Sunday Dec 31

Trail Running 1:58:00 [2]12.0 mi (9:50 / mi)
weight:173lbs shoes: Asics 2110
Met Justin and Molly at Jiffy Lube for a run in the wonderful RAIN. Headed over to Wirth, looped around and headed back in. Saw three does, one injured buck, and an owl.
I needed 1:44 today to make 365 hours for 2006. Had to work a little hard over the past few days to make it, but it was a fun week.

Saturday Dec 30

Skate Skiing 2:10:00 [3]32.5 km (4:00 / km)
Ugh! Elm Creek at about 7:30. It was already slushy. Not bad until the high school teams started showing up. Conditions made it a tough effort. Skied about 8 k less than the last time I skied for two hours. Just glad to have that one done.

Friday Dec 29

Trail Running 1:45:00 [2]11.5 mi (9:07 / mi)
shoes: Asics 2110
Wanted to get an early workout in on a day off. Planned to do the Ford/Franlin bridge loop, but just kept heading south when I got to Ford Ave. Down along Minnehaha Creek, then into the dog park. What a cool area. I have never been there before. Now I get why Pete runs there. I thought it would be swamped with dogs, but I only saw 3-4. Then back up along Minnehaha and home.
A few spots I could have used my Icebugs.
Running warm up/down 15:00 [1]1.0 mi (14:59 / mi)
shoes: Asics 2110
Jasper wanted to run with me after I got finished. A perfect warm down. He was rather ambitious and needed to be carried the last few blocks back toward home.

Thursday Dec 28

Trail Running 1:02:00 [2]6.5 mi (9:32 / mi)
shoes: Asics 2110
Ran at Wirth with Jesse. Would rather have been skiing there, but we did head over to check out the man-made loop. It would do, if you're REALLY desparate...oh wait we are.
Easy effort, and a lot of talking.

Tuesday Dec 26

Note
I have set a control picking course at Elm Creek. I have circled each corner of the man-made trail on the map. Each time I go by it tonight I will count it as a control.
That is twenty controls each lap. I am skiing classic tonight and plan to do at least 10 laps.
200 controls will put me well over 1000 for the year.

Classic Skiing 1:05:00 [3]17.5 km (3:43 / km)
Elm Creek with Dave P. Conditions good for universal klister or grip tape that Dave used. Got a late start, so we couldn't ski longer. Pretty good effort. Always fun to classic. Fell once when I lost concentration and was looking at the moon.

Monday Dec 25

Note
(rest day)
Possible loggable activities.
Stretching--reaching for Lego pieces to build objects ordered by Jdawg.
Strength--Lifting hand to mouth: breakfast egg dish, assorted candy, cookies, etc. beverages, ham, more egg dish.
Cardio--Walking up the sledding hill at Como. Actually went from the top once, should have worn a helmet.
Jogging--Had to run back home from friends house. (1 block) Thought I had left the stove on.
Courage training--trying to take a nap on the floor while Jdawg was playing. (Even though he says I was, I was not snoring.)
Mental--Winning SOUNDLY at Scrabble.

In other words it was a great day. Add to that a drill bit set, a ski scraper, wind pants, and a gift card at the coffee shop--outstanding.

Sunday Dec 24

Skate Skiing 2:10:00 [3]40 km (3:15 / km)
Got out to Elm Creek early (8:00) and the trail already looked well worn. Skied with Dave and got out before it got too warm and WAY to crowded. Probably a rest day tomorrow :)

Friday Dec 22

Classic Skiing 30:00 [1]2.5 km (12:00 / km)
Skiing with Jasper at Elm Creek. He was a little tired, so moved much slower than last time. Actually out for over an hour.
Classic Skiing 43:00 [3]11 km (3:55 / km)
One lap before Jasper woke up in the car. Then three more after he was done skiingplus 2 of the short loops. Conditions were very tough for classic. My hard wax was no good. I switched to Molly's skis that had grip tape and they worked until some fresh snow fell in the tracks, then there was no kick to be had there either. A fun day.

