Tuesday Oct 31

Running 56:19 [2] 6.8 mi (8:17 / mi)
shoes: Asics 2110
Ford/Lake loop. Felt pretty good, but motivation still low. Had to resort to Jolly Ranchers to get through. I did see an eagle flying just above the trees and the weather felt like the last day of October should.
Note
Just looking at October stats. Not a bad month when you visit 126 controls and spend over 11 hours orienteering. Granted, most were setting, but the days up at Telemark were a blast.
C • 1000 controls by year end ? 2

Monday Oct 30

Note
weight:172lbs (rest day)
Pumpkin Carving. Why workout when the weather is nice? Wait until it drops 30 degrees.

Sunday Oct 29

Roller Skiing long 2:21:00 [2] 45 km (3:08 / km)
Joined a few friends at Hyland for a long roller ski. Beautiful day out, motivation low. Planned a 2-3 hour ski. Looked at my watch the first time at 24 minutes. Got better when we did some natural speed-ups.

Saturday Oct 28

Note
(rest day)
Last regatta of the year for Macalester, lasted the entire day. Wanted to get some workout in, but couldn't justify squeezing in before a birthday/halloween party. Took a short nap instead.

Friday Oct 27

Mtn Biking (Road) 1:40:00 [3] 39 km (2:34 / km)
Rode to Wirth Park, planning to do a loop on the mountain bike trails. Late start, detour on the greenway, a poor route choice and a headwind meant that I was running too late to do the loop, but a great ride anyway.
C • Wirth Park 3

Thursday Oct 26

Running 1:00:00 [2] 7.5 mi (7:59 / mi)
shoes: Vasques
Ford/Lake loop with extra distance around the neighborhood to get 1 hour. Nice day out. Not stiff or sore anymore.

Wednesday Oct 25

Note
weight:175lbs (rest day)

Tuesday Oct 24

Running 52:00 [2] 6.0 mi (8:39 / mi)
shoes: Vasques
Recovery run after the Goat. Legs very sore and right hamstring very tight. Felt warmed-up and looser by the end of the run.
Note
Was going to put this in Graham's log, but you can't comment if there are no entries present.

It has been firmly established in Jasper's mind that Graham is faster than me, and he takes every opportunity to remind me of that...
"Did Graham run the Minnegoat?"
"No"
"He's faster than you, dad."
"I know."
"Dad, I run faster than you."
"Oh really."
"Yeah. I run fast like Graham."
I sent him to bed without dinner. (After he ran his laps.)

Monday Oct 23

Note
(rest day)
Planned rest day. Legs pretty stiff. Should have had more water after the run. Very dehydrated even a day later. Legs stiff.

Sunday Oct 22

Minnegoat?
Orienteering race 2:32:00 [4] *** 14.4 km (10:33 / km) +250m 9:43 / km
spiked:24/28c (sick) shoes: Vasques
Minnegoat. Used Pete's distance. Ran mainly with pete and/or Stephen R. Had a good run. A couple dumb mistakes on trails that opened up Pete's initial gap. Started to feel tired by end of first loop. Ran second very conservatively. 2 minor mistakes on second loop. Started cramping pretty badly. My guess is I needed to drink more over the last couple days to battle cold.
Very happy with result. No mistake larger than 2 minutes or so, and 2nd place to Pete.
Orienteering (control retrieval) 1:10:00 [1] *** 2.5 km (28:00 / km)
spiked:16/16c shoes: Vasques
Totally spent, but had volunteered to do retrieval. Collected white and yellow controls. Mostly walking.

Saturday Oct 21

Note
(sick) (rest day)
C • Take it easy today! 2

Friday Oct 20

Note
MNOC Adventure Run--Hyland
Trail Running 34:00 [2] 4.0 mi (8:30 / mi)
(sick) shoes: Vasques
Short, easy run to try and loosen up my congestion and try out a foot pad I bought to try and help with some foot pain. Successful on both accounts.
Did not run adventure run becuase Molly was out of town. Jasper and I helped with registration and control retrieval.

Thursday Oct 19

Note
(rest day)
Not willing to say I'm sick yet, but decided to go home and lay on the couch instead of running. Thought rest was better than a workout. Not sure if I'm being smart or lazy.
C • What are you waiting for? 2

Wednesday Oct 18

Roller Skiing 1:30:00 [2] 25 km (3:36 / km)
Took the day off and celebrated with a roller ski. North on River Rd nearly to Broadway, then back to the mid-town greenway and nearly to Hiawatha. Then home. It started to rain about the last 20 minutes. Distance is estimate.

