| Orienteering (course setting) 1:15:00 [2]*** 2 km (37:30 / km) | ||
| spiked:12/13c | ||
| Deciding activities and setting out tape for next Tuesday's training at Battle Creek. Moving very slow at times, jogging at others. Lots of undergrowth, but not horribly scratchy. See note on Tuesday's date for details of training.
Saw one hwak and surprisingly no deer.

| (rest day) | ||
| Had breakfast at Lake Maria before the mosquitos drove us home a little early. A fun time at Lake Calhoun with Jasper in the heat, but no training. | ||
Sunday May 28 | ||
| Note | ||
| MNOC Lake Maria AR Tune-up | ||
| Orienteering race 1:37:00 [4]*** 6.6 km (14:42 / km) | ||
| spiked:10/13c | ||
| Red Course at Lake Maria. Solid course by Mike and Julia. 2nd half was very challenging. HOT! Ian ran while it was much cooler, so once again he beat me. (It might have been the 10 min. or so of mistakes I made, but I'll blame the heat instead.) Used the trails as much as possible today. | ||
| C • 20 minutes of mistakes 2 | ||
| Orienteering (control retreival) 1:10:00 [2]*** 5 km (14:00 / km) | ||
| spiked:4/4c | ||
| Got to go back out and get controls. Walked the whole way. It allowed me to see one of the controls I messed up on very clearly. Educational. Time also includes a trek to check on an overtime participant. | ||
| Paddling 40:00 [1]1.5 mi (26:39 / mi) | ||
| Three separate paddles with Jasper at Lake Maria while working at the boat TA for the AR Tune-up. In between fishing water fights and pulling people out of boats when their legs cramped up. | ||
| C • Thanks for helping.... 1 | ||
Saturday May 27 | ||
| Hiking 1:20:00 [1]* 2.5 mi (31:59 / mi) | ||
| General Hiking at Lake Maria throughout the day. Campsite number 6 is very cool and easily accessible. Just a little to close to the group camp site. Think Karioke at 1:00. at least according to Julia and Mike. I was sound asleep with the loudest frogs I've ever heard right behind our site. | ||
Friday May 26 | ||
| Road Biking 1:08:00 [3]17.0 mi (3:59 / mi) | ||
| Commuted to work. One errand. Took long way home. South along east River Rd. Down through Hidden Falls Park. Over Hwy 5 bridge then up through Fort Snelling. Very warm. | ||
Thursday May 25 | ||
| Mtn Biking (commute) 45:00 [2]9.0 mi (4:59 / mi) | ||
| To Jdawg's daycare to work to home. | ||
Wednesday May 24 | ||
| Note | ||
| Molly and I are going to Lake Elmo tonight to do some control picking. We should be there by 6:30 and are starting from the play area parking lot near the swimming area if anybody wants to join us. | ||
| Orienteering 40:00 [3]*** 4 km (10:00 / km) | ||
| spiked:7/9c | ||
| Molly and I went out to Lake Elmo. I put some circles on the map and then we took turns running. My non-spiked controls included missing a marsh by 15 meters and not remembering/believing that a black line around water means uncrossable.
It was a fun way to spend an evening. JDawg got some map and compass time in too
| C • Black line problem again? 3 | ||
Tuesday May 23 | ||
| Running 50:00 [4]7.0 mi (7:08 / mi) | ||
| Went to do the Ford/Lake Loop. Planned to do it fairly slow, but I felt good, so I pushed the pace a little. Legs got pretty tired in the last mile or so, but a decent run. | ||
Monday May 22 | ||
| Note | ||
| (rest day) | ||
| Wouldn't have minded a workout, but needed to catch up on some things. Legs felt good for having spent so much time out on Sunday. | ||
Sunday May 21 | ||
| Orienteering race 3:39:00 [4]***** 13.5 km (16:13 / km) +330m 14:27 / km | ||
| spiked:15/21c | ||
| Team Trials Blue Course. Over my head. 3 major mistakes. Able to recover and get the last 5 controls okay.
Made a few small mistakes early, but felt pretty good with how things were going, until like Saturday the long leg (11). Did well with the rough navigation, but had to slow way down to concentrate. Missed the control by about 30 meters. Then things went down hill. All of a sudden I could not judge terrain or distance and made some HUGE mistakes. Especially #13. I have no idea what mistake I made. Wandered for a long time, finally re-oriented, re-attacked, and missed it again. I finally got things back together (Shorter legs and better catching features) and finished. This points to a lot of work to do.

