were hangin out. In the trees, in the water, on shore.
Another good one was the night hike with the few students who were interested.
| Mtn Biking (with trailer) 30:00 [3] 5.0 mi (6:00 / mi) | ||
| Picked Jasper up from daycare. In a perfect example of how AP helps motivation, I chose to ride my bike rather than take the car. Then, I didn't just ride straight home. I took the long way, so that it was enough to log. Not sure that it was high quality training, but it was better than doing nothing. | ||
Wednesday Jun 14 | ||
| Paddling 1:15:00 [1] 1.5 mi (49:59 / mi) | ||
| Two different times out with students while camping at Hyland Park in Bloomington. Time is a bit of an estimate. We were on the water for a total of two hours, but we didn't move a ton. Got out in the single kayak for a good chunk of time so that was fun. | ||
Tuesday Jun 13 | ||
| Note | ||
| Tuesday Night Training--Battle Creek 7:00
Focus:bearing/distance possibly with contour only or no trail map.
| Orienteering 1:50:00 [2] *** 5 km (22:00 / km) | ||
| spiked:15/16c | ||
| O practice at Battle Creek. No trails maap. Time includes setting and checking a couple of controls and control retreival. Followed Ian along much of the course and he talked his way through whaat he was doing.
Conversation afterwards was equally educational. It is a good reminder that setting a good course includes a lot of decisions and different types of problems, not just obscure control placement.
Monday Jun 12 | ||
| Note | ||
| (rest day) | ||
| Had a dinner at school. Ate WAY too much and slept poorly and had weird dreams. I'll never do that again. Until next time. | ||
Sunday Jun 11 | ||
| Mtn Biking (with Jasper) 45:00 [1] 4.0 mi (11:14 / mi) | ||
| I thought about whther or not to log this, but I figure it was like hiking on a bike. His stamina is really getting something to worry about, and just try to tell him its time to go home. Today--two trips to SA, one to the park, one long bike ride, laps around our block. And i know he and Molly rode over the Lake St. bridge together. | ||
| C • Movin on up! 1 | ||
| Swimming 20:00 [4] 0.5 km (40:00 / km) | ||
| Two separate swim legs at Tri Quest training. Had buoys set up for 400 yard course. Borrowed Stephen's wet suit (thanks again). First one I swam to the first buiy and back--not wanting to need to be rescued--then back and forth until the middle of the pack showed up to the beach.
Second, I decided to give it a go and use the safety boat if needed. The wetsuit helped, I made it and was second to the last out of the water. Some crawl, a lot of breast stroke, some side, and a good bit kicking on my back. The furthest I've ever swum.
| Road Biking 34:00 [4] 10.0 mi (3:24 / mi) | ||
| Two separate 5 mile bike legs. Time includes transition. Pushed pretty hard and felt pretty good. | ||
| Running 14:00 [4] 2.0 mi (7:00 / mi) | ||
| Two separate 1 mile runs. May have been just below 7 minute miles. On the second one I was fighting off cramps. Felt recovered pretty quickly after today's effort | ||
Saturday Jun 10 | ||
| Orienteering 1:36:00 [2] *** 5 km (19:12 / km) | ||
| spiked:10/10c | ||
| Setting for Tuesday night training. Very good day to be out. Not many bugs and cool. Saw one deer. I think this will be a challenging night for people. While I was out, Molly and Jasper bike around the trails and played at the playground. | ||
Friday Jun 9 | ||
| Mtn Biking (with trailer) 30:00 [2] 6.0 mi (4:59 / mi) | ||
| (rest day) | ||
| Rode to Minnehaha Park and back with Molly, Dave and Susan and the kids. Feeling kind of tired and sore. | ||
Thursday Jun 8 | ||
| Mtn Biking (commute) 45:00 [2] 9.0 mi (4:59 / mi) | ||
| Commute by way of Jdawg's daycare. Big dehydration headache this morning when I woke up. Need...More...Water! | ||
| Other 45:00 [2] | ||
| Kickball and volleyball with students at the park. | ||
Wednesday Jun 7 | ||
| Road Biking (commute) 25:00 [2] 6.0 mi (4:09 / mi) | ||
| Road Biking 1:31:00 [3] 22.6 mi (4:01 / mi) | ||
| Rode to Nokomis with Molly. After swimming we took the long way home. South around the airport and then up through Fort Snelling. Good night. | ||
| Swimming 30:00 [3] | ||
| 6 laps tonight and no time spent kicking while on my back. I was able to make it th elength of the buoys each time and then rested to nearly full recovery. Also some basic instruction that was very helpful from Molly. | ||
Tuesday Jun 6 | ||
| Note | ||
| Tuesday Night Training--Battle Creek 7:00
Mas Start Legs--Begin each leg of the course together and regroup at each control. Points awarded in order of arrival. Person with fewest points buys. Line-O Score-O tape removal Wear long pants and bug repellant
| Mtn Biking (with Trailer) 14:00 [2] 3.0 mi (4:40 / mi) | ||
| weight:175lbs | ||
| Took Jasper to daycare and then back home. Nearly got hit by a car on the way back. A guy was checking out a woman jogging, and never looked before he turned right at me. | ||
| C • sorry... 2 | ||
| Orienteering 1:50:00 [3] *** 7 km (15:43 / km) | ||
| spiked:15/17c | ||
| Training at Battle Creek with a little time before checking 1 control. Learned when setting on re-entrant to check from both top and bottom to confirm it is the right one.
Some intense legs with people nearly sprinting. Very fun.
Monday Jun 5 | ||
| Road Biking 40:00 [3] 12.75 mi (3:08 / mi) | ||
| Rode over to Lake Nokomis for more swim practice. As I approached Nokomis I realized just how windy it was. On way home I went south around the lake and back home. | ||
| Swimming 20:00 [4] 0.3 km (1:06:40 / km) | ||
| The water was really bad. A straight headwind going south. I wasn't able to swim freestyle into the wind. I couldn't figure out how to breathe through the waves. I did what might be called a breast stroke and then flipped over and kicked. I was able not to stop between the buoys.Heading with the wind I was able to actually swim 3/4 of the way freestyle.
Swim session ended with a big swallow of water and a coughing fit. Distance is a total estimate (5 1/2 laps between buoys)
Sunday Jun 4 | ||