Tuesday Oct 17

Note
(rest day)
Drove home from St. Louis

Monday Oct 16

Running 40:00 [3] 5.0 mi (7:59 / mi)
shoes: Asics 2110
Squuezed a run in at my parents while Jasper took a nap. A fw hills whicxh was kind of nice in suburbia land. Windy and rainy.

Friday Oct 13

MNOC Adventure Run--Hyland
C • It looks like it will be a fun... 2
Orienteering race 1:02:30 [4] *** 6.6 km (9:28 / km)
spiked:9/11c shoes: Vasques
Had a good run going back and forth with Pete. Took the north route on way to 4 while he went south. I missed the control by about 30 meters and he moved past me. Caught him at number 6, but went to controll 11 after that. I read it as number 7. Silly mistake. Missed it a little and after I found it, figured out my mistake. After a minute or two of feeling sorry for myself, I decided to try to make up for the mistake. Had a clean and fast run after that. I was able to catch and pass the large group at control 10. Since I had already "scouted" 11 I could run that leg at full speed. Pleasantly surprised to find that only Pete beat me.
C • south... north? 2

Thursday Oct 12

Orienteering 46:55 [3] *** 4.5 km (10:26 / km)
spiked:20/22c
Permanent course at Elm Creek. It's great when work and fun comme together. I was supposed to take a class of mine camping, but because of the forecast I turned it into two day trips. Today I challenged them 14 v. 1 to a score-O. It may sound selfish, but it got them out in the woods, and it got me a workout. They actually did pretty well and had fun.
Climbing 45:00 [1]
Climbing at Vertical Endeavors with students. Got as much climbing in as I could handle.

Tuesday Oct 10

Running 51:22 [3] 6.5 mi (7:54 / mi)
Ford/Lake loop with Dave. Decent run. I need to measure the actual distance of this loop from my house. Definitely more than 6, but not quite 7 I think.
Strength 5:00 [1]
3 X 20 on the rollerboard. Alternating with Jasper.

Monday Oct 9

Note
(rest day)
Mowed the yard for the last time and had a good dinner. Next couple of weeks are going to be tough for training. Traveling to St. Louis, then Molly will be out of town. Maybe I'll just call it a long taper for the Minnegoat.

Sunday Oct 8

Orienteering (course setting) 50:00 [2] *** 2 km (25:00 / km)
spiked:7/7c
Setting controls for the sprint.

Saturday Oct 7

Event: MNOC Fall Orienteering Weekend

Orienteering 1:30:00 [2] *** 4 km (22:30 / km)
spiked:6/7c
Mapping the new trail and later in the day taping the sprint course.
Mtn Biking 30:00 [3] 4 km (7:30 / km)
Took a short ride to make an informal check on Molly's mom and her two friends who had been out on the orange course for 2 1/2 hours at that point. they were doing fine.

Friday Oct 6

Orienteering (course setting) 4:00:00 [2] *** 10 km (24:00 / km)
spiked:33/35c
Hanging controls and checking for Telemark. Highlight of the day. Walking in to one control, I saw a large black animal. For a half second I thought it was our dog Flink. then I realized it was a black bear about 15-20 meters away standing right next to the control and walking right at me. I yelled and it took off. First time I've ever seen a bear in the wild.
Missed one control by a little and missed another from 3 different directions. Had to have Paul double check me on that one.
Mtn Biking (course setting) 50:00 [3] 5 km (10:00 / km)
Getting around to the controls. Included one fun bushwack with the bike.

Thursday Oct 5

Note
(rest day)
Still wrapping things up for the weekend away.

Wednesday Oct 4

Note
(rest day)
Had to repair a boat that found a submerged rock. Then plenty of stuff to get done bfore heading up to Telemark on Friday AM.

Tuesday Oct 3

Running 20:00 [2] 2.5 mi (7:59 / mi)
Short jog with not much time so I decided to do hills. This was to the park and back
Trail Running hills 10:00 [5] +150m
shoes: Vasques
10 hills at local park. Not a lot of time today and kind of bored so this was the solution.

Monday Oct 2

Note
(rest day)
Unless you count the walk to DQ.

Sunday Oct 1

Road Biking 1:19:00 [4] 26.0 mi (3:01 / mi)
Rode the airport, Ohio St, Summit loop. Just tried to keep up with Dave. Great night and a really solid effort.
