Thursday Aug 30

Mtn Biking (road with trailer) 50:00 [2]8.5 mi (5:52 / mi)
Loaded up the tagaalong and Molly took the Chariot, then we headed to the fair. Operation Mitigate Caaloric Intake was underway. Ride there was a little stressful because of rush hour and fair traffic.

Performance at the fair was not great: I only ate half an order of cheese curds, 1.2 ears of corn and 1/2 a Summit. Not nearly as much as I had hoped for.

Bike home was very nice. At dusk, not a lot of traffic and the kids went right to bed when we got there.

Tuesday Aug 28

Orienteering 1:00:00 [3]*** 5 km (12:00 / km)
spiked:25/25c shoes: Vasque Spur
Course setting and retrieval at Como. Split hanging the controls with Darryn. Got to collect all the controls aand sneak my workout in that way
C • Como Sprints 5

Monday Aug 27

Note
Made it through one of the more stressful weeks in recent history. Accomplished every thing that needed to be done and still got to get outside a number of times. Not bad. Hope to get more consistent with workouts, but I am not sure that is in the cards just yet. Rowing season starts in 2 weeks.

Other than the sprint at Como tomorrow, the highlight will be our annual graze at the State Fair. First stop Sweet Corn, then probably to the dairy barn, then across the street to the cheese curds. Yeeha!!
Trail Running 43:00 [3]4.5 mi (9:32 / mi) +100m 5:33 / km
shoes: Vasque Spur
Franklin/Lake loop on trails and down along river. One of those runs that felt tough the entire way.

Sunday Aug 26

Mtn Biking 1:20:00 [2]8.0 mi (10:00 / mi)
Acting as support crew for team "Two Walkies and a Talkie" on the Breast Cancer 3-day. jasper again on his own bike with a very impressive effort. Toughest part of the day was getting Jasper back on his bike with a full chocolate shake for him in my water bottle cage. The middle crew member nearly mutineed. Other challeges--outdoor diaper change with a daughter who loves to grab handfuls of grass, and trying to answer the question, "Dad, what are the bras all over the van for?" Good question, son.

Friday Aug 24

Mtn Biking 45:00 [1]4.5 mi (10:00 / mi)
In what would be a training ride for Sunday, jasper and Rena and i did the Franklin/Lake loop. Jasper on his bike and Rena in the Chariot. Very fun.

Wednesday Aug 22

Running one of the courses from memory.

Tuesday Aug 21

Orienteering (course setting) 53:00 [2]*** 2.5 km (21:12 / km)
spiked:10/10c shoes: Vasque Spur
Working at Como. A lot of blowdown.

Sunday Aug 19

Mtn Biking (Road) 40:00 [1]4.0 mi (10:00 / mi)
(rest day)
A quick ride before dinner with Jasper. Legs feel pretty good after yesterday's effort, but I need to figure out what is going on with my hamstrings. They have been really tight during every workout for the last month or so, and often are near cramping. Had to cut this ride a little short to get back to America's funniest Home Videos.

Saturday Aug 18

Event: MNOC Rogaine

Note
MNOC--ROGAINE
Orienteering (Rogaine) 5:50:00 [3]*** 20 km (17:30 / km)
spiked:12/18c shoes: Vasque Spur
Rogaine on a beautiful course set by Mike and Julia. Had a lot of problems in the first 1.5 hours, including choice of control order. After that it slowly got better and the last 4 hours I was navigating really well. My teammate was a great sport, even when I was struggling with navigation. Not so happy with the result, but extremely happy with the last 2/3 of the race.

Friday Aug 17

Hiking 30:00 [2]1.5 mi (20:00 / mi)
shoes: Vasque Spur
Hiking at Fish Hatchery with Molly, Jasper and Rena aftter a long nap in the van for 3/4 of the Johnston camping troop. As with other hikes during the week, I carried Jasper for the entire distance.
Note
Went swwimming in the Amnicon River at Amnicon Falls State Park. Swam under a waterfall for the first time ever. Very cool. Any reports by Jasper that he "went over a waterfall" are exaggerated. We slid down some rocks with water and moss in them into a large pool of water.

