Monday Jul 31

Note
(rest day)
Went to Nokomis to escape heat. Swimming with Jasper I was mistaken for bait by a man-eating pan fish. Molly laughed at my misfortune until she was nipped in a much less sensitive place (her toe). then not so funny, huh?

We took a Seyvlar and as it was deflating around us played in the waves. I thought I could log about 15 minutes of paddling, but Molly said it was actually only about 8, so no log on that.
C • Bait ? Fishing license 3

Sunday Jul 30

Orienteering (course setting) 3:05:00 [2]*** 9 km (20:33 / km)
spiked:12/13c
A great day in the woods around Telemark. Pouring rain, lightning, more rain. It was perfect. Got out to more of the distant and advanced locations today. I am hoping to develop some interesting legs. On the way home I saw a small fox playing in the road.
C • Dedication ! 4

Saturday Jul 29

Orienteering (course setting) 3:15:00 [2]*** 9 km (21:40 / km)
spiked:19/19c
First look at planned courses for Telemark in Oct. Mostly walking, but when I realized I was going to be late getting home I ran the last bit. Got sidetracked by a snowshoe trail (unmapped on map I had with me)that ran nearly parallel with a leg I had planned. Lost contact with the map and had to follow it back to trail junction I knew.

On an unhappy note there appeared to be new logging roads and tape out for new trails.
C • I wonder if the new tape is fo... 2

Friday Jul 28

Running (with pack) 24:00 [3]3.0 mi (7:59 / mi)
Ran home from school at 2:00. It was a bit hot.
Wanted to log the 3 hours I spent at the water park with students, but couldn't find an appropriate category.

Thursday Jul 27

Orienteering (memory) 30:00 [2]*** 2.5 km (12:00 / km)
spiked:6/8c
Students took off with the other teacher, so I was able to do controls on the Lake Elmo POC by memory. wasn't very focused, so a couple dumb mistakes. It was fairly fun, but very hot.
Students had a good day. A couple seem to be picking it up and getting interested.

Wednesday Jul 26

Orienteering 45:00 [1]3 km (15:00 / km)
Instruction and shadowing students on the course we did last night. It actually worked out pretty well. By the time they did the second course they were generally heading in the right direction, and the two teams were running between controls.
Swimming 21:00 [3]0.8 km (26:15 / km)
13 laps at Highland Park Pool. 2 of the laps were with the kickboard, which was surprisingly difficult.

Tuesday Jul 25

Orienteering 31:00 [5]*** 4.7 km (6:36 / km)
spiked:17/20c weight:178lbs
Sprint O training at Como. Pete set two fun courses. Fun to run in the open areas. And, no, I don't feel badly for passing Ian at the end.
Running 27:00 [2]2.5 mi (10:48 / mi)
Trailed one of the teams from my adventure racing class on an urban orienteering course. Pacing is not one of their strong suits.

Monday Jul 24

Trail Running long 1:35:00 [3]* 9.0 mi (10:34 / mi) +300m 5:57 / km
shoes: Asics 2110
Ran at Jay Cooke State Park on the way home from Duluth. It was spectacular. Got a long way from the visitor's center and saw no one. It was hot.
Had a run in with a large doe that didn't really want to get out of the trail. I had visions of "When good animals go bad" in my head as I told it to "Git"

Sunday Jul 23

Note
(rest day)
Planned to go for a run on Barker's island in Superior, but just as I was leaving the lightning from a massive storm coming across LakeSuperior started. Plan to do longtrail run tomorrow.

Friday Jul 21

Road Biking (commute) 45:00 [3]10.0 mi (4:30 / mi)
To work plus home by way of University to River Rd.

Thursday Jul 20

Mtn Biking (with trailer) 40:00 [2]6.0 mi (6:40 / mi)
(rest day)
Picked Jasper up from daycare and took the long way home. Then rode over to Laura and Steve's to watch what Bob Roll (sp?) said was the best day of bike racing he has ever seen. Go Landis!!

