Red course at Winnewana 6.7k

A really fine day in the woods, not leaving me to question at all the advertised epic courses tag line for the event. A well set course for a first-time course setter (Mellisa, hope I remembered this correctly) shadowed by Jens.

The forest is pretty green which made this great. That said, my first couple of controls were bumpy because I wasn't doing a great job of distance estimation and in green forest, the low hills were subtle. There was lost time on both with slow motion in or just before the circle. Also was a bit off line on 8, which pushed me out onto a small pennisula, and later on the same leg just not finding a good way through the green. Staying up was a win between 5-6.

Happy with my navigation, followed some fairly broad features but paid attention and used my compass reasonably well. Won a leg and 2nd on a few which was unexpected with Mark Voit and Igor on the course. Usually, if things are a bit off in my nav on SMOC maps, I will wig out and run in circles for hundreds of meters. Reined that in yesterday, so I was happy. Happy enough that mispunching on 3 didn't rain on my parade. I was a bit to happy to have bushwacked through the green to intersect a trail to notice that there was a circle on my map right next that I wasn't paying attention to. The leg also caught me on a 3 controls in a line skip that I seem to be really susceptible to.

Thanks to SMOC for putting on excellent quality forest meets in challenging terrain. I wish I could move your terrain a couple of hours south.

Note
(rest day)

Funky knee in the evening. Kinda of a PFP feeling situation, maybe started from a seemingly innocuous twist in lab. Letting it rest until tomorrow and then I will see what it has.

Easy run. Hotter than it has been and my heart rate showed it. Could also be the shingles vaccine.
