Note
MNOC--Battle Creek
Orienteering (course setting) 1:40:00 [2]*** 7 km (14:17 / km)
spiked:17/18c shoes: Vasque Spur
Lebanon Hills, hanging tape. Good to be out. I think there will be some interesting legs. Started to get cold, looked at my watch and realized I needed to be on my way to the car anyway. Good timing
Orienteering race 1:11:00 [4]*** 7.99 km (8:53 / km) +130m 8:13 / km
spiked:12/15c shoes: Vasque Spur
Ok run. I think knowing a park fairly well can be a benefit or a curse. I was sloppy today. Maybe trying to run from memory instead of reading the map. A couple of sloppy legs, but only legs 8 and 9 really bother me.
I still want to go back and look at the hill that 8 is on. I think there are more re-entrants than are mapped. I was being cautious, following the hill and could not locate the control. I re-attacked by going to the top and lining up on the fence and clearing. My mistake on number 9 was just being lazy. Trying to run by memory instead of reading the features. Glad to get home and get a cup of coffee.

Friday Mar 30

Other (Basketball) 35:00 [2]
Covering gym class for another teacher. I am really bad at basketball.
Trail Running 43:00 [3]5.0 mi (8:36 / mi)
shoes: Vasque Spur
Out and back along the Winchell trail. Had to slow down in a few spots that I went exploring. Needed to do something more than basketball.

Tuesday Mar 27

Running (with Chariot) 28:00 [3]3.5 mi (7:59 / mi)
Ran to get Jasper from school. Picked up the pace on the way back when it started thundering and raining. Jasper stayed dry. I got soaked.

Sunday Mar 25

Note
Badger O--2 Day
Orienteering race 1:20:00 [4]**** 6.3 km (12:42 / km) +260m 10:32 / km
spiked:4/11c
Bad day. Blew #1 and went downhill. I had mistakes on nearly every control. Should have stopped, gotten a grip then continued. If anything can be positive, I didn't make any HUGE mistakes and I relocated fairly well.

Note
MNOC--Hyland Skill Clinic
Orienteering (hanging controls) 1:10:00 [2]*** 5 km (14:00 / km)
spiked:12/14c shoes: Vasques
Hanging controls for Hyland Clinic. I only had 12 controls to hang, but I forgot the stakes at a control and had to go back two to find them. I would write more, but Jasper is driving me insane asking when I am going to be done.
Trail Running warm up/down 10:00 [3]
before sprint
Orienteering race 12:57 [5]*** 2.42 km (5:21 / km) +50m 4:51 / km
spiked:13/15c shoes: Vasque Spur
Hyland sprint. Good run. Only two small mistakes totaling about 15-20 seconds. Number 8 I was being overly cautious to avoid a big mistake. I stopped to look closely at the map, but I really didn't need to. I also took a few extra seconds to go around the platform at 15. Got suckered a little by 102 (I think) whick was hanging a few meters away.

Friday Mar 23

Mtn Biking (commute some with Chariot) 1:00:00 [2]20 km (3:00 / km)
Rode to work and planned to ride straight to rowing, but when I checked in Jasper had worn out his welcome a bit, so I went home, put him in the trailer and took him to practice with me. Fun day to be on a bike. Mean coach that I am I had the rowers erging inside for one more day.
Rowing intervals 5:00 [5]1.5 km (3:20 / km)
Had the rowers doing a 1 minute on 1 minute off with a partner. Someone showed up late, so I ended up on a team. The rowers didn't pay up on the bet when we won with most total meters rowed. Hope my back doesn't hate me for that one.

Thursday Mar 22

Running 36:03 [3]4.5 mi (8:01 / mi)
Snuck in a run between work and coaching. Started at Macalester and ran up Summit towards the capitol. It was one of those days that really felt like work. I believe I felt less tired on this stretch during the marathon than I did today.

Wednesday Mar 21

Running 34:44 [3]4.5 mi (7:43 / mi)
Franklin/Lake loop at 9:00. Had to wait to see who was elimiinated from the Next Pussycat Doll competition. It is always a little sketchy running after dinner, especially when it includes a fine brownie (or 3) for desert.
C • brownies ! 1

Tuesday Mar 20

Note
(rest day)
unplanned. I had hoped to get a run in before rowing practice, but left work too late.

Monday Mar 19

Note
(rest day)
First day of Macalesster Crew practice. Next few weeks will be kind of hectic.

Sunday Mar 18

Road Biking 1:06:00 [3]17.0 mi (3:53 / mi)
Very windy. Just an easy ride along West River Rd and East River Rd. About 6 mph difference with the wind v. against.