Wednesday Jul 19

Orienteering race 27:01 [5]*** 2.4 km (11:15 / km)
spiked:6/9c
Sprint at Ian's. Started a little shaky. Made a huge mistake going to number 4 that would have been stopped if I had checked my compass while running on the trail. After I visited control 8, I recovered and had a pretty solid run.

HUMID
C • Races are up 2
Orienteering race 7:59 [5]*** 1.2 km (6:39 / km)
spiked:5/6c
After the micro-o I went back out. A little bobble on #2, then just fine. Interestingly, even though i felt really tired, my leg to the finish was the exact same time as it was on the long.

Orienteering 6:25 [1]*** 0.2 km (32:05 / km) +2m 30:33 / km
spiked:5/7c
Fun micro-o course at Ian's. I knew the light pole was taller than 1.5 m, but didn't see the mailbox for a long time. I'm not British or anything, but I'm not sure the mailbox is 1.5 meters either.
C • Micro O , pico O , nano O.... 4
Orienteering (control retreival) 46:00 [2]*** 2.8 km (16:26 / km)
spiked:12/12c
While everyone else sat at a boring meeting, I got to go get controls. Fun to go out at night. Never enough opportunities for that.

A very fun night overall.

Tuesday Jul 18

Mtn Biking (commute) 1:05:00 [2]9.0 mi (7:12 / mi)
weight:178lbs
To daycare and then work. Then back to daycare and home.
Mtn Biking 1:30:00 [3]22 km (4:05 / km)
Three laps at Wirth with Graham. Good ride. Got over to my friend's house in time to watch the finish of the Tour coverage. Excellent.

Monday Jul 17

Mtn Biking (with trailer) 1:00:00 [3]13.0 mi (4:36 / mi)
Rode with Jasper and Molly over to Lake Nokomis for some swimming. Fairly easy pace on the way over, but something got into Molly on the way back. Jasper gave away our strategy of sprinting ahead and what ensued was a mile long chase sequence. Jasper and I won.
Swimming 19:00 [3]
Best swim yet. First set did 5 laps between the buoys at the small beach at Nokomis (about 7:30) Then I did 7 laps without stopping or touching the ground (about 11:30). Felt really comfortable even after swallowing a few mouthfuls of water. Did a majority of crawl with nearly as much breast stroke--ugly--no flipping over on the back.

Sunday Jul 16

Road Biking 1:10:00 [4]20.0 mi (3:29 / mi) +150m 2:08 / km
Did the loop from my house, south through Fort Snelling, across Mendota, along the Mississippi up Ohio St hill up Grand Hill and back Summit to the house. Maybe my longest ride on the road bike this year. Normally i would have a lot more miles in than that. Pushed fairly hard in spots and climbed the hills fairly well.
The rain made it fairly nice.

Saturday Jul 15

Running 56:31 [3]7.0 mi (8:04 / mi)
shoes: Asics 2110
Ford/Lake loop before it got too hot. 51 of the 83 people I said "Good Morning" to responded in some way.
Mtn Biking (with trailer) 1:00:00 [2]9.0 mi (6:40 / mi)
Rode with Molly and Jasper over to watch the Lifetime Triathlon. Stopped at Mello Glaze for a doughnut along the way. There is something perfect about eating a doughnut and drinking coffee with people red-lining right in front of you.

Glad to get home and lay in front of the fan.

Friday Jul 14

Note
(rest day)
Had hoped to get a run in late, but ran out of steam. Have I mentioned I don't like the heat?
Though about counting horseback riding, but I think the horse (Bud) did all the work.

Thursday Jul 13

Road Biking 47:31 [3]13.0 mi (3:38 / mi)
Rode directly to Nokomis for a swim and then took the long way home. Around Nokomis over Ford Parkway, north on E River Rd and then back across Lake St. I have to check actual distance on computer. This is an estimate.
Swimming 12:00 [3]
At Nokomis small beach. Maybe the only guy in the lake not doing Lifetime this weekend.
Very happy with the swim. Two 6 minute sets. (4 laps) with only a minute or so break in between.

