Needed some happy and this run gave it. Slow and a bit tired but I felt like I could have kept going and going.

Map 2 of ultralong 5.0k/96m.

A generally good run on, as Bill said, a very long sprint. Poor choice getting to 9, followed Aidan up rather than taking the better low route. Aidan's split was much better as he climbs faster and I made about 1 min of hesitation/indecision errors (and realized that I didn't have the correct clue sheet in my holder). Two more 10-15 s errors on the next two legs and then pushed for home. Pete spurred me on, especially for the final three controls, and this made all the difference.

Classic course, Red 6.4k/179m.

A good run except for a huge problem with a leg in the middle. Chose a low route through light green above the reservoir and between two cliff bands rather than an easy climb-y route. Sadly, it was good, adequate, worse, poor, then just c#$p (and I was trapped). Burned 5+ minutes on a leg that should have been less than 3. I probably chose wrong, even if my route choice had been more favorable, because the other route was very open other than the handful of brown lines; buckle down and climb!

mp'd and didn't realize it until 2 days later!! It has been a while since I skipped a bag, and I hope just as long until it happens again.

Gentle run, left leg improved but still too tight to risk a full running stride. Damp night for how warm it should have felt. I won't be surprised to see the thick fog again tomorrow.

A better run than yesterday but still way, way off a personally acceptable run. More will need to be written after I can think about the big missteps on 3 and 6. I enjoyed the rest of the course and moved a fair bit quicker today.

Wow, I learned that I would need to be careful from the model map and I am certainly prone to periodic whoppers and but today was an unmitigated disaster. There were some controls that went well during the first third, but I completely torched #7. This was followed by messing up 8, 9, and 11. The leg to C11 had a second set of beaver dams that confused me (and did again on the long!!). My navigating got better again at the end but the subtlety of the terrain was mostly beyond me today. Differentiating the more intermittent marshes and streams I was not getting even after reflection. On the model map, there were dry stream channels that were solid blue lines and completely drenched dashed blue intermittent streams. During my relocation near 7, my inability to get into the mapper's system played as a big negative. A second relocation issue was the mapping of bare rock as open ground. Apparently this is standard in Sweden but was foreign to me. I found the forest to be slow and the footing to be uneven enough that real speed was not happening.

Compass-wise, 7 legs drifted left?

On the positive side, as lame as this was, it was not to long ago that my skills would have me still roaming the forest.

A final tune-up before heading to Ontario. Some of my tightness is getting stretched and rolled out so I am feeling better than before heading west in August. Goal for the weekend. Move well but don't outrun my brain.

2014 OLOU Goat at Cave Creek, 8.9k/365m/35C

A contrast to the previous race, much slower travel due to greener woods and more technical navigation, in part due to lower visibility.

The course was a bit odd due to park-imposed limits (all announced beforehand), using many controls on a largish 1:5000 map. To get the distance there was a map exchange at the halfway pt and there were 0 forks/2 skips per map. For me, map 1 was fine but I really struggled to find good routes to the controls. I made one egregious mistake at #6 confusing two roads and heading down a steep spur only to have to reverse myself (4 min). The ROWST on the longest leg to #7 was terrible running, some knee high mutant fern/juniper plants that obscured the footing. I compensated by staying in the slightly less annoying woods. #15 could have been taken more conservatively. It was a small cliff on the side of a reentrant and swinging safely low would have ensured hitting it the first time. Overall, I was in third.

The Map 2 was much better and I picked up the pace significantly and pushed up into second place. Only two distinct errors on this part, #5 intersecting a reentrant at a less well defined place and heading 10 steps down before reversing course (45 s) and #11 rolling too far across a green slope before being caught by #14 (1 min). The benefit was that I realized this was likely to happen so there was little loss of confidence and also the navigation back to #11 was very easy.

Hard to get out this past week and some irritated wack-a-mole issues with my left leg have been slightly discouraging. Rolling and stretching are increasing again to suppress them.
