(injured) shoes: Saucony Progrid Wide 2

Great North Run, 10 k (7:13/m)

First time that I have been able to run in this fundraiser for our school district.

My knee did not make much progress during the later part of the week; achy to varying degrees but less painful than earlier in the week. For this race, I just jogged lightly for about 200 m to loosen up and was pretty much figuring that I might be just aiming to finish. Aidan and I started in the 8-9 min queue anticipating a slow start. Once the race was on, we ran together and he set a good even rhythm. I was surprised that it was 7:25-7:30 because I had been feeling 8:30 or slower. We just held this for half the race and the pace increased in the 2nd half as I gained some confidence. Pleasingly, I had enough left to hurl for the finish.

Note
(injured)

Only half a night of sleep due to my aggravated left knee again. Low lab chairs, running on pavement....? I need to work this out.

Trail running 25:17 [2] 3.02 mi (8:22 / mi) +14m 8:15 / mi
shoes: Saucony Progrid Wide 2

On Saturday, I watched several groups of ducks flying north. They brought nice weather with them. Tonight was a pleasant run with A that helped clear up my fuzzy head caused by exam setting.

Miami Whitewater Blue, 11 k

I love this park and was thankful that Mike provided a nice way to spend an afternoon there. I should have spent 20 or 30 min less, but I wasn't feeling really fast and made two errors that ballooned to whoppers.

Error one was control 3. This area drives me nuts. I started in from the small parking area, to the clearing and then was driven by dense evil shrubs further and further west. I hit the horse/hiking trail and knew that this was bad. Sadly, I relocated and got within about 20 m of the bag and didn't see it, and chewed through 12 more minutes backing out and reapproaching a third time.

Error two was control 10. I took the long and (maybe) careful way along the trails and long runnable spur, slowed down at the tight saddle before the complex reentrants, and bent the landscape to my map. After this folly, I then plodded 150 m back feeling my way the control. I am a bit surprised by how far I blew past and I am second guessing the safety of the ridge. A more direct line would have required a big climb over the ridge but would have given a more certain attackpoint.

If I could have one back, I would take C3. Early sizeable errors change the pace of my runs and my choices. Becoming more conservative and taking long, safe detours is not likely a good way to get back in the game, it only gave me more time to think about the mistakes.

I saw a deer and 6 turkeys (I even stopped to watch them!). And, I thank the beavers, they gave a briar-free path around the lake in the often-flooded area.