Saturday May 20 | ||
| Orienteering race 1:13:00 [4]**** 5.67 km (12:52 / km) +115m 11:41 / km | ||
| spiked:14/17c | ||
| Fairly good run except for control 5. 20 minute mistake or more. Started fairly well. Small mistake on 2 then good until the long leg (5). Drifted north of my bearing, and was looking around the wrong streams for the control. Able to regroup and ran fairly well after that. Only a small mistake on 12.
Although it meant they were passing me, it was really cool to see the competitive runners make their way through the course.
| Hiking 40:00 [1]2.5 mi (16:00 / mi) | ||
| To the river and back for a swim. When you are trying to rinse off from orienteering, steep, muddy river banks are not your friend | ||
| Trail Running warm up/down 15:00 [2]1.0 mi (14:59 / mi) | ||

Wednesday May 17 | ||
| Trail Running 1:46:00 [2]8.0 mi (13:15 / mi) | ||
| Trail Running with Molly at Hyland. Great night, easy pace. Lots of wildlife. 8 or so deer, 2 pheasants, too many rabbits to count. Very good temperature.
Distance is a total guess based on time.
Tuesday May 16 | ||
| Running 46:21 [2]4.5 mi (10:17 / mi) +40m 6:14 / km | ||
| Franklin Lake loop. Very easy effort. Went down along the river on the St. Paul side | ||
Monday May 15 | ||
| Note | ||
| (rest day) | ||
| Legs really sore. Probably should have gone for a short run, but played soccer with Jasper and Molly. Then ate a lot of ice cream. | ||
Sunday May 14 | ||
| Note | ||
| MNOC Lake Elmo | ||
| Orienteering 44:00 [4]*** 3.9 mi (11:17 / mi) | ||
| spiked:9/10c | ||
| Ran Brown course at Lake Elmo. Shaky start due in large part to not being sure if I could actually get the run in with Jasper at the meet today. Blew control 1 by about a 4 minute mistake. then basically got them all okay. Kind of slow. My legs were definitely feeling yesterday's race. | ||
| Hiking (orienteering) 51:00 [1]*** 1.5 km (34:00 / km) | ||
| spiked:9/9c | ||
| Hiked white course with Jasper. He gets that the needle on the compass helps with direction. He just thinks that you are always supposed to go the way its pointing. | ||

| Adventure Race 12:25:00 [3]65.0 mi (11:27 / mi) | ||
| Wild AR 12 hour
Raced with MNOC, Mike Julia and Richard. Very different experience being on a 4 person team and not navigating. Richard and I paddled together and were okay and then for no apparant reason we fell apart. Later we figured out we were deflating which obviously had an impact on our speed and steering. Next major event: hiking up the mud hill of death was too much for Mikes bike. 13 miles into what ended up being about 50 miles of riding, his deraileur broke. We were able to fix it, but his chain then broke multiple times, and it was necessary to tow him on any uphills to avoid chain tension. Finally we got a replacement chain link from another team and the chain never broke again. He was stuck in a really easy gear, which was no good for road travel (towing him on the flats) but was perfect for the mountain bike section. We made it back--which may be among one of the better highlights of my short AR career--but didn't make the cut off for the rappel. Finished the course, but have no idea how/if we will be ranked.

