Thursday May 31 | ||
| Note | ||
| (rest day) | ||
| Had planned to get over and run a couple of the sprints from last year at Como after school and before an evening event back at school, but it didn't happen. | ||
Wednesday May 30 | ||
| Road Biking (commute) 40:00 [2] 9.0 mi (4:27 / mi) | ||
| Jasper to school on the tagalong. Then swaapped bikes and went to school. | ||
Monday May 28 | ||
| Road Biking 2:20:00 [3] 40.0 mi (3:29 / mi) | ||
| Molly and I rode down to a friend's house in Burnsville, then I went out for another loop with a few other guys. Great to be on th ebike for a longer ride. | ||
Sunday May 27 | ||
| Hiking 1:40:00 [1] 4.0 mi (24:59 / mi) | ||
| Hiked at Minnesota Valley State Park near Jordan. We had gone down to meet a friend, and planned to take a little walk before the firewood salessperson showed up. Didn't take any water or snacks for the little hiker. Molly ended up carrying hime the last 1.5 miles or so. Great park and the highlight of the hike was Jasper falling into a mudhole after it was suggested that he go around. | ||
Saturday May 26 | ||
| Running 1:12:00 [2] 9.0 mi (7:59 / mi) | ||
| Long run in the late afternoon. Very nice. North to the pedestrian bridge at the U. Porta Potty gods were smiling and found a construction site just in time. | ||
Friday May 25 | ||
| Road Biking (commute) 25:00 [2] 6.0 mi (4:09 / mi) | ||
| May take long way home. | ||
| C • mt bike map holder 2 | ||
| Other (basketball and capture th) 30:00 [3] | ||
| Still bad at basketball. Still pretty good at Capture the Flag. | ||
Wednesday May 23 | ||
| Road Biking 40:00 [2] 9.0 mi (4:27 / mi) | ||
| Took Jasper to school by mtn. bike and the tagalong, then went by the house and switched to my road bike. Transition was pretty smooth, except the garage remote got stuck in my pocket on the way out. Time lost: 10 seconds. :) | ||
| Other (Basketball) 30:00 [3] | ||
| I'm still horrible. | ||
Tuesday May 22 | ||
| Running 57:00 [2] 7.0 mi (8:09 / mi) | ||
| Ford/Lake loop. Felt bad nearly the entire way. Quads felt like they were going to cramp at any moment. Felt like a lot of work | ||
Monday May 21 | ||
| Mtn Biking (with tagalong) 27:00 [3] 10 km (2:42 / km) | ||
| A quick ride with Jasper to Minnehaha Park. Had to make a hasty return when he got a bunch of sand in the eye. My legs were surprisingly tired. | ||
| C • I get more sore the 2nd day af... 5 | ||
Sunday May 20 | ||
| Running (commute) 23:00 [2] 2.5 mi (9:12 / mi) | ||
| (rest day) shoes: Asics 2110 | ||
| We decided to go to the park before dinner. Jsper picked Brackett and wanted to ride his bike. He and Molly rode while I put Rena in the jogger. We took the long way home along the Greenway and then up River Road. | ||
Saturday May 19 | ||
| Event: MNOC - Theodore Wirth Park | ||
| Orienteering 1:02:18 [3] *** 6.3 km (9:53 / km) | ||
| spiked:18/21c shoes: Vasque Spur | ||
| Wirth Park. Good course. Sometimes crossable marshes aren't. Only a few minor mistakes. One was a 180 degree error leaving a control that probably cost me 30 seconds. Have to look at map later to fill in details.
Cum splits: 1.39, 3.10, 5.56, 10.44, 14.14, 18.09, 20.58, 55.41, 26.00, 27.24, 31.50, 33.07, 35.24, 38.42, 41.52, 47.26, 48.58, 53.30, 55.52, 57.41, 1.00.21, 1.00.57, 1.02.18

| Orienteering race 12:28 [4] *** 1.94 km (6:26 / km) | ||
| spiked:11/12c shoes: Vasque Spur | ||
| Fun sprint. Very tired from Red. Only bobble was the control on top of the hill, just in the woods from the larger clearing. Couldn't quite catch Julia on the sprint in. | ||
| C • Did you notice the splits? 2 | ||

| Road Biking 19:00 [4] 5.5 mi (3:27 / mi) | ||
| Running late from the meeting to get home to help with bedtime. | ||
Wednesday May 16 | ||
| Note | ||
| (rest day) | ||
| I thought MNOC Board Meetings would only get in the way of my workouts if I joined. That is not the case. Can't you all start your meetings at 10:00 PM so I can get a run in?
BTW, are the MNOC shirts being ordered from Axis Gear? I want one. Had a nice dinner with Jasper and Rena at Coffee News on Grand after running some errands.