Thursday Dec 21

Note
Icebugs!
Orienteering (vetting) 1:30:00 [3]*** 8 km (11:15 / km)
spiked:15/16c shoes: Icebugs
Vetting for Winter AR. I need to look up from the map more. Running along the trail I was nearly sideswiped by a deer that I scared. I never saw it until it bolted across the trail just a few feet in front of me. That would have been some headline..."Jogger with map killed by deer". It was a perfect day to be out. The rain had turned to huge flakes ofsnow, and the deer were really active. Had kind of thought about bagging the trip. Extremely glad I did not. Icebugs.

Wednesday Dec 20

Note
weight:172lbs (rest day)
Starting to get a little cold. Planned to take today off.

Tuesday Dec 19

Classic Skiing 1:20:00 [2]16 km (5:00 / km)
Fun night at Elm Creek with O crowd (except those off relaxing in warmer climes). Time and distance are complete guesses. I stopped my watch at one point and forgot to restart. Lost track of how many rotations I did on the treadmill.

I think the training groups need to get a grip and learn some trail manners. They need to realize that the world does not actually revolve around them.
C • looks like you guys is working up an attitude! 1

Monday Dec 18

Running 40:27 [2]4.5 mi (8:59 / mi)
Franklin/Lake loop right about dusk. Legs felt good even after effort from yesterday. About halfway through started feeling sick to my stomach and slowed way down. Just happy to be finished and I felt fine almost immediately.

Sunday Dec 17

Skate Skiing 1:47:00 [3]32 km (3:21 / km)
Went to Elm Creek with Dave. Always have to work to keep up with him. We went just before dark and there was hardly anyone there. There is still a lot of snow, but it is kind of sugary. Took a while to get my snow legs and by the end we were both skiing faster with less effort than the first few laps.

Saturday Dec 16

Hiking 50:00 [1]** 4 km (12:30 / km)
Hiked the Lake Trail at Hyland with family. Took the Hyland map along for fun. Almost able to call it an instensity of 2 because the kids ran much of the way around the lake. Very fun hike, followed by "hockey" on the lake. The day also included a Candy Cane Hunt.

Friday Dec 15

Other (Roller Skating) 50:00 [2]12 km (4:10 / km)
Roller skating with students. Don't have any problem logging this one, especially with the two silver dollar sized blisters--one full of blood--that I got from tgreat rental skates.

Wednesday Dec 13

Roller Skiing 30:00 [3]8 km (3:45 / km)
Skied down to the base of the hill by Franklin and to do hill repeats. Skied home after I was finished. Skied hard enough to not call it warm-up warm-down.
Roller Skiing hills 37:00 [3]7 km (5:17 / km) +240m 4:31 / km
Skied the hill by Franklin. 6 reps of about 3:40. 3 times v1 to left and 3 to the right. Not pushing too haard, but had to work harder on the left to match times.

Tuesday Dec 12

Note
(rest day)
Meant to go for a run or roller ski, but got home late from work. The Holiday Train rocked. Jasper got to dance with the St. Paul Saints Pig.
C • What??! 7

Monday Dec 11

Orienteering (course setting) 58:00 [3]*** 5.5 km (10:33 / km)
spiked:19/21c
Setting training course at Como Park. Sprint style, so control locations were fairly straight forward. That doesn't mean that I wasn't able to misplace control #1.
Second control I missed I was suckered by a bridge that wasn't actually the one I wanted.
Orienteering 31:39 [5]*** 5.9 km (5:22 / km)
spiked:21/21c
Ran the course I had just finished setting. I was able to run all out. I tried to take different routes than others, but I then erased my splits so we couldn't compare. Fun group to run with.

Sunday Dec 10

Classic Skiing 1:15:00 [1]4 km (18:45 / km)
Skiing at Elm Creek with Jasper and Molly. What a fun day. This is the portion I skied with Jasper. Actually out for 2 hours. He skied two entire loops until his binding broke. He fell asleep in the car, napped for nearly three hours, woke up and ate like a fiend. Can you say bonk?
I could have stayed at Elm Creek all day.
C • Awesome! 3
Classic Skiing 26:00 [4]6 km (4:20 / km)
I got to ski 3 loops while Jasper and Molly got a snack. Skied most of it with a friend who was skating. Skied a little harder than I had planned. Very fun. Kick wax was non-existent. All I had done to prep the skis was scrape of the leaves that were on the bottom from last year and put 1 layer of red on. Oh well.