| Orienteering race (Score-O) 45:22 [5] *** 3.75 km (12:06 / km) | ||

| Score-O Fun. Result-Not so much.
20--1.52 18--2.50 16--2.25 15--1.01 14--.48 7--4.40--40 second mistake 4--2.35 2--Miss. Spent 3-4 mins looking 5--16.49 Wandered around looking for this one with good attack point. Julia and Graham were wandering too. Makes me wonder a little about the placement. 11--15.21 Ran into barbed wire fence while running near Graham. then went down what looked like right gully and found a control for the relay course. then went to proper gully, and check control code, thought it was wrong one and ran past it. On way back down I punched. Probably the difference between on-time and not. Finish--3.23 According to Ian's time I was 30 seconds or so late. My watch put me at 22 seconds late and I started it when he said 15 seconds until the start. Controversy on the Course? Scullduggery afoot? Oh wait I still would have been 7 seconds late. Looking back at the map, I definitely could have made some higher percentage decisions on control attempts. Maybe should have spent a few more seconds on that before I took off for an outliying control.
| C • Timing 3 | ||
| Orienteering race 13:00 [5] 1.92 km (6:46 / km) | ||

| Went out with Chris Fischer. It was kind of fun to talk about what we were looking at to make route decisions and some of the mistakes we tend to make and possible areas for improvement. | ||
Saturday Jun 3 | ||
| Orienteering (course setting) 1:20:00 [2] 3 km (26:40 / km) | ||
| Finished setting control tape at Battle Creek. Coolest thing. Saw two great horned owls take off from a branch. Then sat and watched one for a few minutes. Being harassed by crows.(The owls not me) | ||
| C • where and when on Tuesday 2 | ||
| Swimming 15:00 [5] 0.25 km (1:00:00 / km) | ||
| Swimming is hard. Went to Nokomis to officially kick off my Fat Tire Tri Training. I think the furthest I swam at one time was about 30 yards. I have a lot of work to do to complete the swim portion safely. I haven't tried to swim any distance in years. My heart rate went through the roof and I tired very quickly. | ||
| C • Keep up the training for the swim 2 | ||
Friday Jun 2 | ||
| Mtn Biking 45:00 [2] 9.0 mi (4:59 / mi) | ||
| Rode to the Prospect Park Community Fair. Had to take the long way there so we could stop by Chipotle. Way home aws more direct. Distance is an estimate. | ||
Thursday Jun 1 | ||
| Mtn Biking (commute) 45:00 [2] 9.0 mi (4:59 / mi) | ||
| Jasper to daycare then to work and home | ||
| Mtn Biking (with trailer) 1:10:00 [3] 15.0 mi (4:40 / mi) | ||
| Took Jasper to an "Evening at the Confluence" concert series at Fort Snelling State Park. Had a picnic and listened to music. Stopped by the beach for a quick swim. Not sure if I showed him something really cool or freaked him out by having him stand still and look at the sunfish that swam really close.
Workout averaged a 3 intensity. Pretty easy on the way there. Fairly intense on the way back--running late for bedtime.
| Note | ||
| In my first move toward triathlon training, I took students to the new water park near the Mall of America. Nearly counted this as workout--stair climbing--but couldn't pull the trigger. It is pretty cool, but I'm not sure its worth the price. Kids loved it | ||