| Road Biking 1:00:00 [4] 20.0 mi (3:00 / mi) +300m 1:47 / km | ||
| After deciding not to run, I ran into my Friend Dave who asked if I wanted to go for a ride. I haven't really been on my road bike all season and he is in the middle of his race season. You guess what the hour felt like. Even though the avg was only 20, that was solely because of stop lights and Ohio St. and Ramsey Hill. Most times I looked at my computer we were between 23-25 mph.
As we went past Minnehaha Park I saw a bike with a tow system on a truck and thought "must be the Gnome Hunters." I was right. Very fun ride.
| C • Must have been Dave 4 | ||
Monday May 14 | ||
| Road Biking (commute) 25:00 [2] 6.0 mi (4:09 / mi) | ||
Sunday May 13 | ||
| Mtn Biking (with tagalong) 30:00 [3] 8.7 km (3:27 / km) +30m 3:23 / km | ||
| Took Jasper for our first real ride today. Went to Lock and Dam 1 and walked around. He pedaled most of the way. It was a blast. We could definitely go further in the future. | ||
Saturday May 12 | ||
| Note | ||
| MNOC--Afton State Park
After seeing how thick Afton was, I can't say I am that excited about fighting through all the buckthorn at Wirth.
| Orienteering 1:15:00 [3] *** 6 km (12:30 / km) | ||
| spiked:7/8c shoes: Vasque Spur | ||
| Started the Red course late after helping with registration. Molly got priority as part of her Mother's Day gift. I knew I probably wouldn't have time to finish a course. I probably should have done brown or green, but I didn't even think of it. At 3:15 I still had 7 controls to go, so I just headed back to the finish. Sprinted the last few yards to make Ian think I beat him.
I had trouble with one control in really thick veg. Not sure that was the problem, but it was there. I went all the way back out to the trail to re-attack which added more thick veg and more time. Looking at this as a training day, not worried about the result at all.
Thursday May 10 | ||
| Mtn Biking (with tagalong) 20:00 [2] 3.0 mi (6:40 / mi) | ||
| (rest day) | ||
| To Hiawatha Park and back after playing and climbing up and down the "ice auger" (Gotta love MN). We went a different way back and Jasper started crying when we turned the corner and he realized we were home. He definitely wanted to ride more. | ||
Wednesday May 9 | ||
| Running 40:00 [2] 5.0 mi (7:59 / mi) | ||
| shoes: Asics 2110 | ||
| Out and back on West River Rd to bottom of hill by Franklin. Nice running along Winchell trail with the leaves out. It is amazing how much noise from the road they block. | ||
| Mtn Biking (with tag along) 20:00 [2] 3.0 mi (6:40 / mi) | ||
| Picked up Jasper from school. | ||
Tuesday May 8 | ||
| Mtn Biking (with tag along) 25:00 [1] 4.0 mi (6:14 / mi) | ||
| Took Jasper on his first longer ride on the tag along. He needed a belt so we rode to Target. Fun. He was super excited, but we were both pretty nervous about traffic. It's one thing to ride in traffic and be responsible for yourself, but another thing entirely to have a 4 year-old along and pedaling. | ||
Monday May 7 | ||
| Note | ||
| weight:177lbs (rest day) | ||
| Made the crazy drive all the way from Detroit yesterday after the race. Only possible because Rena and Jasper both slept a good chunk of the afternoon. Still didn't get home until 1:00 and then both of the kids needed some attention to get settled. I think I'll take today off. | ||
Sunday May 6 | ||
| Orienteering race 2:45:45 [3] **** 12.89 km (12:52 / km) +357m 11:18 / km | ||
| 25c shoes: Vasque Spur | ||
| I am extremely happy with this run. I was slow, and made some mistakes, but not huge mistakes and I was always in contact with the map. I don't have the map or my splits in front of me, so a more detailed look later.
The terrain was very similar to Telemark, so the work setting there last fall definitely helped. After the long i decided not to sell my compass and take up basketmaking.
Day 3: Blue - Splits | ||
Saturday May 5 | ||
| Orienteering race 1:48:25 [3] **** 5.5 km (19:43 / km) +240m 16:11 / km | ||
| spiked:9/16c shoes: Vasque Spur | ||
| A few good legs. A few smaller mistakes. One big mistake. And one HUGE mistake on leg 14 (20 minutes or more) when I was completely not in touch with the map. Considered heading back in to DNF. I am happy that for the most part that I slowed down and read the features. One of the legs I made a big mistake on I walked it and still drifted off line. I will look at tomorrow as experience. | ||
Day 2: Blue/Green - Splits
Friday May 4 | ||
| Event: US Team Trials | ||
| Orienteering race 22:05 [5] *** 2.8 km (7:53 / km) +65m 7:04 / km | ||
| spiked:12/13c weight:177lbs shoes: Vasque Spur | ||
| I had a really good run going until #10. Took a different route than the people I was with, which I think was pretty good, then began to second guess myself. Thought I had overrun the control, and lost confidence. Looking at the splits, this was a 5 minute mistake. Regrouped, got to the control and then finished the last 3 with no errors. I will again take the positives from this one and look toward tomorrow. | ||
Sprint TT (Red/Blue) - Splits
Thursday May 3 | ||
| Note | ||
| Finished the LONG drive to Detroit. Rena is not a fan of her carseat. If she was awake, she was crying.
I am feeling sick. Scootered around the block multiple times while Jasper tried out his new bike. Looking forward to this weekend's courses. Not looking forward to the drive home.
Wednesday May 2 | ||
| Rowing 55:00 [3] 7 km (7:51 / km) | ||
| Last day of Macalester practice, and they were short a body. One of the rowers wwanted to cox so I jumped in. Felt fun to be on the water on a perfect morning. Now life can get back close to "normal." | ||
Tuesday May 1 | ||
| Orienteering 52:00 [3] *** 4.5 km (11:33 / km) +40m 11:04 / km | ||
| spiked:9/10c | ||
| Control picking at Lebanon Hills. I would have liked to have been on a map a lot more this spring, but it just wasn't in the cards. Had fun today. I scared up a red fox, followed a flock of turkeys for awhile and saw a snowy egret.
Oh yeah, I did okay staying with the map.
