The day was nice but damp and I had an on-and-off run. Slow on the first few controls probably losing 50s and 20s unnecessarily on contrils 1 and 3. Control 9 took what should have been a good route tending W of the line over the end of the spur. I learned that on some maps white and green are actually the same color. Honeysuckle and fallen trees to 2' in diameter made this slow going (>1 min 30s lost?). My big mistake was a directional problem in some open forest exiting the grove W rather than S right at control 12. The added loop ate 4 min and 12.5 m of climb.

Mostly decent running and simple navigation as the second run for the day. One ridiculously big error on control 4: on compass through green and got to the trail but went N instead of south. The choice seems inexplicable except that I had thought that I had mistakenly cut across the linear grove. After getting back on track my irritation unleashed a second abortive attempt for the control before getting it right. Argh!

After a long runless week, the Navigator Cup weekend has let me get out and leave some blood in the woods (literally). Day one was ok but not really a very fulfilling performance. A mixture of nice open woods and newer woods interspersed with evil vines.

Many controls were tentative loosing time at the starts of legs and using too many slow-ups to review the map mid leg. Only 6, 9, 10 and 11 were on-the-money. The largest error was on 4 drifting N of the line and somehow exactly paralleling the main road for 250m of light green (it felt like much more). Started to mess up at 4 by heading NE into the medium green and backed off returning to a much better light green pass through to the trail. It used a minute but the cost of the dark green would have been much larger. The most startling moment was moving off of control 5 at the top of a gully. Turned to go into the gully and the quick motion downhill was met by a vine that might as well have been wire. Tore my numbers half off and put a good size rip in my shirt; if I had not spun I might have been left hanging as decoration for the next runner. It was good fun but I wish that I had been able to move a bit faster.

Also ran the junior's training sprint 2.5 km and the confusing-o 1.4 km afterwards for a warmdown. Aidan was less confused and beat me in the later; good on him!

A nice day weather-wise for the annual Eagle Creek Score-O. Enough snow and icy trails cut into the pace but the run went pretty smoothly. No major nav errors; control 29 was one earthbank east, which probably chewed up 3 minutes. 23 of 27 controls was probably equal to last year (didn't even see #14 on my map until we got home). Nice to see the good attendance!
