| Orienteering 1:11:00 [2]*** 5 km (14:12 / km) | ||

| More tape hanging at Battle Creek. Everything was going well until the rain came. I personally didn't mind getting wet, but when I started it was sunny and I hadn't even thought of putting my map in a bag. Luckily I was on my way back to the car, so I just tucked it under my shirt and put it over a vent to dry as I drove to another parking lot. When I got back out of the car 8 minutes later it was perfectly sunny. Go figure.
Only miss was on one of the small ponds, the vegetaion was so thick I couldn't see exactly where I was or make out the shape of the pond. I decided not to put a control there.
Tuesday Sep 25 | ||
| Orienteering 45:00 [2]*** 3.0 mi (14:59 / mi) | ||
| spiked:5/5c shoes: Vasque Spur | ||
| Hanging tape for O event at Battle Creek. Highlight was seeing a turkey up in a tree and catching deer eyes glowing in the dark with my headlamp. Even though I know the park pretty well, I had to cut it short to avoid making a mistake because of the dark. | ||
Monday Sep 24 | ||
| Erg 30:00 [4]8 km (3:45 / km) | ||
| Had to move novice practice inside, so I erged with the rowers. It's been awhile. Distance is estimate. | ||
Sunday Sep 23 | ||
| Hiking 50:00 [1]2.0 mi (24:59 / mi) | ||
| Hiking at Seeley Hills with Rena in the backpack while Jasper Mtn biked. Highlights were the perfect weather, Jasper's crash caused by a wet root (they still get me sometimes too), Rena's great attitude in the backpack, and the coolest was seeing Jasper successfully ride down a rocky and rutted hill. Actually I didn't see it. I came to the hill and expected to see his body tangled in his bike halfway down. Instead he was running up from the bottom yelling about how he had ridden it and hadn't even fallen.
Just comparing my mood today to last week after a bad bike o. Maybe I should just hike more in the woods with the kids. But I am also extremely pleased with my run yesterday, so I am sure that has something to do with it.

| Birkie Trail Run Marathon Relay--3 person team | ||
| Trail Running race 43:20 [5]5.9 mi (7:20 / mi) vdot: 44.4 | ||
| shoes: Vasque Spur | ||
| 2nd leg of Birkie Trail Run relay. Timber Trail to Boedecker Road. This includes the high point at the Seeley Fire Tower and a long climb right before the end. Got passed by 3 guys who were way faster. Passed 4 people. Felt strong. Only had to walk the very last steep part of the Boedecker hill. | ||
| Trail Running race 28:00 [5]3.91 mi (7:09 / mi) vdot: 44.6 | ||
| shoes: Vasque Spur | ||
| 5th leg of relay. A little tough getting going. Passed two people in the first 500 meters, then felt good for a while, then just trying to maintain pace. Wasn't sure I was doing it. Caught one more person just before the handoff, but she was able to sprint just ahead.
What a fun event. After the age handicap we came in third in the 3 person relay. The weather was perfect and the colors were spectacular.

Friday Sep 21 | ||
| Mtn Biking (commute) 15:00 [2]3.0 mi (4:59 / mi) | ||
| Hey, I'm desperate to log. Headed to Hayward for the Birkie Trail run relay tomorrow. | ||
Tuesday Sep 18 | ||
| Erg 20:00 [3]5 km (4:00 / km) | ||
| Couldn't get on the water with the novices, so we erged. I could have gotten 30 minutes in, but I actually needed to coach some. | ||
Sunday Sep 16 | ||
| Mtn Biking (MTB-O) 1:39:00 [3]*** 10.0 mi (9:53 / mi) | ||
| spiked:5/7c | ||
| BLAH! When did I begin to think that I knew how to navigate? Messed up control 1. Then got in a groove, then blew by a trail junction and spent the next 30 minutes trying to get back on the map. Finally figured it out and finished the course.
One thing that really stuck with me and actually took away some of the enjoyment of the day. Every single person I saw (15 or so) wanted to talk about where we were. That was when they looked up from the posted trail map with the "you are here" sign. One guy actually got mad at me when I said "I'm not on the map," but did not want his help to relocate. He said well "there's one up there then" and pointed up into the trees. Worst part about it, they probably all beat me.

