Monday Dec 31 | ||
| Hiking 30:00 [1]2 km (15:00 / km) | ||
| Joined the Volksmarch group at Fort Snelling for a candlelit hike. Very fun. I pulled Rena in the Chariot, Jasper walked until he felt like taking a free ride on the sled Molly was pulling. Very fun, though I am sure Mike and Julia's party was okay too. | ||
Sunday Dec 30 | ||
| Skate Skiing 45:00 [1]2.5 km (18:00 / km) | ||
| Skied with Jasper and a couple of his friends and Rena in the Chariot at Baker Park. The best part of the early snow has been getting to a variety of parks and seeing so many recreational skiers out. Doing laps at Elm Creek doesn't seem to attract many of the three pin binding crowd and their kids. | ||
| Skate Skiing 1:03:00 [4]20 km (3:09 / km) | ||
| Had an hour to ski while the kids all went sledding. Skied two complete outer loops and had trouble keeping up with Dave. P. Checked my heartrate at the end of the first loop and it was 175. Second loop was a little better, but I was looking forward to the final hill. | ||
Saturday Dec 29 | ||
| Skate Skiing 2:25:00 [2]35 km (4:09 / km) | ||
| Met some friends at Hyland in Bloomington for a group ski and a little coaching. Skied very easy and stopped a number of times for the first hour. They left and I kept going. Felt great the entire way. | ||
Friday Dec 28 | ||
| Classic Skiing (with Chariot) 55:00 [1]4 km (13:45 / km) | ||
| Lebanon Hills with Molly, Jasper and Rena in the Chariot. Very fun. | ||
| Classic Skiing 35:00 [3]8 km (4:22 / km) | ||
| After the family ski, Molly agreed to hang out with the kids in the Lebanon Hills Visitor Center so I could ski. Pushed pretty hard and had a fun ski. Classic is such a blast. | ||
Thursday Dec 27 | ||
| Classic Skiing 1:30:00 [2]18 km (5:00 / km) | ||
| Afternoon ski at Lebanon Hills with Molly. It was awesome. I was surprised that tracks hadn't been set yet. In a typical first classic ski of the season I totally missed the wax. I think I should have started with red. (26 degrees air temp.) I applied some late and it seemed better, but I am not sure. Need to re-read kick wax info. Molly was on grip tape and that definitely was not the way to go. Had there been tracks I thinks she would have been set.
Distance is total guess. A nice easy ski with a number of stops.

| (rest day) | ||
| Driving back from Green Bay. we had talked about stopping at Nine Mile Forest in Wasau, but I was the only one awake at that point, so there was no way i was slowing down.
When we got home we went for a great walk in the fresh snow.

Tuesday Dec 25 | ||
| Trail Running 30:00 [3]3.0 mi (10:00 / mi) | ||
| shoes: Vasque Blur 2 | ||
| Easy run, but in various snow depths made it slow. I went to light the wood burning stove in my brother-in law's hunting shack for a planned family expidition later. then I continued through the woods and then along a snowmobile trail back to the shack to check on the fire. Then back to the house. | ||
| Classic Skiing 30:00 [1]2 km (15:00 / km) | ||
| Skied with Jasper to the hunting shack towing Rena in the Chariot. Conditions varied from dirt and gravel to 8 inches of windblown snow. On the way back Molly pulled Rena and Jasper and I cut across the cornfield. Maybe the first time I've ever skied in a cornfield. Highlight of the ski was following Jasper up a slight hill and realizing that he left perfect herringbone tracks in the fresh snow. That's my boy.
| ||
| Note | ||
| A very fun afternoon at the huntin' shack. Games of "thicket", a candycane hunt in the woods, and watching a possum flushed by a coon dog actually play possum.
Rena was a trooper and didn't want to be inside. Jasper and his cousins played non-stop for nearly 2 hours out in the snow.
Thursday Dec 20 | ||
| Mtn Biking (commute) 55:00 [2]8.0 mi (6:51 / mi) | ||
| To meet Molly at Al's in Dinkytown for Breakfast. Then to work. Then home. | ||
| C • left you a note on my log... 1 | ||
| Mtn Biking 50:00 [3]10.0 mi (4:59 / mi) | ||
| Decided to take long way home and get a workout in. Down East River Rd, across the Hwy 5 Bridge. I went down the steep hill by Historic Fort Snelling only to find that the trail leading to the dog park was completely snow covered and unridable. I hiked back up the hill and followed the upper trail home. Saw 2 deer along the way. | ||
Wednesday Dec 19 | ||
| Mtn Biking (commute) 1:00:00 [2]9.0 mi (6:40 / mi) | ||
| Had to drop the van off at a shop near Uptown. Took the Greenway to Franklin ave, then to work. Winter biking is an absolute blast. | ||