Saturday Dec 9

Mtn Biking 32:00 [2]** 8.1 km (3:57 / km)
I used the mountain bike to get around while vetting the Winter AR course. I am being harassed to get my log done and play with trains, so that is about all. Frozen, rutted sand is not that much fun.
Orienteering 1:30:00 [2]*** 5 km (18:00 / km)
spiked:10/12c
Vetting at Lake Elmo for winter AR. Still being harassed by JDAWG. Gotta go.

Friday Dec 8

Note
(rest day)
Oops! I went to sleep planning to head to Como park after work today to pre-run the training course. I woke up and immediately realized that I am responsible for a school dance tonight. That means picking up the speakers and balloons and setting up the sound system. No time for a workout. Had I thought of that yesterday I would have gone for a run this morning.

Thursday Dec 7

Note
(rest day)
Met with OSteve about maps for Winter AR. Plan to get out to Lake Elmo this weekend. I have to figure out how to not print the lines between controls for a portion of the map where you have choice in what order you do controls (something like 9A, 9B, 9C at the Hyland adventure runs.)
C • shhhhhhhhhh! 3

Wednesday Dec 6

Roller Skiing 1:04:00 [3]18 km (3:33 / km)
Temps right around 20. Windchill probably closing in on 0. One of those nights that it was tough to get out for rollerskiing--if I had actually been on snow it wouldn't have been hard to motivate at all-- but once I was out it was well worth it. Stayed warm. Western sky still kind of light and the pavement was good down to Fort Snelling and back.

Tuesday Dec 5

Note
(rest day)
Celebrated 34 years with a nap during 5:00 news. Then Lake St. Garage for dinner, and picking up our Christmas tree. Molly even let me watch the trash tv show "The Unit" without complaining.
What a day. Back to work on Wednesday.

Monday Dec 4

Note
(rest day)
Legs a little sore. Lots of scrapes, I did not find any more thorns in my scalp though.
C • wow... what a jump on a rest day 1

Sunday Dec 3

Orienteering race 2:03:00 [4]*** 14 km (8:47 / km) +300m 7:56 / km
spiked:28/25c shoes: Icebugs
Possum Trot. Challenging course, especially with the snow and ice. Icebugs were definitely worth the purchase. Good showing by the MN contingent.
Closer look at the map and more comments later.

I happened to be in the right place at the beginning. I saw Pete leading the group to number 2, but was far enough back to see Swampfox hesitate (maybe even bend down to tie shoe?), then Eric, then David F. peeled to the left up the road. That made my decision. From there I had to run hard to stay with them until the pace leveled off. With those guys plus Andy? most of first loop, a little off the back then regained. Not sure when Spike joined. David and I went north from the map exchange and were looking for skips which caused only mistake of the daay. We both ran righ past the trail we were aiming for. That opened the gap that we couldn't recover from Justin and Tom. I think south along the road was a better choice on that leg.
Then second loop ran a lot with David, Andy and Spike. Skipped 23 and never saw Andy again. Saw Justin and Tom leaving 24, but couldn't make up the time.
Running with David, I thought many times of taking the flatter route along road or open terrain, but couldn't justify the risk of a big mistake.
David gained the 15 seconds on me between control 29 and 30. Legs just couldn't respond.
C • wow...awesome result... 2

- Splits

Saturday Dec 2

Event: Possum Trot Weekend

Orienteering race 30:09 [4]*** 4 km (7:32 / km)
spiked:20/22c shoes: Icebugs
I beat Ian. More Later. Mt. O sprint. What a blast. Made 1 big mistake on #6. Ended up running a big chunk of the course with David F. from St. Louis. Had problems punching on a control and he opened a gap I couldn't close on the sprint to the finish.
C • beat Ian 1
Running warm up/down 10:00 [3]
Warm-up before sprint.

Sprint - Splits

Friday Dec 1

Note
(rest day)
Travel to Kansas City. Five people in our "cozy" room. Currently trying to warm it up with a travel hairdryer providerdby our host Days Inn. Ian complained about having to walk up the 3 flights of steps to our room. Too bad.
Looking forward to a fun day tomorrow after a good night of snuggling.
