Orienteering race 1:30:12 [3] **** 8.6 km (10:29 / km) +200m 9:24 / km
spiked:9/15c shoes: X-Talon 212

A bifurcated run. The first half, I ran pretty dismally. I took the first of 3 headers, all on trails, enroute to control 1 (fortunately out of site of the start). I really loved the map and Ali's course but did not have any sense of what the map would be like. There were so many tag lines and negative features and basically no streams, that I was ill-prepared to simplify the map in ways that I could properly run. After I had made it most of the way to control 7 the floundering began to rapidly subside. Nevertheless, I had lost pretty much 20 minutes in a handful of places, a few of them errors (wrong reentrant at 4 and neutralized by a distracting extra trail and poor focus for 5), more than a few minutes letting the vegetation control me rather than the reverse (especially approaching 3 and leaving 6), and a significant amount of time dithering on navigating or map reading (basically everywhere C1-7). Speed was a bit of an issue, and was very obvious as I was hazed by Tom after control 11. I chased a bit but half-heartedly as I wasn't in a mindset to hold him.

The best legs were 11 and 15 that were interesting trying to pick the best path across a pretty convoluted landscape, mostly E of the line on the first and SW of the line on the second. If I had not dithered on the route and bashed through more vines than necessary, I think I could have nicked Mark on 15; maybe next time.

I definitely enjoyed the day and will return and should check out some other SMOC venues.

shoes: Saucony Progrid Wide 2

Today it was 75 degrees and the trail was hard as a rock. I was probably one day from my foot feeling fully good. All together, this was a harder run than last week and less pleasant but I am happy that I made it home and the pace was only off a bit.

This felt like it was at my temperature limit for going the whole way without water.

Cycling 45:59 [3] 11.91 mi (15.5 mph) +27m

Put some air in my tyres and went for a spin. Lots of people using the trail oddly and poorly so it was hard to keep moving at a solid pace.
