A great way to spend the holiday wandering through a new piece of forest, ultimately exploring every way to access the inaccessible piece of Hoosier National Forest that is Story. In all of its remoteness, it is an undulating mass of reentrants, something of beauty. mikeminium and Aragorn and I were even able to find some of the permanent course that was left behind by earlier generation of orienteers.

Yellowwood, Red 7.4 km/585 m
Meet 18, course 24

While this was a pretty grueling affair, there was quite a lot to be liked about it.

Run-wise, I missed on 7 running too far out the spur. It seems like the depression on the spur has filled in or is only visible leaf-off because I couldn't pick it out during control pickup either. So, too far out the spur, down to the reentrant, knew there could be a problem, chose to shift W but E was correct (4.75 min). Other smaller problems with C10 pulled high by thinner vegetation (30 s) and C11. I took the high route; Aragorn thinks lower was better but as an armchair exercise, I think it is a wash. The problem with the high route wast the center and N side of the ridge have many blown down trees. There was a continuum of route stalks along the edge of the reentrant to zig around (eventually I crawled under a yard of trunk wedged between two 1.5-m rootstocks to escape). Clean to the end. Very happy with my navigation and compass work, the best of the season.

So, to be liked: lots of route choices, peaceful woods, some quite technical controls and just low enough visibility to be sure that you really had to keep on top of your map. I definitely want to do another spring meet here, one with more finishers.

To be adjusted in the future: it was slippery, steep (600+ m), and slower with the veg so, more appropriately brown, green and red should have been green, red, and blue, respectively.

Up to the new addition onto the Monon. A sharp blind turn where it connects to the Midland Trace is likely something that will be fixed after a couple of cyclists or runners land in the hospital.

Dirty Derby by OLOU, 4 h
Meet 17, course 23

This was a hard slog of a race. The Dirty Derby at Deam Lake let us see the developing O map of this park. It is on its way but still needs more field work to consistently get roads and vegetation in, but it was definitely fine once you got used to it.
The meet was nicely set by Aaron and Louis III and the navigation technically challenging (particularly 470). Yet, the park is chocked full of logging debris and greenbriar which makes running a real struggle; trails almost always win even if the detour is large. I had several humongous mistakes at about the 90 min mark (Knew at the start that I hadn't eaten for 4 hr of travel; I was right!) so I took it easy for the next 90 min then tried to clear up what I could on the return.

Finally catching up...
Ontario Champs meet by STARS, Long M21, 11.4 km
Meet 16, course 22

So, since this was likely to be a good A meet comparable course and I was eligible for nothing and I am a touch worried that running blue might start to get harder soon, I ran my first North American blue course not at a local meet. After the previous two runs, nothing could go wrong ;)

I started off a bit sluggishly but settled in during the first couple of legs. The escarpment was beautiful. There had been an ice storm during the spring which had dropped a lot of small limbs, trees, and debris that made the forest a bit treacherous. I found the long leg 6 pretty challenging to take the cross country route but many of the other long legs were really aided a lot by trail running. Caught up to Alex Teutch by leg 9 and we went back and forth until leg 24. This was fun and kept me pushing and trying to find any place where time could be found. His navigation was with few exceptions better but I was probably a touch quicker. Cutting around to control 21 using the opposite side of a spur, I finally didn't pick my feet up enough and hooked a downed tree, tried to grab a smaller tree as I went down watching the barkless truck approaching my face. Smacked pretty solidly, there was plenty of blood and my nose was a bit numb but I didn't seem to have stunned myself. So I started off again, slower, wiping blood from the map every few steps. By mouth breathing, I figured it would clot up and I could get on with it. Saw a startled Alex a couple of controls later, checked my nose was still straight, and told him I was fine, keep running. I made a significant error on 23 drifting off the E side rather than the S side of a plateau (5 min), another 90+ seconds at C24 (the control had a big black incorrect number modified with a pen to another incorrect number and the actual number in a small blue number below it on the label; it took me several returns to the control before I was positive it was right), and then 90 more seconds at C25 (parallel reentrant to C26 first). Everything from here was fine and I finished well exceeding my goal of not being last.

Ontario Champs meet by STARS, Middle Course 6, 3.6 km
Meet 16, course 21

Course was similar in character to the middle from 2012.

However, this was my typical rotten first run or middle run (I am not sure which is most true). Really, the course was not to difficult but I had hill vs valley issues approaching 4 and got very close to the control, but as it was over the crest of the ridge and I never crested, it was a touch hard to see. Otherwise, slow but not very accurately to C1, didn't read clue at C9 resulting in 20 s lost, C13 was harder than it looked with the vegetation leaving C12, and finally grossly underestimated how high the go (C14) was. Weather held and I got stretched out.

Ontario Champs meet by STARS, Sprint Course 5, 2.9 km
Meet 16, course 22

This was a really good run for me. I was up by 2:13 at C15 and over 3 min at the finish in M45-54. My time wouldn't have even been terrible in M21.

The only significant lost time was at C2 which was an exceptionally well set and confusing leg in the residences. Fun looping as well, kudos to the course setter. There was one mistake on my part. Apparently, C17 was planned in a location that was fenced in by construction so we needed to skip it. So this rattled around in my head until control 15. There I punched and remembered there was supposed to be a monitor to remind us to skip. Still I needed to skip so I did go on to C18. I After I finished I was unsettled and confused. I watched some other runners finish, stood in the DL line for a while when I asked Jon Torrance whether C17 was the skip. Seemed to be the case, then it donned on me. I had just left C15. Argh! So, I printed my mp and went to see a high school buddy living in Guelph.

Peach Mountain meet by SMOC, 12 k
Meet 15, course 20

Fun course, terrain was interesting
20 min whopper on the 5th leg of this score-O. Lost contact, and any sense of distance. Didn't stop fast enough but realized that I needed to get back to something I could recognize. Blindly fought through the mist, briars and dying pine seedlings ultimately back to a trail. Trail lead to road. Checked it out and was pretty sure where I was but the trails didn't all match up so I still thought I had overrun myself further. Off to a trail junction, seemed correct, back down the trail, noticed a Y-ed dotted ditch and felt comforted. Went on my merry way. Took most of 10 legs to get my head cleared out. Glad I went to this event, still cleared only 30 min behind Aragorn and dersu, and felt like most but not all of my other navigation was good.

Lesson learned: relocate off of at least 3 features if possible. If one (in this case a segment of trail that had overgrown to the point of invisibility) doesn't make sense but two others work, go for it. If you are right, map contact from there on out will seal the deal.

Added: 2 km added before I turned my watch on.

31-32-35-45-58-64-51(very slow av +3 min)-40-55-43-63(went around the med and light green to E on trail, apparently unnecessarily, + 90s)-60-53-49-71(route to S might have been quicker but the trail was fast and a known quantity)-44-48-47-54(poor route choice S then traversed E, 2.5 min)-56-52-59-61-57-42-41-65(57-41-65-42 would have been better wrt climb as was made clear to me after)-73-34-33-F