Tuesday Dec 18 | ||
| Other (Roller skating) 1:10:00 [2]10 km (7:00 / km) | ||
| Work and workout come together on a roller skating field trip. Three massive blisters to show for it. Distance is a complete estimate. Probably way short. | ||
Sunday Dec 16 | ||
| Skate Skiing 2:00:00 [3]35 km (3:26 / km) | ||
| Nothing like moderation in training :) Skied at Battle Creek with my friend Dave. We did four loops of the trail network which the sign says is 8.75 k. We skied each one within about 45 seconds of the others. The uphills were a great workout and the downs were a blast. With the good grooming and the good snow that place is perfect for training. And it's only a 20 minute drive. | ||
Saturday Dec 15 | ||
| Skate Skiing (with Chariot) 1:00:00 [1]3 km (20:00 / km) | ||
| Skied with Jasper and pulled Rena in the Chariot at Hyland. It was a perfect afternoon. Stopped for a snaack in the sun and then finished our loop. Jasper was able to ski up all the hills by himself except one. He was also able to ski down every hill with only a couple falls. I was very proud. | ||
| Skate Skiing 1:00:00 [2]16 km (3:45 / km) | ||
| Switched child duty with Molly and skied with a friend of ours. Another nice, easy ski. North loop, hill loop and lake loop. Distance is estimate. | ||
Friday Dec 14 | ||
| Skate Skiing 55:00 [2]12 km (4:35 / km) | ||
| A quick ski after work at Highland golf course in St. Paul. It was hard packed and my balance was a little off. Just wanted a very easy ski and i got it. For the first time in my skiing history I don't think I broke a sweat. | ||
Thursday Dec 13 | ||
| Note | ||
| Couldn't stand not having anything in my log. I hope to get out today for a ski. Too bad I have missed so many days of the good snow. This weekend looks like there is some time for skiing.
Still waiting for word from the U.P. No news is good news?

Thursday Dec 6 | ||
| Skate Skiing 58:00 [3]16 km (3:38 / km) | ||
| Finally made it out for a ski. Excellent. I skied at the lit loop at Battle Creek. I have never seen it in better condition. As always with the first ski, I was using a lot of energy for not a lot of return. By the third lap i was getting more speed for less work. It was a perfect night. | ||
| C • Icebugs 1 | ||
Monday Dec 3 | ||
| Classic Skiing (with Chariot) 30:00 [1]1.5 km (20:00 / km) | ||
| Early evening ski with Molly, Jasper and Rena. First ski with the family this season meant lots of hassle before hand. It was worth it. Very nice night out, capped by Chipotle. | ||
Sunday Dec 2 | ||
| Orienteering race 2:20:35 [3]*** 16 km (8:47 / km) +500m 7:36 / km | ||
| spiked:29/32c shoes: Icebugs MR3 | ||
| Possum Trot. Very happy with my result. I navigated much more than I did last year and still had a very positive result. My errors were in route choice, not in locating controls. I had no more than 3-4 minutes in total mistakes, but made bad route decisions on 3 controls that cost significant time.
I ran with Ian for about 9 controls in the middle of the course. He still had 2 skips left, so he took off at at 27. I skipped 15 and 33.

| Pre-Possum at Woodridge in Lawrence, KS. A fast course with a lot of open land with tall grass. Only one mistake. I left the trail too soon going to control 5 and was looking around the wrong re-entrant. | ||
