Note
2007: The Year of House Projects
The overarching theme this year is flexibility. I have a number of things I want to accomplish, but they will all be based on not creating a ton of stress for the family. Most volume related goals are scaled back, but I will try to increase quality workouts.
Goals:
300 hours of training
45 times on a map
Attend 2 A-meets
Have no local O-meet per k time of 10:30 or higher
Either 50 Mile Superior Trail Run or Twin Cities Marathon
1 triathlon off-road hopefully
Train for ultra ski event--either Canadian Ski Marathon or Arrowhead 135.
C • Nice goals 2

Monday Jan 29

Note
(rest day)
Mondays will probably be rest days for a while. Last night finished running hotwater to the sink in the bathroom. First major project of the "Year of Projects" finally completed. Which gets me to my goals.

Sunday Jan 28

Skate Skiing 40:00 [3]11 km (3:38 / km)
Wanted to ski a little so I checked out the Loppet trail just before dusk. Started from Wirth beach. Some of the trail was okay, a lot was icy, and there were a number of dirt patches.
Not willing to mark injured yet, but I have a tendonitis type pain in my left shoulder that I am a little worried about.
C • bursitis?.....thats what I hav... 5

Saturday Jan 27

Note
Pre-Loppet 15 k
Skate Skiing 1:40:00 [3]30 km (3:20 / km)
Decided not to do the Pre-loppet after i missed the on-line registration cut-off. I ended up at Carver and had a fun ski. Much of the trail is in great shape. Some is in very bad shape, and other parts felt like a wind tunnel. Not a really hard effort, but skied hard a few different times.

Friday Jan 26

Note
weight:174lbs
Running 33:19 [3]4.5 mi (7:24 / mi)
Franklin/Lake loop. Just wanted to get out for a little run before I race tomorrow. I ended up having one of my faster times (I think). Felt great.

Thursday Jan 25

Note
I--along with a good friend who did the hard work--beat the water heater this morning at 2 AM. Celebrated with a hot shower this morning before work.
C • In hot water !! 1

Wednesday Jan 24

Note
(rest day)
Back at the plumbing one more time.
Other hills (sledding) 15:00 [1]
Sledding with Jdawg at Town and Country. Counting this as hills, especially the times I pulled a loaded sled. Out for about an hour and a half.

Tuesday Jan 23

Note
Water Heater 2--Jerritt 0. Another night of frustration and cold water.

Monday Jan 22

Note
(rest day)
Played football in the snow with Jasper, then put in a new water heater.

Sunday Jan 21

Skate Skiing 55:00 [3]16 km (3:26 / km)
Skied the Quaking Bog section of the City of Lakes course. It was excellent this morning. Used my rock skis and I would stick with those, but it was very skiable, some challenging uphills and fun down hills. Finally, a place close by with good hills for short ski workouts.

Saturday Jan 20

Other (kicksled/hiking) 25:00 [1]2 km (12:30 / km)
Went out to Carver Park with entire family (minus dog)to get out of the house. Ended up staying for over three hours. Molly and Jasper took their turn on the kicksleds, then I got to go out with Jasper. Then, after a snack and the pleasant surprise of running into Mike and Julia, the family took a hike. Rena enjoyed her first time out in the woods, although all she saw was the inside of Molly's jacket.
It was a great day, and I was only a little sad that I was so close to groomed ski trails and not skiing. The skate lanes looked great and the tracks looked solid if anybody is looking for a place to ski.
Trail Running 56:21 [3]6.5 mi (8:39 / mi)
Ford/Lake loop after the outing to Carver. Able to count this as a trail run, because I mainly stayed off the perfectly plowed bike path. It felt good to be out running.

Friday Jan 19

Note
(rest day)
Planned to get a short run in, but vistors came over and I couldn't make it out.

Thursday Jan 18

Skate Skiing 30:00 [2]5 km (6:00 / km)
Made it out for a post bedtime ski. Just wanted to get outside. I skied at Hiawatha golf course and the conditions weren't too bad for rock skis. I lost the trail many times due to drifting. I had planned to ski an hour, but couldn't ski hard enough to warm up and hadn't dressed right for the wind. I packed it in early.

Sunday Jan 14

Running 20:00 [1]1.2 mi (16:39 / mi)
Running with Jasper in the falling snow. Very fun.

Wednesday Jan 10

Note
While not a rest day by any means, I have nothing to log. Molly did all the work and her log will properly reflect it.

At 7:50 PM Rena Kathleen was born. She immediately asked for an Attackpoint log, but I told her she needs to wait.
C • Congratulation! 6

Monday Jan 8

Note
Looking at possible events this year and I saw that there will be no Fat Tire Tri this year. It is cancelled. Molly, what will be your comeback race?
C • No fat tire tri! 2
Note
weight:175lbs (rest day)
Just hanging out at home.

Sunday Jan 7

Orienteering 53:52 [1]*** 2.2 km (24:29 / km)
spiked:6/6c
Hiked ran and carried Jasper some on the short course. This was probably his best/most involved effort yet. Seeing mom near control 4 helped the effort. All would have ended great if not for the fact that ice is slippery. He took a spill and that ended his motivation until we were in sight of the finish.

Before anyone (Ian) tries to stir anything up in the Johnston household...Yes, Molly and the soon-to-be-born baby beat Jasper and me. Here are our excuses (no particular order)
1. I agreed to start before we finished copying the map (Always looking out for others.)
2. Had to stop by the car for snacks after we started.
3. Stop for fruit snack
4. Stop to check out cool ice on the trail.
5. Stop for cheese peel
6. Stop for cool fungus.
7. Frozen ground is hard.
8. Stop for cheese peel
9. Ice is slippery.
10. Molly interfered by yelling "Hey, Jasper I have fruit snacks for you." Not sure what USOF and IOF rules have to say about that.

Luckily, Jasper and I "ran like Jaguars" and had a good finish time.
C • Home office 3
Orienteering 20:00 [3]*** 1.5 km (13:20 / km)
spiked:3/3c shoes: Asics 2110
Control retrieval at Lake Elmo. Just happy I was able to keep my feet dry at teh water crossing. Didn't feel it was necessary to change into my icebugs.

Saturday Jan 6

Orienteering (course setting) 2:00:00 [2]*** 11 km (10:55 / km)
spiked:24/24c shoes: Icebugs
Setting controls and checking the ones Stephen and Kari hung at Lake Elmo. Nice day. About 1 hour of hanging and 1 hour of running. Got my feet wet in two different spots.

Thursday Jan 4

Orienteering (vetting) 1:10:00 [2]*** 5 km (14:00 / km)
spiked:7/7c shoes: Icebugs
Checking a last few controls with Stephen out at Lake Elmo. Fun to run and talk orienteering, global warming, olympic trivia, and training.
Saw 3-4 deer at one point.
C • answer to olympic trivia... 2

Wednesday Jan 3

Note
(rest day)
Played Troll with Jdawg at the park. Involved intervals, jumping off the equipment, and getting pushed into the snow. Pretty good snowball fight on the way home as well.

Tuesday Jan 2

Skate Skiing 1:52:00 [3]32.5 km (3:27 / km)
I can't believe I went back to Elm Creek. We possibly had the one day to ski somewhere else and I blew it. Pretty good night, but the distance from the last week caught up with me. Had to back way down on one lap to recover enough to finish the ski with Dave.

Monday Jan 1

Note
(rest day)
Nothing loggable, but what a day. Skied a few minutes with Jasper, then he saw his friends were sledding and he wanted to join them. Played in the snow for an hour and then headed home.
Quick. Get some skiing in before it melts.
