Theseus and the Minotaur Rogaine

Decided to try something longer alone and see if I could knock out a few wrinkles. A mixed success. Beautiful terrain and course, and a fun concept with 8 minotaur/daughter controls. A very comfortable day, with just enough breeze that it was bugless without DEET. Lots of parallel features but navigating on a 1:15k map really helped, relative to a topo scale and contour quality.

One nice feature was the lack of trails and the faintness of the ones that existed. Could have started better, picking a slightly better entry point but bounced over the dividing ridge into the sharp notch. Made reasonable but steep choices for getting past the cliff band several times. Apparently, I veged and made an unforced error in locating and/or punching a daughter but otherwise cleared the south. It was not easy going (but better than expected), in the lightish green forest and warm enough that I apparently did a crappy job of hydrating. Didn't pick up water at the south end, because I still was carrying enough but that was a huge mistake that for the next 7 control had me semi-lucidly navigating. Some of this was really gratifying, getting to a control that I was sure I had toshed but basically stopping in or next to the circle and getting the job done without roaming. But the 7th, 71 was just not good. Not thinking, not stopping, daf. Escaped to the road and reattacked. I drank a gatorade, either before reattacking or more likely after, I don't really remember. Bad approach to 76 trying to cross the beaver meadow and getting water/cliffed out and needing to backpeddle to the northern beaver dam to cross. 85 and the daughter were fine, and I had another gatorade, so I kept pushing on. The next was a mess, getting a bit too far E to cleanly find the control, but worked it out. Crossed some bit of marsh, then headed east but it wasn't the main marsh, so I ended up confused on a peninsula, before venturing across another wide marsh to get back on track. Wedged in one more control, and the daughter on the way back and then just made sure I finished in time, covered in yellow pollen. My eyes don't want to go with me again.

Navigating: not great but improving; the pandemic has not helped with this.
Food: pretty good, I think I was calorically fine and hit every hour but maybe one.
Water: this I must fix.

Otherwise, saw an awesome lady slipper, irises, a porcupine from probably too close, and spent several minutes chasing a turkey.