Wednesday Jul 12

Mtn Biking (with trailer) 35:00 [2]5.0 mi (7:00 / mi)
Took long way to and from daycare to get Jasper. Had hoped for a bit more, but I was running a little late.

Tuesday Jul 11

Orienteering 28:31 [4]*** 3.5 km (8:09 / km)
spiked:15/13c
Memory O set by Darryn at Battle Creek. Good exercise. Tried to keep up with Pete and Graham.
Mtn Biking 51:00 [3]7.0 mi (7:17 / mi) +200m 4:09 / km
After O training Pete and Graham and I checked out more of the trails at Battle Creek. Fun riding.

Monday Jul 10

Note
weight:179lbs
Two full weeks of vacation, camping, visitors and all the eating and drinking that go with that. Only up a couple pounds.
Now its all focused on the triathlon or as I am termining it Countdown to Cable; Nastiness in the Northwoods.
C • Do I sense a new fixation? 3
Running 1:00:00 [2]7.0 mi (8:34 / mi)
Ran the Franklin/Lake loop with Jasper in the Chariot. Then dropped him off and ran another 20 minutes.

Sunday Jul 9

Note
(rest day)
Feeling fairly tired and stiff. My shoulder hip and arm were fairly stiff from when I went over my handlebars. Luckily I landed in sand I think.

Travel back from AR.

Adventure Race race 4:59:00 [4]50 km (5:59 / km)
What a fun race. Graham was rock solid on navigation and the the rest of us kept up with him as best we could. We worked well together, especially for never having all ben together before the race. The course was probably one of the best that has been set for an adventure race I've done. A good combination of disciplines. Quality route selection and technical navigation, and high quality terrain.

I made a few mistakes because of not really having experience moving as fast as we were. Messed up on putting handlebars back in place, forgot trail shoes at the transition area, and I was the one who lost the e-punch. When you are moving slower you have time to think at the transition areas, yesterday was very different. It was a blast.

Distance is a complete estimate.
C • congratz on a great result.... 2

Friday Jul 7

Note
(rest day)
Travel to AR.

Thursday Jul 6

Mtn Biking (with trailer) 1:10:00 [3]14.0 mi (4:59 / mi)
Went with Jasper and Molly down to Fort Snelling State Park for Tangled Roots concert. Great night for a picnic and bluegrass.

Wednesday Jul 5

Mtn Biking 1:25:00 [3]20 km (4:15 / km)
Mountain biking at Wirth with Graham. 3 laps. It was great fun.
I think I am taking lessons from Stephen. I don't like to hug trees so much as try to tackle them. Score: Trees 2--Jerritt 0.
C • I prefer.... 1
Swimming 10:00 [3]
2 complete laps at Nokomis small beach. Entered not so much for time value, but so I could look back after my triumphant victory at Fat Tire Tri and share my training secrets with others.
C • keep on..... 1

Tuesday Jul 4

Running 39:00 [2]4.5 mi (8:39 / mi)
Franklin Lake loop. Easy effort before parents came over for a day of food and house projects.

Monday Jul 3

Note
(rest day)
Unplanned rest day. Had hoped to get something in, but no luck.

Sunday Jul 2

Note
(rest day)
A great week of vacation. I would highly recommend the Munisng area. We barely scratched the surface of what is available to do, and all of the trails we were on were top notch.

I am seriously thing about the Grand Island Trail Marathon next July.

Saturday Jul 1

Paddling 1:35:00 [4]3.0 mi (31:40 / mi)
When we woke up it seemed the wind had died down a bit. We then heard thunder. We had planned a full day of paddling, a little hiking, and then back to Molly's parents.

Not wanting to take chances with the weather on Lake Superior, we decided to head straight back to our van. that involved a mile or so crossing of the major channel. I think it was a good decision, because the wind never died down the rest of the day and we faced waves 3-4 feet high. That jumped to 6 feet or so when the tour boats went zinging by. It was definitely out of my comfort level. I think the boats we had could have handled bigger waves, but I'm not sure about the paddler. we made it safely across, and after lunch I played around in the waves for awhile.
