Friday Mar 31

Running 24:00 [2]3.0 mi (7:59 / mi) +50m 4:44 / km
Ran to work so that we can get a jumpstart on heading north after school. Kind of a fun way to start the day.

Wednesday Mar 29

Orienteering 1:31:00 [3]*** 7 km (13:00 / km)
spiked:8/11c
Pre-ran AR #1 after dark. Note: Blue tape is hard to find in the dark. I counted a control as a spike if I was on the feature and just had to find the tape. The three I had mistakes on were minor and I was within meters of correct place each time.
Fun night in the woods, but took a beating. Rolled both ankles and fell hard on my arm. Buckthorn removal project is a must at Terrace Oaks.
C • buckthorn at Terrace Oaks 1

Tuesday Mar 28

Note
(rest day)
All ready to head out to pre-run AR #1 with Molly and then decided to bag it and go see Syriana instead. $2 Tuesday at the Riverview. I think this is the first movie we've gone to see since Crash came out.

Monday Mar 27

Hiking 30:00 [1]3 km (10:00 / km) +30m 9:31 / km
Hiking at Richardson Nature Center with Jdawg. Highlights included seeing the owl in the nature center have lunch. Mice are best served up cold according to the staff.
Trail Running 42:52 [3]4.5 mi (9:31 / mi)
Out and back on the west side of the river. Went south as far as I could then turned north and went to Franklin Bridge and back. It is so much fun running in slushy wet snow. It reminds me of the times I used to get grounded as a kid for getting my clothes wet and muddy.
C • Grounded again? 1

Sunday Mar 26

Other (family activity) 40:00 [1]3.0 mi (13:19 / mi)
A variety of unrelated activities today that ended up being worth logging. A mile bike ride with Jasper and Molly to breakfast at a friiend's house. Biking and shoveling and football later with Jasper. Then, running with Jasper. We did three blocks of full pace for him.
C • Terrace Oaks vetting 2

Orienteering 1:30:00 [3]*** 7 km (12:51 / km)
spiked:14/16c
Distance is estimate. Putting out controls. Contour only map. Made a couple interesting mistakes on that. It was odd that Molly, I and two other women who I should know seemed to make the exact same mistakes. It would have seemed morelikely that we would all make different mistakes.
Orienteering race 9:46 [5]*** 1.8 km (5:26 / km) +30m 5:01 / km
spiked:7/8c
Ran sprint course, and i while I knew where some of the controls were, most had been moved since I vetted. One mistake that for sure cost me 15-20 seconds.

Thursday Mar 23

Running 53:36 [3]7.0 mi (7:38 / mi)
Ford/Lake Loop. Fairly good effort. Intensity is probably a 2.5. A little damp and chilly. Legs are still sore from more running this week
Note
Thought about logging an hour of bowling. I mean my arm is tired. This is mainly an excuse to log that I had my highest score ever today. 189 If I don't become a professional orienteer I may have to try bowling
C • that gives me an idea..... 10

Wednesday Mar 22

Orienteering 45:00 [4]*** 4.5 km (10:00 / km)
spiked:9/9c
Vetting advanced controls at Hyland. Molly ran much of the advanced course, and i went out and checked controls. I counted 7 deer, 1 hunting owl, and two very nervous rabbits.
Did much of this after dark and counted controls as spikes even though I had to look around for the tape. Surveyor's tape is hard to see after dark.

Tuesday Mar 21

Trail Running 40:00 [4]4.5 mi (8:52 / mi)
Franklin/Lake loop on trail as much as possible. Probably about 60% on trail. Still plenty of ice and snow down by the river.
Other (Sledding) 25:00 [1]+150m
Possibly the last day of sledding unless we get more snow. Did enough trips up the hill to count it.

Sunday Mar 19

Orienteering 1:30:00 [2]6 km (15:00 / km)
spiked:32/34c
Setting for Hyland clinic with Pete. Fun to be out in the snow. Taped and checked about 36 controls. I think people will want the snow to melt by next weekend.

Saturday Mar 18

Other 1:45:00 [1]2.0 mi (52:29 / mi)
Hanging out with Jasper while Molly skied at Hyland. We skied, I carried him. We sledded, I carried him. We walked, I carried him. It was a perfect day.
C • not fair.... 2
Skate Skiing 55:00 [3]17 km (3:14 / km)
My turn to ski while Molly sledded with Jasper. Conditions were beginning to soften up pretty significantly. It will be interesting to see what Hyland looks like tomorrow and next week for the Skills clinic. Fun ski considering last week I was running on the trails and there was no snow to be found.
Mtn Biking (Road) 1:16:00 [2]18.3 mi (4:09 / mi)
Rode my mountain bike home from Hyland. This is what I hope to do more of this year. Stack a few short training sessions on top of one another. That includes active family time as a portion of my overall time for the day.
I also realized that the only mountain biking I did last year was on trails. The vast majority of AR's have a good bit of pavement. But all of the road riding we did last summer was on road bikes. Its time to get used to the resistance.
This was a good day. Let's see how I feel tomorrow.

Friday Mar 17

Other 30:00 [1]+250m
sledding with Jasper after work. What is sledding if not a hill workout?

