Thursday Aug 31 | ||
| Running (some trail) 57:30 [2]7.0 mi (8:12 / mi) | ||
| Ford/Lake loop with some trail on each side. Didn't feel that great, but it was a perfect night for a run. | ||
Wednesday Aug 30 | ||
| Note | ||
| (rest day) | ||
| Annual Pilgrimage to the Great MN feedfest--I mean State Fair. I plan on a pre and post trip weigh-in. For sure post trip. First stop, sweet corn. | ||
Tuesday Aug 29 | ||
| Note | ||
| (sick) (rest day) | ||
| Decided to take one more day off to get feeling better. | ||
Monday Aug 28 | ||

| (sick) (rest day) | ||
| Caught something that is going around. Bad swallower and fever. | ||

| Telemark Weekend Update
A lot of hanging tape this weekend. I think people will like the courses. Unfortunately, after discussions with Ian about realistic possibilities, I decided not to set a MTB-O. Plenty still on tap with the possibility of picking up 15 k of O in one weekend.
Sunday Aug 27 | ||
| Mtn Biking (course setting) 1:00:00 [3]10 km (6:00 / km) | ||
| Used mountain bike to get outlying controls. What a time saver and it was a blast. Very warm | ||
| Orienteering (course setting) 2:15:00 [2]**** 5 km (27:00 / km) | ||
| spiked:12/12c | ||
| Taped many of the advanced control locations for Telemark today. I am hoping some of the legs are fun. On the way the the NE, I saw 9 deer together crossing the road. Very warm | ||

| Cheq Fat Tire Tri--Short | ||
| Triathlon race 1:43:00 [4]14.8 mi (6:56 / mi) | ||
| Fat Tire Tri. Had a good race for my first effort. Swim went pretty well. Had a very fast transition--picked up about 6 spots--then could not get my breathing settled down for the bike. Passed more than I got passed by on this leg. Felt pretty good by the end. A made the mistake of drinking too much on the bike--a habit from AR--and paid for it on the run. Began with sloshing and then throwing up every few minutes through the finish. Only broke stride the first time. Rough times:Swim 12:30, Bike 59, Run 28. I'll edit when I check the results. 15th overall, 3rd in my age group. | ||

| Orienteering (course setting) 25:00 [1]*** 2 km (12:30 / km) | ||
| spiked:2/2c | ||
| Had Graham check a new trail that was added by the NE ski hut. I had mapped it fairly close, but had a small mistake. Had planned to do more work, but decided to postpone it until Sunday. | ||
Friday Aug 25 | ||
| Orienteering (course setting) 2:10:00 [2]*** 5 km (26:00 / km) | ||
| spiked:14/15c | ||
| Course setting at Telemark. To continue the pattern, it rained the entire time I was out. Found out all the flagging is for the proposed classic only Birkie Trail. Whoever is building it is laying it out even though they don't have permission to do any construction yet. We should lobby against this. | ||
Thursday Aug 24 | ||
| Note | ||
| (rest day) | ||
| Travel to Hayward | ||
Wednesday Aug 23 | ||
| Swimming 17:31 [3]0.5 km (35:02 / km) | ||
| Last swim before the triathlon. Went to Nokomis and did 6 laps at the big beach. I am ready to hammer. | ||
Tuesday Aug 22 | ||
| Road Biking (commute) 40:00 [2]8.0 mi (4:59 / mi) | ||
| To training at MLK center in St. Paul and home. | ||
| Swimming 15:00 [3]0.75 km (20:00 / km) | ||
| Swim at Lake Nokomis with the wetsuit. What a difference. Distance is a total guess, but I am very confident I will not be the one pulled out of the water by the safety crew on Saturday. | ||
| Running 21:09 [2]2.75 mi (7:41 / mi) | ||
| Once around Nokomis after the swim. Nice and easy. I did not go across Cedar to do the complete loop. I think the distance is close. | ||
Monday Aug 21 | ||

| Quotes from an actual conversation while hiking with JDAWG at French Park after picking up the wetsuit from O-Steve.
"Daddy, Why does Stephen sleep with his skis?" "Very good question Jasper." "Where does he wax his skis?" "I'll have to ask him." "When will you ask him?" I did finally clarify that I thought Stephen slept in another room, but that I couldn't confirm it. Thanks for the loaning of the suit. It should help me greatly