| Mtn Biking (Road) 1:09:00 [3]15.4 mi (4:28 / mi) | ||
| South through Fort Snelling, up the hill then back to Pike island. Planned to run, but the island was closed. Rode through hidden falls and then to the boathouse.
Molly was pushing the pace at times on the way out.
| Hiking 35:00 [1]1.5 mi (23:20 / mi) | ||
| Not wanting to do too much before Sat. I talked Molly into hiking rather than running which was or original plan. We saw a turkey vulture leave the trees just above our heads.
Then to dinner at the Longfellow Grill
Tuesday May 9 | ||
| Mtn Biking (Road) 1:23:00 [3]22.3 mi (3:43 / mi) | ||
| Had to go to REI for some gear, so I rode my bike. Followed the Parkway to Lyndalethen south. On the way back I took Portland to the Parkway. | ||
Monday May 8 | ||
| Note | ||
| (rest day) | ||
| Decided to take a rest day with thunder booming and a number of things to do around the house. Not to worried if I have a couple extra days off this week with the long race on Sat. | ||
| C • ? 6 | ||
Sunday May 7 | ||
| Mtn Biking (with Trailer) 38:00 [2]6.7 mi (5:39 / mi) | ||
| Towed Jasper over to May Day Festival with Molly. After plenty of carnival food and people watching, we headed home. When Jasper fell asleep we added a little distance on along River Rd. Legs felt good after yesterday's long run. | ||
Saturday May 6 | ||
| Running long 1:55:00 [2]13.0 mi (8:51 / mi) | ||
| I did a new loop that Molly suggested and I remember Pete having done before as well. Lake St/Hwy 5. Down through Hidden Falls and across the bridge, then back up along the Fort Snelling bike trail. My distance is an estimate based on the time. | ||
Friday May 5 | ||
| Note | ||

Thursday May 4 | ||
| Paddling (kayak) 1:45:00 [2]8 km (13:08 / km) | ||
| Paddled from Lake St. to Washington Ave. Bridge and back. then down just past the boathouse and back up. Strong headwind going upriver and fast current. Going downstream took nearly half the time of going up.
First leg of long training day. Followed Portage of one boat from home. Molly spotted an eagle on the way back towards the boathouse.
| C • work??? 2 | ||
| Other (Portage and transitions) 1:00:00 [2]2.0 mi (29:59 / mi) | ||
| Includes the portage and return from the boathouse. Also transitions between paddle, bike and run. Also includes moving slow while eating at beginning of run leg of the day. | ||
| Mtn Biking (road and single track) 2:37:00 [3]26.2 mi (5:58 / mi) | ||
| Road from our house across mid-town greenway to Chain of Lakes parkway. C-worker Jesse joined Molly and I for this leg. Then to Theo Wirth Mountain biking area . I think about 5 miles worth of the trails. they were fun. Well worth the trip. Then back.
Part of the Greenway is closed so had to re-route on city streets. Tried out my new handlebar map holder. It rocks. Didn't have a detailed map, but it is obviously superior to hanging a map case around my neck.
| Trail Running (some pavement) 1:20:00 [2]7.0 mi (11:25 / mi) | ||
| Final leg of the day. Did Ford/Lake loop, utilizing all the trails possible. Hiked a good chunk early, then ran the second half. Not a blistering pace, but this was about endurance today, not speed.
It was a great day. | ||
Wednesday May 3 | ||
| Mtn Biking (with trailer) 1:15:00 [2]14.0 mi (5:21 / mi) | ||
| Took Jdawg to Fort Snelling. then checked out the visitors center and the beach. Fun way to spend a day. Of course he napped on the way back, which meant I didn't get one this afternoon. Tough life I lead. | ||
| C • Canoe-O Champs? 5 | ||
Tuesday May 2 | ||

| Mtn Biking (road) 54:00 [2]13.4 mi (4:01 / mi) +100m 2:27 / km | ||
