Orienteering race 6:00:00 [3] *** 24.0 km (15:00 / km)
16c shoes: Salomon Speedcross

The distance was measured by string as we carried no Garmin; with the amount of downfall, it is probably a fair estimate. Aidan finished his first rogaine, 6 h, with me! He was a good sport and a good judge of the size of his gas tank. We finished 16 of 30 controls (660 pts) in 6 h and zero minutes with a run out through blowdown and up the middle of the creek to an extended sprinting finish. (Watch out, A Large Orange Hedge expects to be running through the greenbrier at a meet in the future!) The weather was fantastic, our loop visited the less bruising eastern and northern parts of the course and even involved a bit more navigating and a bit less road beating in the later parts. Only one major error (stopping 20 ft short of control 30, which was one of the less visible controls and then detouring 350 m S and then coming right back N to the control; oh, just a few more steps, and one more minor error navigationally.

Frank Baukert set the course which had many nice vistas from the knobs to the north and Berry Run.

Came home to help finish the cleanup; 2" of the White River visited our basement. This was the first time that we have taken on water since arriving in Indy in 2005. We are really glad that we powered the boxes out of the basement for 4 h last night!

Road running 24:01 [3] 3.08 mi (7:48 / mi) +18m 7:39 / mi
shoes: Inov 340 Pair #1

Rained for the entire run. But it was a spring warm rain; the drops and the air were about the same temperature (60 F) which was pleasant enough that it was hard to stop running.

Control clearing/setup 20:00 [3]

Pulled a few controls from Ransberg. Very peaceful.

My sincere thanks to Mike, Pat, Matthew and Dave for helping me with the steep learning curve over the past few months.

Orienteering race 45:23 [4] *** 5.05 km (8:59 / km) +169m 7:42 / km
17c shoes: Inov 340 Pair #1

A fun blend of problems from flyingsquirrel and benjaminhart. Open and faster at the beginning, really steep in the middle (in other terms, getting out of a couple of re-entrants was third-class climbing while running), and then a straightforward ending (thank goodness for this because I was sucking wind on the hill to the go control). Navigationally, my day was better than typical with only one full-on error (crossing too low over the spur to the re-entrant before 8?), but there was a bit too much veering off line and tentativeness near the controls. It was a good race, great weather, and a truly spectacular ride through the pine trees to the finish (both as a spectator and competitor).

Block vetting and final half dozen controls for the long. Thanks to the help of Jerry, Jim, Brenda, and Aidan, we visited every control by 12 minutes to the start of the race and the one faulty SI unit replaced in time.

I had no real idea of what to expect having spent shockingly little time at IUB over the past 8 yrs in Indiana. Much more layered with small uncrossable walls and gardens required some concentration to not miss the fair passages. Even though I tried to reload with food, hydration and a shower after placing controls with Pat for the Saturday long, my legs were empty at the start, so the speed was not what I would have liked. Made two significant errors during my oxygen-starved phase (one 90 degree error and a second lack-of-trust-error fumbling about at the entrance an alcove). Chalk one up for Mike; very nicely done map!

Blustery day for 44 degrees. Today was just a quick loop to NorthCentral and home. Tomorrow, the temperature will start its ascent to 65 on sunny Saturday (knock on wood).