Thursday Aug 16

Hiking 25:00 [1]0.5 km (50:00 / km)
shoes: Vasque Spur
Went rivereering on the Black River at Pattison State Park with Jasper while Molly and Rena walked along the shore. We worked our way up about stepping from rock to rock. It was an absolute blast. Loggable not so much for strenuous effort, but I have to believe the balance work had some core value.

Wednesday Aug 15

Hiking 2:00:00 [2]4.0 mi (30:00 / mi)
Hiking at Pattison State Park near Superior. Followed the trail to the Little Falls. Had lunch and hiked back. Very worthwhile and it would be a fun trail to run. Never got the chance while we were there. Apparantly camping really isn't that relaxing when you go with two kids under 5. This gets a 2 intensity because Jasper decided he wanted to be carried nearly the whole way--except when he wanted to run--a theme that carried the entire week.

Sunday Aug 12

Orienteering 2:21:00 [2]*** 10 km (14:06 / km) +300m 12:16 / km
spiked:9/11c shoes: Vasque Spur
1:24k USGS of Afton and a shakedown with Roagaine partner. Very cool. Marked 12 controls on the map, but plan changed immediately when we got to the park before the gates opened. Started right from the park office. North end including both sides of the ridgeline. One bigger mistake, and a couple small bobbles. Feel pretty good about the day. Ready to go for next weekend.

Saturday Aug 11

Running 50:00 [2]6.5 mi (7:41 / mi)
shoes: Vasque Spur
Not sure I was going to get a workout in today. Then we decided to go to Highland Park pool in St. Paul. I got an early start and ran. Got honked at by some random woman in a white mini-van somwhere on Ford Parkway. Very nice to be swimming at the end of this run at 1:00 pm. A great time at the pool. Jasper was having a blast jumping in and Rena liked the water spots and crawling in the shallow area.
Distance is estimate.
Tomorrow Rogaine practice at a secret location.
C • Secret Training 5

Friday Aug 10

Note
3rd Annual Amazing Race with students. A lot of fun. I got to drive around and see them at the various locations on the course I set. Molly, Jasper and Rena helped out at Minnehaha Park with a 3-legged race and popcicles.

Thursday Aug 9

Road Biking 50:00 [1]5.0 mi (10:00 / mi)
With Jasper. The usual loop. River Road Greenway to Hiawatha and back home. He decided that it was a good day to wear his Incredibles costume from last Halloween. It was hard to argue. He semmed faster in it.
Road Biking 1:25:00 [3]25.0 mi (3:24 / mi)
Met up with a couple freinds and rode the Greenway out to Hopkins and back. A couple of fun sprints and some paceline work. Good to be on the bike.

Wednesday Aug 8

Trail Running 30:09 [4]4.0 mi (7:32 / mi)
shoes: Vasque Spur
Very fun Tartan Terrible. Solid first lap. A little slower second. Hot and humid. Only 9 seconds off my predicted time.

Sunday Aug 5

Road Biking 45:00 [4]15.0 mi (3:00 / mi)
Rode down to a birthday party in Burnsville. Pushed fairly hard.

Saturday Aug 4

Running 55:00 [3]7.0 mi (7:51 / mi)
shoes: Asics 2110
Ford/Lake loop. Would have been a couple minutes faster, but I stopped to watch Marine 1 fly by with Dubya in it. Felt like I was working fairly hard for the first half, got more comfortable as the run went on.
Note
Rogaine Gossip: Ian is teamed up with some woman whose name he refuses to disclose. Rumor has it that she was a member of the ill-fated 1980 Olympic rowing team thwarted by the boycott.

Stephen R and Todd P have teamed up.

I am finally going to go on record with my partner. Dave Peterson, a friend of mine from skiing. He has agreed to wander around lost with me for up to six hours, but no longer.

Friday Aug 3

Road Biking (commute) 25:00 [2]6.0 mi (4:09 / mi)

Thursday Aug 2

Mtn Biking (Road) 2:15:00 [3]30.0 mi (4:30 / mi)
Rode to meet students renting bikes at Calhoun. 2 loops Harriet and 1 Calhoun. Rode over to meet Molly at work, then to Dunn Bros. for iced coffee. Excellent day to be on the bike. Distance is an estimate. My computer is broken.
