Orienteering race 2:00:45 intensity: (1:00:00 @3) + (1:00:00 @4) + (45 @5) ** 14.82 km (8:09 / km) +90m 7:54 / km

Halloween-O at Eagle Creek East

Meet 25, course 37

A gray day became a rainy one about 5 min before the start. It didn't rain hard through most of the race but did worryingly pickup in the last 30 min. Lots of controls (45) made the course almost certainly unclearable by me but there were pairs of controls that, if both were collected, gave a bonus score. While running I had thought this was 2 pts/bonus, as it turned out it was 3 (it would be useful if I payed attention to the pre-race briefing).

This race was decent; started with a plan, rolled with the problems that cropped up, and revised my plan sensibly to use as much time as possible. I had real difficulties with 5 and 23; bailed on the first after 3-4 min and hunkered down until I found 23 (it was half of a bonus pair). I made a few sensible crosscountry runs to cut time that worked out and were time positive/neutral (7-10, 32-37).

Sequence: 19,22,18,17,13,8 (2 min lost),6,4,2(chose to take long trail route),drop 5,7,10,9,12,15,16,25,32,37,23,45,43,42,41,38,35,33,30. A clean run would have net 3-4 more but I was more than happy spending 2 hrs with no disasters. Fell once on a packed dirt road but the real pain was the bur rash (good thing that I don't need to wear shorts any time soon!!)

Good for a win, a bit ahead of Mike, and Aragorn.

platterpus set a nice set of challenges for the day. I wish I had really shown up. I didn't do well recovering from my errors today which tended to be compass/bearing leaving controls related. Major errors on 2, mispunched on 6 (punched 12 instead, the one stand I didn't check codes on because I was too annoyed; I actually felt lost on this leg!!), consequently my leg to 7 was bafflingly long (>2x what it should have been but I didn't understand why), and climbed the wrong spur on 8 (90 degree error again). By control 10, I had put myself on the ground >4 times, twice with old, unmapped fences that I didn't see, and turned my ankle in a hoof hole and face planted so I shut it down and walked some legs and ran a few others. I chose what seemed like a sensible route through 75 m of what was a wicked patch of very tall rough open that I thought should have had skeletons of those who did not quite make it to the mowed lawn at the campground cul-de-sac. Hammered through the finish in a many person 4th place tie to vent. cedarcreek let me know I mp'd (I didn't realize until then), I thanked him a bit snipily (for which I apologize) before moving on.

This race; my worst run since Happy Valley (thank god there was no knee-deep mud). I need to either stop trying to solve my recent issues to let them fix themselves or I need to fix them.

Ken, Bruce, and all of the OLOU/OCIN folks setup a very smoothly run set of races; a great weekend.

Meet 24, course 35

Mostly a good day. I liked the terrain more than I thought I might have and was happy for most of my run. Two big errors 5,4 min and several smaller miscues (≤1 min ea). Biggest was a missed reentrant due to thinking I saw an earth bank that was probably not mappable. 2nd was an egregious 90 degree error out an incorrect spur. Compass problems all weekend; worse on the 2nd day. I was really pleased that the weather held off until control pickup.

About as beautiful a night as I could ask for alas I wasn't feeling it before I started. Thought I might go for just 5 miles total but the first two miles felt so good I set my out-and-back turnaround at 4.5 miles (rather than 5). This turned out to be lucky because the last mile was not feeling nearly as good. Best long run in a while!

Man vs flora and self. Man loses on both counts. Still, beautiful foliage and a challenging course; thanks to Jess and Karl. I began to recognize the marsh variation by the end of the day without standing in soggy shrubs.

Notes to self: you don't understand the terrain until a few technical controls are in the bag and don't be obstinate, try to adjust in flight.

Good fun on a pretty open so definitely a runner's course. I had fresh legs. Only a few mistakes that totalled less than 1 min (including excess punching time). Alex James flew on this for his 2nd run.

2nd course, 3.3 km long sprint.

Worked hard on this. I need to put in a bit more sprint training. I felt like I was flagging badly on some of the later longer legs and suspect that some more interval work might help. 2nd on the day by 9 seconds to Aragorn.

This was the nicer course with more route choice using the bridges. Thanks to Wang-ki and David!