Thursday Mar 16

Other (sledding) 45:00 [2]+180m
Sledding with students from school.

Wednesday Mar 15

Classic Skiing 1:35:00 [2]15 km (6:20 / km)
Skied at Lebanon Hills for the first time. It was outstanding. Nice easy ski with Molly. Had the headlamps, but only used them to look at the maps. I have been wanting to ski these trails for 3 years or so, but we have never had good conditions and the time line up.
Not sure if this is the exact section for the night-O, but it should be fun.

Monday Mar 13

Walking 25:00 [1]1.5 mi (16:39 / mi)
Normally wouldn't count walking--as I didn't the two previous days--but 6-8 inches of fresh snow made it a bit of work. So what the heck. Hope it is only the first entry for the day.
Classic Skiing 1:25:00 [2]5 km (17:00 / km)
Its great to be a teacher. School was closed and Molly and I headed down to the river on waxless skis. It was awesome. The trails were obscured by downed and bowed trees, but being intrepid orienteers we pushed on. A highlight was skiing on the beach just a couple feet from the Mississippi. Although I did get the odd sense that someone was wishing I might fall in.
Mtn Biking (with trailer) 23:00 [2]3.0 mi (7:40 / mi)
Decided to go get Jasper with the Chariot since I had the time. Stopped at the coffee shop along the way. For the record, ice is slippery. Riding along one second, slamming into the ground the next. Luckily it was before I picked him up. Fun ride. I need to do more winter riding next year.

Saturday Mar 11

Trail Running long 1:18:00 [2]9.0 mi (8:39 / mi)
Just in case you were wondering, Hyland is not skiable. Nice long easy run after a nap in the car with Jasper while Molly ran. Distance is a very rough estimate. Very fun day except when I ran by where Ian dropped me at the Minnegoat. Back on the Prairie trail near the nature center. Darn control #5
C • dropped by Ian 4

Friday Mar 10

Mtn Biking (with trailer) 50:00 [2]9.0 mi (5:33 / mi)
To Minnehaha Park to play on the jungle gym swing and slide (or as i like to call it mystery challenge training). then on to the dog park and back.

Thursday Mar 9

Mtn Biking (road) 26:00 [4]6.8 mi (3:50 / mi)
A quick out and back on River Road before going to get Jasper with the Chariot. Fun to be on the new bike. Trek replaced my frame last fall after the Chequamagon. It had cracked while doing the mtn bike-O. Think its Karma?
C • Cracked frame?? 2
Mtn Biking (with trailer) 34:00 [3]6.2 mi (5:28 / mi)
Picked Jasper up from daycare and then went to Minnehaha Park to play. Then back home.

Wednesday Mar 8

Orienteering 1:06:52 [4]*** 6.33 km (10:34 / km)
spiked:16/18c
Ran red course I set at Battle Creek. Got there at dusk and ran the majority at night. It was well worth going back to run a course I set. What I realized is that not once did I run that course in order. When Plamen and I vetted, we just checked to be sure location was accurate. If I had eun it in order, I would have made a couple changes. Plus, running at night and with snow and sloppy mud, made it fairly challenging.

Tuesday Mar 7

Note
weight:180lbs
Planned to run, but with the rain and the beginnings of a decent cold decided to take off. Not bad enough to put the "sick" label on my log. Another of the 6 days a year when a gym membership would be good.
Anyway I can log watching the Amazing Race?

Sunday Mar 5

Trail Running long 1:01:00 [2]* 6.0 mi (10:09 / mi)
Lowry Nature Center at Carver Park. This may look like a blog before I finish. It was a blast. Jasper and Molly were at a nature center program and I explored the trails. Good training because there was 3 or so inches of slushy snow. Also had two different maps to oreint at different scale, something I struggle with, so that was worth it.
Also saw some cool tracks and just as I finally saw some deer tracks I thought, "Wouldn't it be cool if these are fresh?" Not 5 seconds later I saw the flash of a deer tail. Upon stopping to look around I saw 3 more close by. Very cool.
Other (kick sled) 25:00 [2]
Kick sledding with Jasper and Molly as part of the nature program. Probably wouldn't have counted it, but Jasper wanted to do lap after lap. He took off once straight across the lake. Luckily the ice is thick and Molly is an experienced "sparker" It was a blast. We really need to move to Norway.

Saturday Mar 4

Mtn Biking (with trailer) 1:00:00 [3]11.0 mi (5:26 / mi)
Took Jasper for a short ride in the Chariot. Planned just to do Franklin/Lake, but he fell asleep so I did Ford/Lake too. It was actually a pretty nice day to be out on the bike.
Off-Trail Running 27:00 [4]5.5 km (4:55 / km)
Took advantage of a brief time window. Running along the Mississippi. Avoided trails as much as possible. This is something I want to do more of this year. (hence the new category) Hopefully it will help in orienteering.

Wednesday Mar 1

Trail Running 37:00 [2]5.5 km (6:44 / km)
Left at Albuquerque training has begun. Easy trail run at Battle Creek. Snowy and slushy the entire way. Saw one deer and Molly really enjoyed it when I pointed out where I had placed controls for the meet last spring. The quote I think was, "If you're doing that for my benefit, you don't have to." It was a fun evening.