Saturday Mar 17

Orienteering 1:57:00 [3]*** 10 km (11:42 / km)
spiked:14/16c shoes: Vasques
Plotted some possible legs for the Lebanon Hills meet and went to check out the features. Two thoughts: (1) What great terrain. (2)Holy tree cutting and trail Batman.
I was rusty--good to be on a map again--but the trail changes there make no sense to me. They have also been doing a lot of tree harvesting. Most of that in the prairie areas. I am guessing to restore prairie habitat.
There are a number of trails that are not on the map. I am not sure that all of the changes can be made by April. One of the problems is that the closed trails are just marked by little brown signs asking people to stay off. They were generally the ones that were more direct as well. I sure can get how people got turned around at night with all those trails.
It was an abolute blast to be out and by the end I was reading the map fairly well. Hopefully that will continue next weekend--Sprint and Badger. O season is here. Yee ha!

Friday Mar 16

Running (with Jasper) 30:00 [2]3.0 mi (10:00 / mi)
shoes: Vasque Spur
Did a shakedown run with Jasper riding his bike--without training wheels. It went really well. I ran slower than I normally would, but I probably wouldn't have gotten a workout in if we didn't try this. I am looking forward to doing this more often. He needs a new bike.
C • We have the perfect bike 5
Note
I just took a look at my 2006 ski season. In the same time period last year I had 760 k of skiing (compared to about 500 this year), and if I included roller skiing then it was 820 k. Very significant difference. I also did not ski once this year at race pace (not even close at City of Lakes Loppet). Last year I raced numerous times, and had quite a few decent hard workouts.

Thursday Mar 15

Other (Ice Skating) 52:00 [2]12 km (4:20 / km)
Skating with students. Would have kept going, but the pizza showed up. Distance is TOTAL guess.

Wednesday Mar 14

Note
(rest day)
Molly got to go run, and I got to watch an hour of Bob The Builder.
After reading the thread about using attackpoint I took a quick look at my ski season. I actually got in nearly 500 k. If I include rollersking I am well over that. Not bad. I'll have to take a look at last year to compare.

Tuesday Mar 13

Running 57:00 [3]7.5 mi (7:35 / mi)
Ran to pick Jasper up from school with the Chariot. Then ran to Minnehaha Park to meet Molly and Rena to check out the waterfall and the creek. Hiked around some in the slushy snow. then loaded Jasper and the Chariot into the van and ran home from the park. Could have counted this as two separate runs, but effort wasn't different enough to justify it.

Had to run home holding my shorts up because the elastic finally gave out and they were falling down the entire way. Only wore those so I wouldn't embarass Jasper by showing up in my running shorts.

Sunday Mar 11

Mtn Biking 1:44:00 [3]39 km (2:40 / km)
Met up with Justin and Molly on the mid-town greenway. Followed it out to Hopkins, around back to their condo, then back home. Very good first ride of the year. The greenway had a lot of standing water which equaled some very cold toes by the end of the ride.
C • Quite the change 1

Saturday Mar 10

Classic Skiing 40:00 [1]4.5 km (8:53 / km)
Took my turn skiing with Jasper. I had Rena in the Bjorn. It was a great day. Finally had Jasper ski with actual ski boots and waxless skis. It made him a very happy skier.
Classic Skiing 1:15:00 [4]18 km (4:10 / km)
Skied at Baker with dave while Molly hung out with the kids. It had warmed up significantly while we were there and kick varied greatly. the tracks were still fully covered and will probably make it another couple days. Tough skiing.

Thursday Mar 8

Hiking (snowshoe) 45:00 [1]1.5 mi (29:59 / mi)
Took one of my classes snowshoing at Hyland. It was a lot of fun. They actually enjoyed it. The hiking and getting to pelt their teacher with snowballs.

Wednesday Mar 7

Running 40:00 [4]5.8 mi (6:53 / mi)
Ford/Lake loop. Feeling like I hadn't done any high intensity work for a long time. I started out easier and built up. By the end I was running pretty hard. It felt good. I also was able to drop someone who was running behind me for a good chunk of the way.
Running warm up/down 10:00 [2]0.8 mi (12:29 / mi)
shoes: Vasques

Tuesday Mar 6

Note
(rest day)
Planned to get home from work early. I didn't. Then I had to repair our garage door. I sometimes wish I had more of an engineer type brain for things like that. I had hoped to ski or run, but just kind of ran out of time and energy.

planned rest day

Sunday Mar 4

Skate Skiing 48:00 [2]16 km (3:00 / km)
Out at Hyland for Jasper's Birthday party. Molly and I took turns hanging out at the sledding hill while the other one skied. What a perfect day. I probably could have skied in shorts.

Saturday Mar 3

Hiking (snowshoe) 1:45:00 [2]5 km (21:00 / km) +150m 18:16 / km
Met MNOC folks at Afton. Molly and I had Jasper and Rena and enough gear to stay a week. It was a blast hiking out to the campsite and hanging out. I got a little nervous on the way back because Jasper kept saying his feet were getting cold. Climb up to the parking lot was tough. Got back to the car, pulled Jasper's boots off and his feet were warm. What a fun day. Thanks to all of you who helped out so we could participate.

Friday Mar 2

Hiking 45:00 [1]2.0 mi (22:30 / mi)
Hike down to the boathouse with the family. Pulled Jasper in the sled.
Trail Running 58:00 [3]7.0 mi (8:17 / mi)
shoes: Icebugs
ford /lake loop