Sunday Aug 20 | ||
| Paddling 2:15:00 [3]5.0 mi (27:00 / mi) | ||
| Paddled back to the car. Pat and I actually paddled fairly hard on the way out. Horses back to the barn I think. | ||
| Hiking (Portaging) 1:15:00 [2]2.0 mi (37:29 / mi) | ||
| Same as way in, but did the long portage in a single trip. | ||
Saturday Aug 19 | ||
| Paddling 4:30:00 [2]8.0 mi (33:44 / mi) | ||
| Day trip out and back. Perfect weather. Paddled through an area of an old fire. Wildflowers and small trees are making a comeback. Very cool. Fishing again very good. Saw a moose on the way back. To be more clear I saw a moose's butt on the way back. | ||
| Hiking (Portaging) 45:00 [2]2.0 mi (22:30 / mi) | ||
| A number of short portages. | ||
Friday Aug 18 | ||
| Paddling 1:00:00 [1]2.0 mi (29:59 / mi) | ||
| Spent nearly the entire day in the canoe, but a lot of it was fishing. I think an hour is a fair entry for the work. The fishing was excellent. | ||
Thursday Aug 17 | ||
| Paddling 2:30:00 [2]5.0 mi (29:59 / mi) | ||
| Entered Boundary Waters at Brule Lake, headed to Swan. Not a long paddle, but we got a late start. Felt hungover from food poisoning or whatever it was from the night before. Great weather. | ||
| Hiking (portage) 1:45:00 [2]4.0 mi (26:15 / mi) | ||
| Portage on first day. One long portage (292 rods)that we did a double trip. A couple of other short portages. | ||
Wednesday Aug 16 | ||
| Note | ||
| (sick) | ||
| Became extremely ill on the way to Boundary Waters. Intestinal distress and shivering and sweating. Thought BWCA trip was over before it began. Slept some in the car, some on the bare ground, and somehow it was gone in the AM. My guess bad hollendaise sauce from Bridgeman's. | ||
Tuesday Aug 15 | ||
| Road Biking (commute) 25:00 [2]6.0 mi (4:09 / mi) | ||
Monday Aug 14 | ||
| Running 45:02 [4]7.0 mi (6:26 / mi) | ||
| Ford/Lake loop. New PR. I may have to check mileage, because I would be surprised if it is a full seven miles at this point. Good thing is that I am running this nearly 7 minutes faster than last year.
This loop has also kind of replaced the Franklin/Lake loop as my standard run.
Sunday Aug 13 | ||
| Paddling 15:00 [2] | ||
| Paddling back to the campsite after a successful fishing expedition. I got to just ride on the way out. A friendly brother-in-law and a tailwind allowed me to fish. | ||
Saturday Aug 12 | ||
| Paddling 15:00 [2]1.0 mi (14:59 / mi) | ||
| Took the kids out on a "fishing" expedition. Saw some cool things: a loon, a kingfisher, a beaver dam. | ||
Thursday Aug 10 | ||
| Swimming 10:00 [1] | ||
| Some swimming while at camp with students. Not much distance, but the lifeguard happened to be a former college swimmer who gave me some good instruction. | ||
| Other (Capture the flag) 50:00 [4] | ||
| Off trail running, intervals, strategy, what a blast. | ||
Wednesday Aug 9 | ||
| Note | ||
| Canoe-O Champs Peshtigo, WI ?? | ||
| Paddling 1:00:00 [2]2.5 mi (24:00 / mi) | ||
| Out to the end of the island in a sit on top kayak with a canoe paddle. Actually a fairly good workout. | ||
Tuesday Aug 8 | ||
| Trail Running 40:00 [3]4.5 mi (8:52 / mi) | ||
| shoes: Asics 2110 | ||
| Down along the Mississippi. Very easy effort, but felt tired the entire way. Maybe it was the bee sting I got just running along minding my own business. Only hard effort was running back past where I was stung.
Not sure how much loggable activity will take place for the next few days. Going with students to a camp, then camping this weekend up near Hayward with Jasper's cousins.
Monday Aug 7 | ||
| Note | ||
| weight:176lbs (rest day) | ||
| If my calculations are correct, i should be coming out of the water 5-7 minutes after Ian and Stephen. Is there enough distance on land to make that up?
The Conundrum at Cable Countdown has begun. Will Ian be healthy enough to race? Will Stephen find bliss on the mountain bike trails the day before and pedal for 4 hours? Will Graham forget to shave his legs? Answers in just short of 3 weeks.
| C • actually I am not planning to ... 3 | ||
Sunday Aug 6 | ||
| Road Biking 1:04:00 [2]15.5 mi (4:07 / mi) | ||
| Rode to Highland Park Pool for lap swim with Molly and Susan. We then took the long way back. Down to Hwy 5, across the River and past fort Snelling to West River Rd | ||
| Swimming 25:00 [3]0.8 km (31:15 / km) | ||
| Distance was either 800 or 900 meters. Lost count. Did 100 meter warm up, then swam continuously for 22 minutes. | ||
| Running 31:00 [4]4.5 mi (6:53 / mi) | ||
| shoes: Asics 2110 | ||
| Franklin/Lake loop after bike and swim. Felt really strong, but had not really pushed the bike or swim.
Very good day. | ||
Saturday Aug 5 | ||
| Road Biking 1:44:00 [3]32.0 mi (3:14 / mi) | ||
| Rode to and back from one of Jasper's friends birthday party in Burnsville. On the way there we mostly took in easy. On the way back we pushed it in a few spots. | ||
Friday Aug 4 | ||
| Note | ||
| (rest day) | ||
| Had hoped to get something in, but no luck. | ||
Thursday Aug 3 | ||
| Orienteering (course setting) 54:00 [3]*** 4.5 km (12:00 / km) | ||
| spiked:14/14c | ||
| Some days at work are better than others. "Had" to set controls for the last day of the adventure racing class. Was able to run the course I planned at Battle Creek. All on foot. Students weren't that interested in paddling or bikes. Fairly hot | ||
| Mtn Biking (with trailer) 1:10:00 [2]12.0 mi (5:49 / mi) | ||
| Took Jdawg to the Evening at the confluence series at Fort Snelling. Native American dancing. Pretty cool, and we saw racoon tracks down by the river and some stealth training for the Cheq Fat Tire going on.
Time slowed by transition at DQ on the way back. Passenger and engine were one dip cone heavier.
Wednesday Aug 2 | ||
| Note | ||
| (rest day) | ||
| Every once in a while you just have to mow the lawn. | ||
| C • Lawn Mowing 16 | ||
Tuesday Aug 1 | ||
| Running 50:02 [4]7.0 mi (7:08 / mi) | ||
| weight:173lbs | ||
| Ford/Lake loop in the AM in the rain. Excellent. Planned to do an easy run, but there was a guy in a yellow shirt just ahead and I have no other intensity on this week's calendar. Ended up with a new fast time on the loop.
* weight was after run, and before fluid replenishment.