| MNOC--Murphy
Will not be in attendance. Molly is doing Pre-fat, and I am doing MTB-O on Sunday
| Mtn Biking 50:00 [3]8.0 mi (6:14 / mi) | ||
| A short ride on the Hayward cluster trails, riding from Molly's parents. I did the Bar Stool loop, then when I crossed the Birkie Trail the second time I ran to just past Gravel Pit Road. Finished up and headed back to the house to cut a fallen tree up.
One of the main reasons for the ride was to try out the map case mount for my mountain bike. It's a cool toy. A perfect afternoon.
| Trail Running 32:00 [2]3.5 mi (9:08 / mi) | ||
| shoes: Vasque Spur | ||
| Birkie Trail out and back. At one point I thought "Only 5 more minutes then I CAN turn around." Then I realized I'm an idiot. A perfect day on the trail in early fall and I am counting down until I GET to turn around. Mood dramatically improved after the needed kick in the butt. | ||
Friday Sep 14 | ||
| Mtn Biking (commute) 15:00 [2]3.0 mi (4:59 / mi) | ||
| to work. Didn't include the 5 minute ride to the boathouse I get every morning or the trip over to SA for the milk to go with the rolls baking in the oven. | ||

| spiked:15/16c shoes: Vasque Spur | ||
| Happy with run. Only major mistake was 13. Probably 4 minutes. Very cautious approach and avoided trails even when they might have been faster.
Splits (So I don't accidentally erase them) Map--2.11 4.40, 4.08, 3.58, 3.49, 3.29, 2.07, 5.09, 2.41, 3.33, 3.03, 3.52, 4.43, 7.58, 1.10, 4.38, 2.34

Saturday Sep 8 | ||
| Road Biking 45:00 [3]15.0 mi (3:00 / mi) | ||
| Rode over to Stephen's garage sale, but apparantly I was a little late. Rode home disappointed at no new gear with an empty backpack. Didn't have much time today. Kid's birthday party to go to. | ||
Friday Sep 7 | ||
| Running 45:00 [3]4.5 mi (10:00 / mi) | ||
| shoes: Asics 2110 | ||
| Franklin/Lake loop with Rena in the Chariot and Jasper on his bike. He is no longer the limiting factor on speed. Snuck this in before a picnic with Jasper's school friends. | ||
Wednesday Sep 5 | ||
| Mtn Biking (with trailer) 40:00 [1]4.0 mi (10:00 / mi) | ||
| (rest day) | ||
| With Jasper, Rena and Molly just before kids' bedtime. Rena fell asleep almost immediately. Molly got sucked in to following a police car to gawk at a bike v. car accident and Jasper and I pedaled to to RR track on the greenway then home. Nice way to end the evening. | ||
Tuesday Sep 4 | ||
| Mtn Biking (Road) 1:05:00 [4]16.7 mi (3:53 / mi) | ||
| TNT with Pete. First and last legs of night. From my house to Wirth on Greenway and then back after mtn biking and running. This was exactly the sort of workout I needed. High intensity for me nearly the entire way, with just a few slow downs for traffic or when we felt like talking.
Ian, I am sure still reeling with shame from MSP last Tuesday night, was surprisingly absent.

| Mtn Biking 35:00 [3]6.0 mi (5:49 / mi) | ||
| Cedar, and one complete loop at Wirth. Very fun, riding at a decent pace. | ||
| Trail Running 21:00 [5]2.7 mi (7:46 / mi) | ||
| shoes: Vasque Spur | ||
| Anyone needing a high intensity workout should join someone you know is faster than you and let ego do the rest. Pete let me lead on the running leg (same loop we had just ridden) and I started out way too fast. About 2/3 of the way through I cracked, and let him go by. Then I tried to keep up which was work even though I think he took it easy on me.
I think the loop might be just a bit longer than 2.7, but still, I was looking for the end well before it came into view. A bunch of water and Clif blocks and back onto the bike for home. Overall, an excellent training session.
Monday Sep 3 | ||
| Running 56:00 [3]7.0 mi (7:59 / mi) | ||
| shoes: Asics 2110 | ||
| Ran to Nokomis where Molly and the kids had gone sailing with friends. I wasn't sure if I was going to be running back or not, so the pace was nice and slow. Ended up hitching a ride back with the family. | ||
Sunday Sep 2 | ||
| Mtn Biking 2:08:00 [3]16.0 mi (7:59 / mi) | ||
| Mountain biking with Molly on new trails at Murphy. A nice day. Dropped the kids off with friends and actually got away for awhile. Wish I had more than donuts for breakfast by the end. | ||
Saturday Sep 1 | ||
| Running 53:00 [3]7.0 mi (7:33 / mi) | ||
| shoes: Asics 2110 | ||
| Ford/Lake loop in the AM. Felt pretty good. | ||
| Mtn Biking (road with Jasper) 55:00 [1]7.0 mi (7:51 / mi) | ||
| Rode with Jasper on the greenway past the midtown Global market and back. He was spent by the time we got back. 3 water breaks and a full Clif bar. | ||
